Private transport (as opposed to public transport) is transportation service which is not available for use by the general public. Often public transportation service providers are privately owned; notwithstanding, any and all services provided by such companies that is available to the general public is considered public transport. While private transportation may be used alongside nearly all modes of public transportation, private transportation by rail is rare. Unlike many forms of public transportation, which may be subsidized, the entire cost of private transportation is born directly or indirectly by the user.
Private transport is the dominant form of transportation in most of the world. In the United States, for example, 86.2% of passenger miles are by passenger vehicles, motorcycles, and trucks.
Examples of private transport are listed below.

Public transport, though many people doubt its positive aspects, is more efficient than private transport
Collective Mobility Solutions as the Key to Increasing Sustainability The current transport debate is centred around the car, electric or other fuels for the car, and conventional public transport with fixed routes and fixed timetables. Professor Parkhurst argues that none of these approaches are likely to address the situation we face today, of energy scarcity and limited public funding. A more realistic alternative is collective mobility, where public and private transport are combined with demand-response services such as car clubs, car pooling, bike hire and taxi buses. It offers the potential to support rapid change towards greater efficiency without intensifying socioeconomic shock. Filmed as part of the UWE Public Lecture Series
