As I've said before I have no quarrel with any of you gentlemen. But if Mr Schultz insists on coming uptown, I have no choice but to make my presence felt... Enough with the compliments.::Bumpy Johnson: Perhaps you gentlemen to need some more time to consider my proposal.::Dutch Schultz: We ain't gotta consider a fucking thing! [Picks up a green slip] Your days are numbered. Your part of the expression. You're pretty smart for a nigger.::Bumpy Johnson: Yeah so are you.::Dutch Schultz: Ooh that's good-that's good. Insult the man that holds your destiny between his fingers.::Bumpy Johnson: So you got some slips. I beat the wraphands down.::Dutch Schultz: Oh, like the glorious Madam Queen policy? [Tears the green slip as he stands abruptly, then throws it on the table] My judge is gonna send your black ass to fuckin' jail. *Jesus Christ*! [storms out]::Lucky Luciano: [looking at Bumpy] Your move.

Although it is billed as a Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges album, Side by Side is a 1959 album mostly under the leadership of Johnny Hodges, Duke Ellington's alto saxophonist for many years. Ellington only appears on three of this album's tracks. The album places Hodges at the fore, backing him with piano by Ellington or Billy Strayhorn and providing other accompaniment by well-known jazz figures like Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Harry "Sweets" Edison and Jo Jones. The album, a follow-up to the popular Back to Back: Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges Play the Blues, has remained perpetually in print.
Track Listing:
1. "Stompy Jones" (Duke Ellington)
2. "Just Squeeze Me" (Fats Waller, Clarence Williams)
3. "Big Shoe" (Jimmy Hamilton)
4. "Going Up" (D. Ellington)
5. "Just a Memory" (Lew Brown, Buddy DeSylva, Ray Henderson)
6. "Let's Fall in Love" (Harold Arlen, Ted Koehler)
7. "Ruint" (Mercer Ellington, Johnny Hodges)
8. "Bend One" (Hodges)

From www.allmusic.com:
This set documents a historic occasion. Although Coleman Hawkins had been an admirer of Duke Ellington's music for at least 35 years at this point and Ellington had suggested they record together at least 20 years prior to their actual meeting in 1962, this was their first (and only) meeting on record. Although it would have been preferable to hear the great tenor performing with the full orchestra, his meeting with Ellington and an all-star group taken out of the big band does feature such greats as Ray Nance on cornet and violin, trombonist Lawrence Brown, altoist Johnny Hodges, and baritonist Harry Carney. High points include an exuberant "The Jeep Is Jumpin'," an interesting remake of "Mood Indigo," and a few new Ellington pieces. This delightful music is recommended in one form or another.
Tracklist:
1- Limbo Jazz
2- Mood Indigo
3- Ray Charle's Place
4- Wanderlust
5- You Dirty Dog
6- Self-Portrait (Of The Bean)
7- The Jeep is Jumpin'
8- The Ricitic
9- Solitude

Fantastic performance footage of one of Jazz's greatest stars - Duke Ellington. With performances of song of his most famous songs including "Mood Indigo", "Caravan" & "Sophisticated Lady"
Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington was an American composer, pianist, and big-band leader. Ellington wrote over 1,000 compositions. A major figure in the history of jazz, Ellington's music stretched into various other genres. His career spanned more than 50 years and included leading his orchestra, composing an inexhaustible songbook, scoring for movies, composing stage musicals, and world tours. Several of his instrumental works were adapted into songs that became standards. Due to his inventive use of the orchestra, or big band, and thanks to his eloquence and extraordinary charisma, he is generally considered to have elevated the perception of jazz to an art form on a par with other traditional genres of music. His reputation increased after his death and the Pulitzer Prize Board bestowed on him a special posthumous honor in 1999.
Ellington called his music "American Music" rather than jazz, and liked to describe those who impressed him as "beyond category."
1. Sophisticated Lady
2. Caravan
3. The Mooch
4. V.I.P's Boogie
5. Solitude (With Jimmie Grissom)

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (April 29, 1899 – May 24, 1974) was an American composer, pianist and bandleader of jazz orchestras. He led his orchestra from 1923 until his death, his career spanning over 50 years.
Born in Washington, D.C., Ellington was based in New York City from the mid-1920s onward, and gained a national profile through his orchestra's appearances at the Cotton Club in Harlem. In the 1930s, his orchestra toured in Europe. Though widely considered to have been a pivotal figure in the history of jazz, Ellington embraced the phrase "beyond category" as a liberating principle, and referred to his music as part of the more general category of American Music, rather than to a musical genre such as jazz.

This video clip speaks for itself regarding the intersection of jazz and the civil rights struggle.
The woman being interviewed is Marian Logan (1920-93), Duke's long-time friend. She was a cabaret singer in her youth and, as an adult, a civil rights advocate and New York City Commissioner of Human Rights.
The link below will direct you to the Wikipedia site with fascinating information about the Logan family tree. For example, her father was the first treasurer of Tuskegee Institute in 1882. http://tinyurl.com/7bb9j74
