Amanda Burden: How public spaces make cities work
More than 8 million people are crowded together to live in New York City. What makes it possible? In part, it's the city's great public spaces -- from tiny pocket parks to long waterfront promenades -- where people can stroll and play. Amanda Burden helped plan some of the city's newest public spaces, drawing on her experience as, surprisingly, an animal behaviorist. She shares the unexpected challenges of planning parks people love -- and why it's important.

A Career in Urban Planning
Encroachments, flouting of rules that help put up illegal structures and the general disregard for urban planning. A disregard that has led to problems ranging from traffic jams and flooding to gradual unemployment and income disparities. Given the scale of urbanisation, India seems to have a lower number of urban planners than are required. According to the urban development ministry there are just 5000 urban planners in the country. Clearly - there is opportunity to disrupt. On this episode of Heads Up we take a look at youngsters doing just that, and the road to becoming an urban planner.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.
Jason explains the concept of “shareable cities”, where citizens work together to crowd source goods, services, funding, transportation, money, knowledge, and more. He argues how access to transparent and open data will enable greater innovation since members of the community can leverage shared data sets on transportation, healthcare, and infrastructure, to build products and services that serve the public good.
Jason Hsu is an educator, design thinker, storyteller and most of all a learner of Nature. Starting out as a journalist for Taiwan News, Jason developed a curious mind for humanity. His desire to explore brought him to travel across Central and South America in search of a Che Guevara-like revolution. He spent time in Xi’an, China helping investigate and research water resource consumption under UNESCO.
In 2008, he co-founded The Big Question Conference as a way to facilitate, build conversation and network among the youth in Asia. What began as a conference turned into a social innovation hub that draws a variety of creative talents and entrepreneurial minds to collaborate. He also co-founded TEDxTaipei in 2009 and has been serving as TEDx Ambassador since 2010.
Jason’s most recent endeavour was the founding of Shareable Cities, a venture established with the aim to explore sharing economy business models. Jason is passionate about open data, collaborative working as well as mutualism theories espoused by the beehive. He is a runner and an avid lover of mountain climbing.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I also have to begin to modify the design of the channel. Tell me of what you think of it on the comments.

Over the past 325 years Penn's plan of the city has been modified by many individuals to reflect an evolving vision of a city both beautiful and practical. The Planning of Center City Philadelphia: From William Penn to the Present traces these three centuries of planning history, from Penn's original concept to the design of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway—one of the significant monuments of the City Beautiful movement in the United States—to the mid-20th century urban renewal efforts that made Philadelphia a national leader in city planning and urban revitalization. Richly illustrated with historic maps and photographs, the book also includes brief biographical sketches of nine Philadelphians who have contributed significantly to the practice of city planning, including Paul Philippe Cret, Edmund N. Bacon, David A. Wallace, and Denise Scott Brown. Also included are five walking tours of Center City, where the results of this planning history can be seen and experienced most easily: Old City, Society Hill, City Hall East, City Hall West (Penn Center), and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The tours contain easily readable maps as well as photographs and descriptions of the most significant architectural landmarks in each area.John Andrew Gallery has been a member of Philadelphia's community development and historic preservation community for close to fifty years. From 2002 to 2013, he was Executive Director of the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia, where he advocated for the city's historic built environment. He is the author of Philadelphia Architecture, A Guide to the City and editor of Sacred Sites of Center City, also available from Paul Dry Books.

As the tide of globalization grows in sway and influence, are the built environments of the world's cities at risk of homogenization? Here, leading scholars evaluate the challenges of architecture and urban planning in Muslim societies, investigating the signs of the homogenizing processes within urban spaces. The book argues that homogenization risks limiting - even denying - transformations in Muslim societies beyond narrow dichotomies of modernism versus tradition. The possibility that representations of modernity in cities around the world will create an extensive uniformity in urban planning and the ways in which people live in different societies is arousing considerable criticism and debate. The book identifies the factors which have generated homogenization, and explores the interrelationship between social issues, the public sphere and the urban environment, and also considers where there have been movements towards differentiation, resistance and heterogenization. This is valuable reading for students and scholars with an interest in architecture, urban planning, the built environment, and questions of modernity in the Muslim world and beyond.

Keynote presentation by Ananya Roy - Professor of Urban Planning and Social Welfare, Meyer and Renee Luskin Chair in Inequality and Democracy, and inaugural Director of The Institute on Inequality and Democracy at UCLA Luskin as part of the conference: Contesting the Streets II: Vending and Public Space in Global Cities.
This conference is sponsored by SLAB, the Spatial Analysis Lab at USC Price; The César E. Chávez Department for Chicana/o Studies at UCLA, and the USC Bedrosian Center on Governance.
In large cities around the world, the most contested public space is the streets and accompanying sidewalks. As a result of historic migration and immigration to urban centers, the spatial projects vying for this space have multiplied. In particular, the growth of street vending causes us to reconsider some of the fundamental concepts that we have used to understand the city. Vending can be seen as a private taking of public space. It can contribute to civic vitality as well as be an impediment to traffic flow. Vendors are often micro-entrepreneurs who cannot access the private real estate market as spaces for livelihood. The issues about the legitimate use of public space, the right to the city, and local ordinance enforcement/dereliction are often complicated by class conflict as well as the street vendors’ diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, and their migrant/immigrant status. As a result, recent street vendors’ challenges and protests have been important catalysts with far-reaching political implications about the future of our urban societies.
This symposium brings together scholars and practitioners in dynamic dialogue to present empirical cases (both contemporary and historical) and larger global trends. While vending and public space has been the subject of acrimonious debate in many cities between vendors, local government, formal business and property owners, community organizations, pedestrians and alternative mobility groups, it has also been the impetus for some innovative mixed-use and inclusive arrangements for sharing urban space. Since in our largest, densest cities, local governments, urban planners, and citizens will have to find new ways to plan, design, and govern this precious urban public space, this symposium particularly seeks to shed light on possible futures and the key narratives that will need to be re-written. Towards this end, this symposium extends the first Contesting the Street conference that was held at UCLA in 2010, by expanding the geographic focus of the inquiry beyond (while still including) the Americas to gain comparative insights.

In the middle of Central Florida swamplands and ranch property, Walt Disney aspired to build the greatest American city ever conceived--EPCOT. While Disney would die before realizing this epic achievement, he still left behind the blueprint for one of the boldest and most unique projects ever proposed on American soil.Walt and the Promise of Progress City is an amazing new book that explores how Walt Disney--the master of fiction--was determined to bring new life to the non-fiction world of city design and development and, in doing so, fundamentally improve the Great American way of life. This 374-page paperback by Sam Gennawey explores Walt Disney's vision for a city of tomorrow, EPCOT, and how this great city would be a way for American corporations to demonstrate how technology, creative thinking, and hard work could change the world. Quite simply, Disney saw this project as a way to influence the public's expectations about city life, in the same way his earlier work had redefined what it meant to watch an animated film or visit an amusement park.Gennawey, a professional planner and highly-respected theme park and attractions industry expert, also breaks new ground in detailing the process through which meaningful and functional spaces have been created by Walt Disney and his artists as well as how guests understand and experience those spaces.Gennawey has spent years researching the history of EPCOT and Walt Disney's love for city planning while interviewing a wide variety of key players familiar with Walt and his vision for EPCOT. Disney Legend Marty Sklar says;"[Sam has] captured much of the attitude and events of the times, and hit on much of Walt's drive and inspiration. [His] research into materials and people who were important in one way or ano the r is exemplary. The notes from Buzz Price, John Hench and Marvin Davis, for example... the apparent influence of Victor Gruen's theories...a relationship that developed with James Rouse - all insightful. It is clear, well researched and useful and thoughtful to anyone studying urban planning."

Bertrand Goldberg (1913-1997) was a visionary Chicago architect whose designs for housing, urban planning, and industrial design made a distinctive mark in the modern era. This handsome publication, the first to focus in-depth on the entirety of Goldberg's life and work, traces his development from his early Bauhaus training to his notable architectural achievements. Featuring previously unpublished material, it also includes Goldberg's plans for unrealized projects as well as his collaborations with other prominent modern architects, such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Buckminster Fuller. Goldberg's interest in the social dimension of architecture was reflected in many of his cutting-edge designs. In 1959, he conceived the plan for his most iconic structure, the sixty-story Marina City residential towers, in the heart of downtown Chicago. He created a number of hospitals that offered a new paradigm for how patients and staff interacted within the space. Goldberg's progressive designs also extended to schools, prefabricated structures, and furniture.

Public urban spaces vary widely in type, form and size, encompassing plazas, squares and streetscapes. They serve pedestrians and flaneurs, accommodate street life in all its vibrant variations and represent the cities and towns themselves. On the one hand they are transit spaces or crossroads, while on the other hand they provide opportunities to linger or stage events. This volume features recent projects from all continents, showing the different approaches and solutions to this sophisticated design task at the intersection of architecture, landscape design and urban planning. Hardly any other area of spatial design offers so much freedom and such functional and formal diversity as does the design of urban spaces.

The definitive guide to urban planning and design--completely updated and now in full color In the Third Edition of The American City: What Works, What Doesn't, award-winning city planner and renowned urban scholar Alexander Garvin examines more than 350 programs and projects that have been implemented nationwide in 150 cities and suburbs, evaluates their successes and failures, and offers relevant lessons learned from them. Nearly all of the book's 650 illustrations are now in full color and consist almost entirely of photographs, maps, and diagrams produced especially for the Third Edition. Garvin discusses major urban initiatives that have emerged over the past two decades, such as Chicago's Millennium Park, Houston's Uptown Business District, and Metropolitan Denver's FasTracks multicounty rapid transit network. He reexamines the wide range of places and strategies covered in the previous edition, offering new analyses and insights. A new chapter on retrofitting the city for a modern commercial economy is included. This practical guide presents six key ingredients of project success--market, location, design, financing, time, and entrepreneurship--and explains how to combine these elements in a mutually reinforcing manner. Garvin demonstrates how the synthesis of individual and private-sector efforts, community-level action, and broad-based government policy can--and has--achieved urban and suburban regeneration. COVERAGE INCLUDES: A realistic approach to city and suburban planning Ingredients of success--market, location, design, financing, time, and entrepreneurship Parks, playgrounds, and open space Retail shopping Palaces for the people--libraries, stadiums, museums, and other public facilities Retrofitting the city for a modern commercial economy The life and death of the City of Tomorrow--implications of national urban redevelopment programs Downtown management Increasing the housing supply Reducing housing costs Housing rehabilitation Clearing the slums Revitalizing neighborhoods Residential suburbs New-towns-in-town New-towns-in-the-country Land use regulation Historic preservation Comprehensive planning

"...Extraordinary: Gibbs has popped the hood and taken apart the engine of commercial design and development, showing us each individual part and explaining fit, form and function."
—Yaromir Steiner, Founder, Chief Executive Officer, Steiner + Associates "...the most comprehensive and expansive book ever written on the subject of Retail Real Estate Development. Gibbs is by far the most prominent advocate for reforming retail planning and development in order to return American cities to economic and physical prominence."
–Stefanos Polyzoides, Moule & Polyzoides Architects & Urbanists
The retail environment has evolved rapidly in the past few decades, with the retailing industry and its placement and design of "brick-and-mortar" locations changing with evolving demographics, shopping behavior, transportation options and a desire in recent years for more unique shopping environments. Written by a leading expert, this is a guide to planning for retail development for urban planners, urban designers and architects. It includes an overview of history of retail design, a look at retail and merchandising trends, and principles for current retail developments. Principles of Urban Retail Planning and Development will: Provide insight and techniques necessary for historic downtowns and new urban communities to compete with modern suburban shopping centers. Promote sustainable community building and development by making it more profitable for the shopping center industry to invest in historic cities or to develop walkable urban communities. Includes case studies of recent good examples of retail development

The Panama-Pacific International Exposition celebrated the emergence of San Francisco from the Devastation of the 1906 Earthquake and Fire, launching it as the most modern city in the world, an economic gateway between the emerging United States, the Pacific and Europe, and a cultural center. An artistic and programmatic success, the Exposition's financial success was dependent on its transportation system. The Palace of Fine Arts and the Civic Auditorium are seen as lasting monuments to the PPIE. Learn how PPIE infrastructure improvements have served San Franciscans every day for the past 100 years and how these arteries are being transformed today to serve us during the next century--Central Subway, Van Ness Avenue Bus Rapid Transit, and E-Embarcadero Streetcars to Fort Mason.
Panelists include:
Grant Ute - Author and Historian. Author of, San Francisco Municipal Railway, Alameda by Rails, and San Francisco's Market Street Railway
Michael Schwartz - Senior Transportation Planner, San Francisco County Transportation Authority
Peter Albert, Manager, SFMTA Urban Planning Initiatives, SF Municipal Transportation Agency

Cities Skylines Urban Planning ► It's a walkthrough version of my previous video on the Power Plant without timelapse or commentary, just a nice journey. I present rather long projects at the moment, but I really want to share with you my city, that you can visit it, live inside. Then I would continue to release walkthrough versions of my big videos to allow you to visit the city without timelapse or comments which some people can find boring.
There will be also unpublished versions which will be not from the series Urban Planning.
This weekend I'm going to do a first try of streaming on Twitch. It will be mainly in French, but I would be happy to answer all your questions in English. You can already visit (and follow?) the channel here: http://www.twitch.tv/atyss

Daniels B.E.S.T. Lecture: Jennifer Keesmaat "Integrating Walkability in Urban Design"
On November 7, 2013, Chief Planner for the City of Toronto Jennifer Keesmaat presented the talk "Walking Your Talk – Integrating Walkability in Urban Design" as part of the Building, Ecology, Science and Technology (B.E.S.T.) Lecture Series at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.
Is there an urban amenity that is more democratic than walkability? Regardless of your demographic, walking around your city is a positive way to improve your health, the economy and the environment. But many of Toronto's new developments have failed to give priority to walkability, in stark contrast to the numerous established distric

Guest Gracen Johnson - Urban Researcher and Community Planning
Ms. Johnson shares research and perspectives on what makes cities and communities walkable and economically viable. The common belief having a big box store move into your town as a measure of success may not actually be the case, explains Ms. Johnson. She also shares how urban planning needs to remember the "good" of the old approach used some 100 years ago, and provides great image-maps of a community using Fredericton as an example.
In many respects, Gracen not only talks the talk on what makes communities great places to live, she also walks the walk. Her is the link to her Youtube channel to see what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/chan

Pitch: Alfredo Brillembourg: As the world becomes increasingly urban, the demand for decent housing is greater than the supply. Those who can afford living in city centers take advantage of better access to economic opportunities and public amenities. Low-income households are increasingly forced to exit the city to find cheaper housing on the city’s fringes or in suburban agglomerations. Discussion (everybody): What can architects learn from community managers and vice versa about urban planning?

On November 7, 2013, Chief Planner for the City of Toronto Jennifer Keesmaat presented the talk "Walking Your Talk – Integrating Walkability in Urban Design" as part of the Building, Ecology, Science and Technology (B.E.S.T.) Lecture Series at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design.
Is there an urban amenity that is more democratic than walkability? Regardless of your demographic, walking around your city is a positive way to improve your health, the economy and the environment. But many of Toronto's new developments have failed to give priority to walkability, in stark contrast to the numerous established districts and neighbourhoods that are among the most walkable in the world. As population growth advances across the GTHA, it is critical for sustainable urban development to walk its talk through effective guidelines and a deeper understanding of best practices. Undoing unwalkability will also be an important future challenge. This public lecture examined how walkability can be advanced while positively contributing to the challenges of intensification, public transit and priority neighbourhoods.
As the recently engaged Chief Planner for the City of Toronto, Jennifer is committed to creating places where people flourish. Over the past decade Jennifer has been repeatedly recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners, OPPI, the Design Exchange, + EDRA for her innovative work in Canadian municipalities. Her planning practice is characterized by an emphasis on collaborations across sectors, and broad engagement with municipal staff, councils, developers, business leaders, NGOs and residents associations. Her priorities include developing a divisional strategic plan, leading an Official Plan review process, refining public consultation to provide more access to city building conversations, transit planning, midrise development on the City of Toronto's many avenues, and overseeing development review for over 4000 applications annually.
Jennifer is the founder of Project Walk, which premiered its first short film in 2011, as an official selection at TIFF. In 2012 Jennifer debuted her first TED talk, Walk to School and in 2013 she delivered her second, Own Your City. Jennifer is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario (combined honours English and Philosophy) and has a Master in Environmental Studies (Politics and Planning) from York University.

Her is the link to her Youtube channel to see what I mean: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9U1qvl_RfKj_ffmkJxxrYQ

EPISODE BREAKDOWN: On this episode of Breaking the Set, Abby Martin, discusses the recent guilty verdict for four former employees of the private mercenary force, Blackwater, over the killing of 17 Iraqi civilians, but points out that Blackwater Founder, Erik Prince, still remains free. Abby then speaks with author and peace activist, Miko Peled, about the decisions by Sweden and the UK to recognize Palestine and whether this represents more than just a symbolic gesture. BTS then features live coverage of a partial solar eclipse. Abby then goes over some of the phrases and terms that are used by politicians in order to dehumanize victims of war and absolve top policy makers from responsibility. BTS wraps up the show with an interview with Bhaskar Sunkara, founder of Jacobin Magazine, about public housing policies in New York City and how they have done little to rein in mass inequality.
