Ottawa donates $1 million to help expand market opportunities for agri-business

GUELPH, Ont. (February 22, 2008) - The Government of Canada announced today it would invest $1 million to establish a Guelph-based Value Chain Management Centre (VCMC), to help increase market opportunities for farmers and agri-food businesses across Ontario.

“The Government of Canada is working hard for farmers to ensure they remain competitive,” said Bev Shipley, Member of Parliament for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex. Shipley made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Gerry Ritz, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food and Minister for the Canadian Wheat Board.

The VCMC will be located at the George Morris Centre in Guelph, an independent agri-food think-tank.

“This is an important investment in Guelph that will help farmers and agri-food businesses expand and grow,” said Gloria Kovach, the Federal Conservative candidate for Guelph. “It will also build on the important work already being done at the George Morris Centre on value chains.”

The Centre will operate in conjunction with the College of Management Economics and other industry partners.
