A 707 aircraft jetliner on its way from Athens to Rome and then to New York City is hijacked by Lebanese terrorists. The terrorists demand that the pilot take them to Beirut. What the terrorists don't realize is that an elite team of commandoes led by Major McCoy (Norris) and by Colonel Alexander (Marvin) as been called into service to eliminate all terrorists on the jetliner and who's involved in the hijacking and try to retake the plane before the terrorists kill all the hostages.

1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D) is one of the United States' secretive tier one counter-terrorism and Special Mission Units. While popularly known as Delta Force, it is normally referred to as The Unit by its members. It was formerly listed as the Combat Applications Group by the Department of Defense but has since been officially re-designated the Army Compartmented Elements (ACE). While 1st SFOD-D is administratively supported by USASOC, it falls under the operational control of the Joint Special Operations Command. Delta Force and its Navy counterpart, the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (also known as DEVGRU or SEAL Team Six), are the United States military's primary counter-terrorism units.
Delta Force's primary tasks are counter-terrorism, direct action, and national intervention operations, although it is an extremely versatile group capable of conducting many types of covert missions, including, but not limited to, hostage rescues and raids.
The Central Intelligence Agency's highly secretive Special Activities Division (SAD) and more specifically its elite Special Operations Group (SOG) often recruits operators from Delta Force.

IRAQ -- Army Delta Force commandos made a last-minute decision to jump into a firefight between Kurdish special forces and Islamic State fighters, ISIS, during a raid in northern Iraq that freed dozens of hostages but left one American soldier dead. The 30 American special operations troops, thought to be U.S. Army’s Delta Force, were only supposed to be operating in support of Kurdish forces near the town of Hawijah, south of Kirkuk, on Thursday morning, but “in the heat of combat they saw their friends taking some casualties” so they “made a decision to go in and assist,” a U.S. military official told Foreign Policy. In the ensuing firefight, one American service member was killed, the first U.S. combat death in Iraq since 2011.
The raid kicked off after midnight on Thursday after U.S. officials saw intelligence indicating that mass graves had been dug at the site and that the prisoners were going to be executed at dawn.
American and Kurdish commandos landed at the walled compound aboard helicopters flown by the U.S. Army’s elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, known as “Night Stalkers,” after which the Americans took up concealed positions behind a wall to observe the Kurdish assault.
Once the firefight started and Kurds began to go down, the plan changed, leading to an intense fight that marked the first direct ground combat between U.S. forces and the Islamic State in Iraq. Kurdish officials have said about 20 Islamic State fighters were killed in the assault.
The group of 70 prisoners freed from captivity included at least six former Islamic State fighters being held as traitors, the official confirmed. The remainder included about 20 Iraqi soldiers and a large group of local Iraqi Arabs from the town of Hawijah.
No U.S. official has been able to articulate exactly why the raid was conducted, since no “high-value” targets were thought to be at the site. Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said on Thursday that the U.S. military “did not have a crystal clear idea of who exactly would be there” once the troops arrived.
The raid has raised questions over the role that U.S. forces should play in Iraq, since President Barack Obama has insisted that they are tasked only with performing non-combat advise and assist missions. Cook added that despite the American combat death, “U.S. forces are not in an active combat mission in Iraq.”
The raid came at the request of the Kurdistan Regional Government and was within the bounds of U.S. operations in Iraq “in their advise and assist capacity,” Gen. Lloyd Austin, the head of U.S. Central Command, said in a statement.
After the raid, American F-15 fighter planes came in and destroyed the compound.
The operation appears to be the most significant American ground operation in the region since U.S. Delta Force troops raided the home of Abu Sayyaf, a top Islamic State financier, in Syria in May. He was killed in the raid which nabbed a treasure trove of documents and intelligence. The soldiers also captured his wife, known as Umm Sayyaf, who was turned over to Kurdish authorities for interrogation .
The American casualty, who's name has not been released, marks the first time a U.S. service member has been killed in Iraq since the American withdrawal in 2011. About 3,500 American forces returned in 2014 to advise Iraqi forces in their fight with the Islamic State.

Those actions, Defense Secretary Ash Carter told reporters on Friday, weren't part of the original rescue mission plan, but were critical to its success. "I am immensely proud of this young man," Carter said adding that his thoughts and prayers go out to Wheeler's family.
Earlier Friday, Defense officials confirmed Joshua Wheeler, 39, as the American Delta Force commando killed in a rescue mission in Iraq on Thursday.
Acting on a tip that dozens of ISIS-held hostages were about to be slaughtered, U.S. and Kurdish commandos stormed a prison in northeastern Iraq before dawn Thursday, rescuing the captives in a firefight that ended with Wheeler being shot to death, officials said.
Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Friday that Wheeler "did what proud Americans do" when he ran toward the sound of gunfire.
The operation marked the first known instance of American service members battling ISIS fighters on the ground in Iraq under President Obama's new mission to "train and advise" local forces against the terror group.
Carter said that the military expects "more raids of this kind" and that the rescue mission "represents a continuation of our advise and assist mission."
This may mean some American soldiers "will be in harm's way, no question about it," Carter said.
Wheeler, who earned multiple Bronze Star Medals among others, is the first to die in American combat operations against ISIS. He is survived by his wife and four sons as well as his grandparents.
Wheeler, who was roughly a month shy of his 40th birthday, was born in Roland, Oklahoma. He graduated in 1994 from Muldrow High School in Muldrow, Oklahoma and entered the Army a year later as an infantryman training initially at Fort Benning, Ga., according to a statement from the military.
He was first assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment in Fort Lewis, Washington.
In 1997, he transitioned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington. Over the next seven years, he worked his way up the ranks from infantryman, rifle team leader, squad leader, weapons squad leader, and anti-tank section leader.
In 2004, Wheeler was assigned to U.S. Army Special Operations Command.
During his military careers Wheeler was deployed at least 17 times, most of those in support of combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army said.
Wheeler's awards and decorations for his service were numerous and include four Bronze Star Medals with Valor Device, seven Bronze Star Medals, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal with Valor Device, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, seven Army Commendation Medals, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, eight Army Achievement Medals and Good Conduct Medal.

An award bestowing either of these citations represents the highest honors awarded within the CIA organization in recognition of distinguished valor and excellence in the line of duty. SAD/SOG operatives also account for the majority of the names displayed on the Memorial Wall at CIA headquarters indicating that the agent died while on active duty.

SEALs can negotiate shallow water areas such as the Persian Gulf coastline, where large ships and submarines are limited due to depth.

1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D), popularly known as Delta Force, is a U.S. Army component of Joint Special Operations Command. It was formerly listed as the Combat Applications Group (CAG) by the Department of Defense but some claim it has been re-designated the Army Compartmented Elements (ACE). While 1st SFOD-D is administratively supported by USASOC, it falls under the operational control of the Joint Special Operations Command. Delta Force and its Navy counterpart, the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, are the United States military's primary counter-terrorism units. It is often referred to in the U.S. media as a Special Mission Unit.
Delta Force's primary tasks are counter-terrorism, direct action, and national intervention operations, although it is an extremely versatile group capable of conducting many types of clandestine missions, including, but not limited to, hostage rescues and raids.
The Central Intelligence Agency's highly secretive Special Activities Division (SAD) and more specifically its elite Special Operations Group (SOG) often works with – and recruits – operators from Delta Force.

The Special Activities Division (SAD) is a division in the United States Central Intelligence Agency's (CIA) National Clandestine Service (NCS) responsible for covert operations known as "special activities". Within SAD there are two separate groups, SAD/SOG for tactical paramilitary operations and SAD/PAG for covert political action.[1]
Special Operations Group (SOG) is the department within SAD responsible for operations that include the collection of intelligence in hostile countries and regions, and all high threat military or intelligence operations with which the U.S. government does not wish to be overtly associated.[2] As such, members of the unit (called Paramilitary Operations Officers and Specialized Skills Officers) normally do not carry any objects or clothing (e.g., military uniforms) that would associate them with the United States government.[3] If they are compromised during a mission, the government of the United States may deny all knowledge.[4]
SOG is generally considered the most secretive special operations force in the United States. The group selects operatives from other tier one special mission units such as Delta Force, DEVGRU and ISA, as well as other United States special operations forces, such as USNSWC, MARSOC, USASF and 24th STS.
SOG Paramilitary Operations Officers account for a majority of Distinguished Intelligence Cross and Intelligence Star recipients during any given conflict or incident which elicits CIA involvement. An award bestowing either of these citations represents the highest honors awarded within the CIA organization in recognition of distinguished valor and excellence in the line of duty. SAD/SOG operatives also account for the majority of the names displayed on the Memorial Wall at CIA headquarters indicating that the agent died while on active duty.
