Before unclean water can be successfully treated with bio-sand waters, there has to be a reasonably close source of water! Jenna Wes, a Peace Corps volunteer in Uganda, and Naimat Gilal, a Pakistani-American were trained to build bio-sand water filters by Friendly Water for the World in Olympia, WA. In Uganda, Jenna exclaimed "before you can get clean water, you have to have water!" Naimat Gilal went to Uganda with his childhood friend from Pakistan to teach and install two wells using borehole technology that costs $500 and provided water for 800 people. Modifications to the borehole drill bits were made and tested in Olympia WA for Friendly Water for the World's "Big Dig."

The Kola Superdeep Borehole (Russian: Кольская сверхглубокая скважина, Kolskaya sverkhglubokaya skvazhina) is the result of a scientific drilling project of the Soviet Union in the Pechengsky District, on the Kola Peninsula. The project attempted to drill as deep as possible into the Earth's crust. Drilling began on 24 May 1970 using the Uralmash-4E, and later the Uralmash-15000 series drilling rig. A number of boreholes were drilled by branching from a central hole. The deepest, SG-3, reached 12,262 metres (40,230 ft) in 1989 and still is the deepest artificial point on Earth.

Making the Most of Borehole Images

Borehole images are widely used in the oil and gas industry in several applications, including structural analysis and geosteering, sedimentary and reservoir geometry analysis, and textural analysis. It is also used as a tool to study in-situ stress around the borehole for geomechanics analysis. Borehole Imaging can dramatically expand the information obtained from conventional logs. It also has several advantages over cores, particularly its relatively low cost, its high vertical resolution (up to 5 mm), and the fact that image logs can be easily run in long sections of the borehole, in and out of the reservoir. There is one fundamental challenge in this technique, however: processing time! A drilling rig in standby waiting for the formation dip to be obtained from an image log, in order to pick a kick-off point, is a rig that is wasting several thousand dollars per hour. If a more detailed structural or stratigraphic analysis is required, a log analyst may spend somewhere between eight hours to a couple of days producing a result. If textural information from the images needs to be used for a facies analysis, then a commitment of several days could be required!
