Bamboo pole rowing competition was held on Saturday in south China city to mark the annual Duanwu Festival.
People took part in bamboo pole rowing races on a river in Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County, in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
The rowers balanced themselves each on an eight-meter-long bamboo pole, 15 centimeters in diameter, and then propelled themselves forward by using a four-meter-long pole as a paddle.
People living along the Chishui River in the northern part of southwestern Guizhou Province have traveled on water in this way for some 2,000 years. It was listed as a competition event in China's national games of traditional ethnic sports in 2011.
The Duanwu Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, is celebrated annually on the fifth day of the fifth month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. It is traditionally celebrated by holding dragon boat races, drinking traditional rice wine and eating zongzi, a sticky rice delicacy wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves.

Duanwu Festival, a yearly celebration that takes place on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar, from June 20 to 22, conmemorates the death of poet Qu Yuan. Qu Yuan was an idealist in the Warring States perior, who drowned himself in the Mi Lou river, as a protest to the moral and politic decadence of the time. Therefore, his neighbors tried to recover his body, but as it seemed impossible, they decided to throw rice in the water to feed the fish, and avoid the poet’s body from being eaten. Bamboo pole rowing competition was held on Saturday in south China city to mark the annual Duanwu Festival.
People took part in bamboo pole rowing races on a river in Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County, in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
The rowers balanced themselves each on an eight-meter-long bamboo pole, 15 centimeters in diameter, and then propelled themselves forward by using a four-meter-long pole as a paddle.
People living along the Chishui River in the northern part of southwestern Guizhou Province have traveled on water in this way for some 2,000 years. It was listed as a competition event in China's national games of traditional ethnic sports in 2011.
The Duanwu Festival, also known as the Dragon Boat Festival, is celebrated annually on the fifth day of the fifth month of the traditional Chinese lunar calendar. It is traditionally celebrated by holding dragon boat races, drinking traditional rice wine and eating zongzi, a sticky rice delicacy wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves.

Duanwu Festival, a yearly celebration that takes place on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar, from June 20 to 22, conmemorates the death of poet Qu Yuan.
Qu Yuan was an idealist in the Warring States perior, who drowned himself in the Mi Lou river, as a protest to the moral and politic decadence of the time.
Therefore, his neighbors tried to recover his body, but as it seemed impossible, they decided to throw rice in the water to feed the fish, and avoid the poet’s body from being eaten.

"I think the atmosphere is great. Everyone is so happy. Whether we win or lose is not the point. To feel happy is the most important thing," rower Zhai Chen said.
The intense competition lured many visitors. Gao Hongyu, a tourist from Anhui's Ma An Shan city, said she thought this tradition is a reflection of Chinese spirit.
"I came here with my 55 friends today to watch the competition. China is a "land of dragon" and we always say Chinese people are descendants of dragon. This dragon boat racing before the festival has strong ethnic characteristics," she said.
In east China's Jiangxi Province, people are celebrating the holiday with another form of activity: Caijie (street walk). More than 1,000 people paraded in over 30 formations, holding various folk custom goods.

Qu Yuan committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River because of his despair over the king allying with the state of Qin.
The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu, is celebrated annually on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. It falls on June 20 this year.
For thousands of years, the festival has been celebrated by eating zongzi and holding dragon boat races.
Zongzi, is a glutinous rice dumpling which is wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves and filled with other ingredients. Traditions of making the special dish vary across different parts of China.
The Dragon Boat Festival is also celebrated by many ethnic minority groups across China.
