A borehole is the generalized term for any narrow shaftbored in the ground, either vertically or horizontally. A borehole may be constructed for many different purposes, including the extraction of water or other liquid (such as petroleum) or gases (such as natural gas), as part of a geotechnical investigation, environmental site assessment, mineral exploration, temperature measurement or as a pilot hole for installing piers or underground utilities.
Engineers and environmental consultants use the term to collectively describe all of the various types of holes drilled as part of a geotechnical investigation or environmental site assessment (a so-called Phase II ESA). This includes holes advanced to collect soil samples, water samples or rock cores, to advance in situ sampling equipment, or to install monitoring wells or piezometers. Samples collected from boreholes are often tested in a laboratory to determine their physical properties, or to assess levels of various chemical constituents or contaminants.

The Kola Superdeep Borehole (Russian: Кольская сверхглубокая скважина, Kolskaya sverkhglubokaya skvazhina) is the result of a scientific drilling project of the Soviet Union in the Pechengsky District, on the Kola Peninsula. The project attempted to drill as deep as possible into the Earth's crust. Drilling began on 24 May 1970 using the Uralmash-4E, and later the Uralmash-15000 series drilling rig. A number of boreholes were drilled by branching from a central hole. The deepest, SG-3, reached 12,262 metres (40,230 ft) in 1989 and still is the deepest artificial point on Earth.

Borehole images are widely used in the oil and gas industry in several applications, including structural analysis and geosteering, sedimentary and reservoir geometry analysis, and textural analysis. It is also used as a tool to study in-situ stress around the borehole for geomechanics analysis.
Borehole Imaging can dramatically expand the information obtained from conventional logs. It also has several advantages over cores, particularly its relatively low cost, its high vertical resolution (up to 5 mm), and the fact that image logs can be easily run in long sections of the borehole, in and out of the reservoir. Residents of Kajiado west sub county can now access water easily after a borehole was drilled in the area by the county government. Women and children have been walking long distances to get water for domestic use. There have also been cases of some residents, especially children, suffering from water borne diseases after taking contaminated water from untreated water sources.
The borehole, fitted with a pump will serve more than 1500 households. The use of the facility was officially commissioned by the deputy governor.

It also has several advantages over cores, particularly its relatively low cost, its high vertical resolution (up to 5 mm), and the fact that image logs can be easily run in long sections of the borehole, in and out of the reservoir. There is one fundamental challenge in this technique, however: processing time! A drilling rig in standby waiting for the formation dip to be obtained from an image log, in order to pick a kick-off point, is a rig that is wasting several thousand dollars per hour. If a more detailed structural or stratigraphic analysis is required, a log analyst may spend somewhere between eight hours to a couple of days producing a result. If textural information from the images needs to be used for a facies analysis, then a commitment of several days could be required!
This Virtual Lecture by Diego Vaszuez, shows how the Paradigm® Geolog® Borehole Image Analysis tool can dramatically reduce image log processing times while still producing highest quality output. From automatic dip picking procedures that match manual results to meaningful and unbiased textural and petrophysical information from the images – if you work with image logs, Geolog Borehole Image Analysis is a must-have tool.
