A representative democracy, its capital is Guatemala de la Asunción, also known as Guatemala City. Guatemala's abundance of biologically significant and unique ecosystems contributes to Mesoamerica's designation as a biodiversity hotspot. The former Mayan civilization was a Mesoamerican civilization, which continued throughout the Post-Classic period until the arrival of the Spanish. The Mayas live in Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, the southern part of Mexico and northern parts of El Salvador.
Guatemala became independent from Spain in 1821, joining the Mexican Empire. After it became an independent country in its own right, it was ruled by a series of dictators, assisted by the United Fruit Company. The late 20th century saw Guatemala embroiled in a 36-year-long civil war. Following the war, Guatemala has witnessed both economic growth and successful democratic elections. In the most recent election, held in 2011, Otto Pérez Molina of the Patriotic Party, won the presidency.

Guatemala lies between latitudes 13° and 18°N, and longitudes 88° and 93°W.
The country is mountainous with small desert and sand dune patches, hilly valleys, except for the south coastal area and the vast northern lowlands of Petén department. Two mountain chains enter Guatemala from west to east, dividing the country into three major regions: the highlands, where the mountains are located; the Pacific coast, south of the mountains; and the Petén region, north of the mountains. All major cities are located in the highlands and Pacific coast regions; by comparison, Petén is sparsely populated. These three regions vary in climate, elevation, and landscape, providing dramatic contrasts between hot, humid tropical lowlands and colder, drier highland peaks. Volcán Tajumulco, at 4,220 m, is the highest point in the Central American states.
The rivers are short and shallow in the Pacific drainage basin, larger and deeper in the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico drainage basins, which include the Polochic and Dulce Rivers, which drain into Lake Izabal, the Motagua River, the Sarstún that forms the boundary with Belize, and the Usumacinta River, which forms the boundary between Petén and Chiapas, Mexico.
Guatemala has long claimed all or part of the territory of neighboring Belize, currently an independent Commonwealth Realm which recognises Queen Elizabeth II as its Head of State. Due to this territorial dispute, Guatemala recognized Belize's independence until 1990, but the dispute is not resolved. Negotiations are currently underway under the auspices of the Organization of American States and the Commonwealth of Nations to conclude it.

Children of the fourth World - Documentary
60 Minute Documentary - First Aired Nationally on PBS in 1999. Emmy Winner.
In the early 1990's while filming a Presidential Election in Guatelmala City, Film maker John Biffar met an American woman, Kari Engen. She had traveled to Guatemala City several years earlier on a mission to help poor, and hungry children. When she arrived in Guatemala city she learned of the plight of the children, many lost and abandoned. Living on the streets - After all, this was "The Third World." But then she learned of the children living in the dump. An entire subculture of people in a trash pile. This was "The Fourth World." Her life's mission has become helping these children to escape the deadly grasp and cycle of life in the dump. Her program, Mi Refugio is the result. John has documented her struggles, triumphs and tragedies for two decades. This documentary was produced in the late 1990's by Bush Entertainment and Trilogy Media, John's production company. Hosted by and Narrated by Film Actress Ali MacGraw. We are known as Dreamtime Entertainment today. I edited and filmed much of this program and it's a touching and an emotional rollercoaster as it was when I edited way back then on our Media 100 editing system. It still gives me the shivers. I hope you enjoy this program and it inspires you to change the world too. Like Kari is still doing. Go to www.mirefugio.org to help her.
Mi Refugio is a nonprofit corporation with tax exempt status (#52-1610744) in the USA. Contributions should be made out to Mi Refugio and mailed to 4908 Jasmine Drive, Rockville, Maryland 20853. www.mirefugio.org
Dave Says, "This program is not another video about a religious mission to convert people, it's not about a religious anything. It's about one person following her heart. Dedicating her life and all she believes to helping these children, and their families have a better life. For those of us in the US, this documentary gives us evidence that the SMALLEST thing, the most insignificant thing in our lives here in this country could be HUGE for a child living in a Central American dump. But amidst all that dirt and despair, a light can shine through it all...powered by belief that it can be changed. And the most humble person with no means at all, can make that change a reality. According to Kari, that happens when we look into our hearts and ask god. (or whatever deity it is that you believe in, or if you don't believe in any, then ask...just ask and see if you get an answer back)

Travel Guatemala || Tikal, Going Back In Time
Oh, Tikal. How I loved you and how I hated you. This part of Guatemala was quite the adventure for us. From a failed sunrise tour, to EPIC sunset shots, to a sketchy awful tour guide who tried to screw us, to the heat, the elation, the wonder and awe...it was literally everything wrapped in 14 hours. I was insanely tired but also insanely excited. We got some amazing footage, but it was a huge challenge to get it (carrying all that equipment! AHHH!). All in all, I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat, but I would do things a little differently. I'll lay it all out for you guys so you can learn from my mistakes, and the things we did right! -
In this Guatemala and Antigua travel video guide, I head down to Guatemala and explore scenic Antigua, hike Volcano Pacaya, take a road trip to Lake Atitlan (and ride a horse along its banks), then head north to Tikal, home to the capital of the once mighty Mayan Empire, where I climb the many temples that have been discovered at the site.

Guatemala Travel Video Guide - Guatemala has a rich and distinctive culture from the long mix of elements from Spain and the native Maya people. This diverse history and the natural beauty of the land have created a destination rich in interesting and scenic sites.
Spanning a mountainous slice of Central America immediately south of Mexico, Guatemala is loaded with incredible natural, historical and cultural appeal. As the birthplace and heartland of the ancient Maya, the country is in many ways defined by the legacy of this early civilization. Their rainforest cities were abandoned centuries ago, but Maya people continue to thrive in the Guatemalan highlands, where traditions and religious rituals, mingled with Catholic practices, endure to form the richest and most distinctive indigenous identity in the hemisphere.
Guatemala today is very much a synthesis of Maya and colonial traditions, fused with the omnipresent influences of twenty-first century Latin and North American culture. Baroque churches dating back to the Spanish Conquest coexist with pagan temples that have been sites of worship for millennia. Highland street markets prosper alongside vast glitzy shopping malls, and pre-Columbian festival dances are performed by teenage hip-hop fans.

Travel to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Belize to delve into the legacies of the ancient Mayan civilization. More than 3,000 years ago this sophisticated culture emerged from the humid rain forests, flourished for centuries, and then vanished. In that time, the Mayans created a complex writing system, devised a calendar equivalent to our own, introduced the concept of zero in mathematics, predicted lunar and solar eclipses, and built the tallest structures in the western hemisphere—all while Paris was just a sleepy village. Today, their ghostly remnants are scattered across Central America in an ancient, 1,500-mile-long trade ring known as La Ruta Maya. From ruins to rituals to rural villages, we'll trace the footsteps of the enigmatic Mayan culture as only OAT can—in our trademark small groups. Along the way, we'll meet modern-day descendants preserving their Mayan heritage with jade carvings, colorful weavings, and warm hospitality. Join us as we travel back in time to explore the Route of the Maya.

Santo Tomas De Castilla (Matías de Gálvez) - Guatemala tourism
Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube
Santo Tomás de Castilla, also known as Matías de Gálvez is a port city in the Izabal Department, Guatemala.
Seaport
===========
The seaport of the city was built in 1976, after an earthquake had severely damaged the port of Puerto Barrios. Today it is among the busiest in Central America and currently expanding. The port is located next to a free trade zone, the Zona de Libre Industria y Comercio Santo Tomás de Castilla, called Zolic. The port currently employs 2,100 workers. In 2004, 4.56 million tons of trading goods went through the port from 1,372 ships.
Cruise industry
===========
In 2004, a cruise ship terminal was completed and Santo Tomás de Castilla started receiving cruise ships. The cruise ship terminal has been a tremendous boost for the Guatemalan tourism industry. Four cruise ships a month, carrying 1,500 passengers each, make a stop here. Cruise ship passengers visit Guatemala chiefly for its Mayan culture, which sites are located throughout the country. Puerto Barrios Airport is being refurbished in order to handle small planes to transport ship passengers for day trips to Tikal or other places in Guatemala. Nearby attractions include Rio Dulce, Lake Izabal, the towns of Puerto Barrios, Livingston and San Felipe Castle, and the Mayan ruins of Quirigua.

-Nathalie

What we booked:
Tikal sunrise tour AND sunset tour through Posada Del Cerro, who works with San Juan Travel. Beware a tour guide named Ruben! He tried to screw us over. I don't recommend the sunrise tour - see video. The sunset tour is much, much better.

On September 1, 2004, heavily armed extremists, mostly from the republics of Chechnya and Ingushetia, overran School No. 1 in Beslan, Russia. More than 1,200 children and adults were held hostage in the school gymnasium. Voting underway in Guatemala's general elections
Guatemalans are casting their ballots in general elections amid public anger over what they consider as rampant corruption among government officials.
Seven and a half million voters are eligible to cast ballots for president, vice president, and a new Congress. The situation is reportedly calm as the voting is ongoing. The capital Guatemala City has been the scene of frequent protests against corruption among officials. The elections come days after Guatemala’s president was jailed on corruption charges. Several other government officials are also on trial.

Young people are favorite targets of mass media, but rarely do they have the opportunity to create programming. Beyond Borders aims to remedy that imbalance. Adult mentors and media professionals at Listen Up! Youth Media Network train and assist youngsters, age 13-19, to write, shoot, edit and even animate short films that chronicle their experiences in challenging circumstances. The 2006 films include Diana Guevara’s powerful account of her rape by a gang-member neighbor in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and how discovering theater restored her self-esteem and gave her a sense of purpose. Only 10, Mohamed Sidibay, of Freetown, Sierra Leone, depicts his earlier life as a machinegun-toting child soldier. Sahar Adish, now a pre-med student at the University of Virginia, recalls her educated family’s persecution by and escape from the Taliban in Afghanistan. For believing young people have important stories to tell and providing them with the means to turn them into films, a Peabody goes to Beyond Borders: Personal Stories from a Small Planet.

Winner 2005 | BBC in association with HBO Documentary Films, Evanston Township High School (Evanston, IL), La Camioneta (Guatemala City, Guatemala)
On September 1, 2004, heavily armed extremists, mostly from the republics of Chechnya and Ingushetia, overran School No. 1 in Beslan, Russia. More than 1,200 children and adults were held hostage in the school gymnasium. When the Russian military’s siege ended on September 3 in a firefight with the hostage-takers, more than 350 people were killed, half of them children. Children of Beslan tells the story of this tragedy through interviews with the youngest survivors of the ordeal. The children, ranging in age from 6 to 12, tell of the events that robbed them of their families, friends, and their innocence. Delicately crafted by producer/director Leslie Woodhead and producer/director Ewa Ewart in collaboration with executive producers Sheila Nevins, Alan Hayling, and Fiona Stourton and supervising producer Lisa Heller, this evocative and poignant documentary exposes the devastating impact violent conflict has on children. Featuring interviews with more than a dozen young survivors, as well as chilling footage shot by the hostage-takers themselves, Children of Beslan reminds us all of the irreparable consequences of terrorism and for its sensitivity in doing this receives a Peabody Award.

Guatemala City, is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Guatemala and Central America. It had a population of 1,075,000 as of 2009. It is also the capital city of the local Municipio de Guatemala, and Guatemala Department.
Guatemala officially the Republic of Guatemala is a country in Central America bordered by Mexico to the north and west, the Pacific Ocean to the southwest, Belize to the northeast, the Caribbean to the east, and Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast. Its area is 108,890 km2 (42,043 mi2) with an estimated population of 13,276,517.A representative democracy, its capital is Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción, also known as Guatemala City. Guatemala's abundance of biologically significant and unique ecosystems contributes to Mesoamerica's designation as a biodiversity hotspot. The former Mayan civilization was a Mesoamerican civilization, which continued throughout the Post-Classic period until the arrival of the Spanish. They had lived in Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, the southern part of Mexico and eastern parts of El Salvador.Guatemala became independent from Spain in 1821. After independence it was ruled by a series of dictators, assisted by the United Fruit Company. From 1960 to 1996, Guatemala underwent a civil war fought between the government and leftist rebels. Following the war, Guatemala has witnessed both economic growth and successful democratic elections. In the most recent election, held in 2011, Otto Pérez Molina of the Patriotic Party won the presidency.

Day by Day Itinerary
Small Groups: Never more than 10-16 travelers—guaranteed!

We fly into the Guatemala city airport and then take a shuttle bus directly to Antigua. From there we climb a volcano before heading to Lake Atitlan to visit 5 little towns, reachable only by boat. Guatemala City Travel Guide: Guatemala City is located in the department (territorial division) of Guatemala, and it's the capital of the country. All the main highways start at Kilómetro 0, located inside Palacio Nacional de la Cultura (National Palace), in Centro Histórico (Historic Center).
Guatemala City became the capital after Antigua Guatemala had been destroyed by an earthquake in 1773. With a population of around 3 million people, Guatemala City is the largest and most modern city in Guatemala. It can be interesting to visit "Guate," as it is also called by the locals. Guatemala City has attractions and restaurants, often with few tourists. Sunday evenings' gatherings of hundreds of locals at the main plaza is certainly an unforgettable experience.
It's this genuine and profound hospitality combined with the city's outstanding cultural legacy and astonishing natural beauty that makes Guatemala City such a compelling place for travellers.

Guatemala Adventure Travel: Everyone who arrives at Guatemala leaves better, more complete. With an adventure that wasn't expected. That is why in Guatemala we would like to show you something more than lakes and volcanoes, more than Mayan cities and more than towns full of color.
Guatemala is still a developing nation, a young democracy with a turbulent and bloody history that's beset by deep-rooted inequalities. And yet, despite alarming levels of poverty and unemployment, most Guatemalans are extraordinarily courteous and helpful to travellers, and only too eager to help you catch the right bus or practise your Spanish.
It's this genuine and profound hospitality combined with the country's outstanding cultural legacy and astonishing natural beauty that makes Guatemala such a compelling place for travellers.

A three-storey building has collapsed and fell into a huge sink hole in Guatemala City. The giant 200ft-deep crater appeared after Guatemala was hit by tropi.
Winner 2006 | Listen Up! Youth Media Network (New York, NY) with Polimorfo (Bogota Colombia), iEarn Sierra Leone (Freetown, Sierra Leone), Evanston Township High School (Evanston, IL), La Camioneta (Guatemala City, Guatemala), Sawtona (Amman, Jordan), Frame By Frame Fierce (New York, NY), Light House (Charlottesville, VA), Spy Hop Productions (Salt Lake City, UT), Our Voice (Kiev, Ukraine)

In April 2015, a group of over 100 volunteers traveled to Guatemala City to help hundreds of young men and women prepare to serve LDS missions. They provided assistance in filling out missionary papers, haircuts, missionary photos, blood and urine tests, missionary medical exams, dental hygiene, hygiene training, comprehensive restorative dentistry, endodontics, and oral surgery. They also provided service for orphanages, a children's cancer hospital, a maternity hospital, and families in need.

What would ONE town in the USA look like if this happened here? Can you even imagine the change to business, schools, police, government, and more? Well, I think it's worth dying for. What about you? Then GO and cry and pray and beg for Him to show up in YOUR town and forgive your sins and light your Lampstand.
