Guelph, Ont. (May 29, 2008) – The House of Commons voted on Wednesday to pass a bill that would mandate renewable fuel content in gasoline by 2010 and diesel by 2012.
“The Conservative Government is delivering a balanced biofuel policy that's good for our environment, good for our economy, and good for our farm families by passing Bill C-33 through the House of Commons,” says Gloria Kovach, Federal Conservative Candidate for Guelph.
Bill C-33 allows Canada to meet its biofuel goals of five per cent renewable content in gasoline and two per cent renewable content in biodiesel. The reduction to greenhouse gas emissions will be equivalent to taking one million cars off the road.
Seventy-two Liberals voted for this legislation while 40 Bloc and 22 NDP voted against the motion, which still needs to be debated in the Senate before passing into law.
The Conservative Government is also investing $500 million in next generation biofuel technologies that can turn waste products, such as straw and wood chips, into cleaner-burning, renewable fuels.
