But in an exclusive interview he talks to Al Jazeera's Steve Chao about where the island is going, protests against the controversial trade agreement with China, and how he thinks the rest of the world should respond to China's rise.
Editor's note: An earlier version of this interview incorrectly translated President Ma Ying-jeou as saying Taiwan is the only place in China practicing democracy. In fact, he said "Taiwan is the only place in ethnic Chinese societies where we are able to practice democracy". This version of the interview contains the correct translation.

On June 2, 2015, the Taiwan Democracy Project at Stanford's Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) hosted a special panel session featuring the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Ma Ying-jeou. President Ma spoke via live video feed to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and the long history of the U.S.-R.O.C. relationship. Following his prepared remarks, the president engaged in a question-and-answer session with the audience and a distinguished panel of leading Stanford faculty and fellows, chaired and moderated by the former Secretary of Defense of the United States, William J. Perry.
---
About the Speaker
Ma Ying-jeou has served as the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) since May 2008. As president, Ma Ying-jeou has worked to address the repercussions of the global financial crisis, stepping up efforts to bring about a more diversified industrial structure and to jump-start new engines for economic growth in Taiwan. President Ma has also attached great importance to promoting energy conservation and carbon reduction, which has helped Taiwan’s energy efficiency to exceed two percent. In addition, his administration worked to craft a response to regional economic integration, successfully negotiating the landmark Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) with the People's Republic of China in 2010. President Ma's creative diplomacy has brought a significant improvement in cross-Strait relations while putting an end to a long and vituperative standoff between the two sides in the diplomatic sphere.

Taiping Island in the Spratly Islands, which belongs to Taiwan, will have basic infrastructure completed by the end of the year. The outgoing president, Ma Ying-jeou will travel there on Dec 12, to declare sovereignty and reiterate the South China Sea peace initiative. Analysts admit that if President Ma lands on the island, the United States may not be pleased, but Taiwan is not party to any dispute, and it will not increase the complexity of the South China Sea issue.

TAIPEI, TAIWAN — As far as lame-ducks go, Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou is by far the lamest. Ma's administration has done nothing but seek closer ties with China in a promise that the Chinese would solve all of Taiwan's economic problems. Eight years on, the only thing that's positive is Chinese tourists completely blow.
The KMT ran out of China like cowards after losing the civil war to the CCP only to come to Taiwan and continue their corrupt, incompetent existence. Thank god the Taiwanese people developed democracy in spite of them and now are ready to vote the KMT out of office.
Which brings us to the surprise summit between Ma and Dictator Xi Jinping Saturday in China-loving Singapore. Beijing is delusional if it thinks it can influence Taiwanese voters with a meeting where the two leaders will address each other as "mister" rather than "president."
The Mister-Mister meeting will be nothing more than a glorified photo shoot followed by a lovely dinner and possibly a scenic stroll to take in some of Singapore's toxic haze. The only thing historic about the meet with be the continued historically bad reporting by Western media on Taiwan.

After President Ma Ying-jeou's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Ma held a press conference at which he personally answered questions. He repeatedly stressed the importance of the 1992 consensus to cross-strait development. Regarding China's military deployment, President Ma also directly expressed to Xi that the people of Taiwan were concerned about this. Xi told him that the military deployment was not directly against Taiwan.
馬習會後,馬總統親自召開記者會,會中多次強調九二共識對兩岸發展的重要性。同時針對大陸軍事部署,馬總統也當面向習近平表達台灣民眾顧慮,習近平向他表示,軍事部署不是針對台灣。
