Journalists watched a hearing of the trial on three TV screens, which broadcast simultaneously from courtrooms in Tripoli, Zintan and Misrata. Accused of several crimes including murder during the country's 2011 civil war, Gadhafi appeared dressed in a blue prison uniform and sat alone. Authorities in Tripoli have tried to transfer Gadhafi to the capital so he can stand trial in person, but so far negotiations with the militia holding him have failed. 37 other defendants, mostly officials from the regime of late Moammar Gadhafi, sat behind bars in heavily-secured courtrooms. Among those present was former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senoussi, who spoke to the court from behind the court room bars, and Abu Zead Dorda, former Chief of External Intelligence during the last years of Gadhafi's regime. *** On May 19th Libya's parliament chief ordered Islamist-led militias to deploy in the capital Tripoli, trying to impose control after forces loyal to a renegade general stormed the legislature's building. On May 18th, militias backing general Khalifa Hifter stormed parliament and ransacked the building before withdrawing to the southern part of the capital, where they clashed with rivals in fighting that reportedly killed two and wounded 50. Several windows of the parliament building have been smashed and bullet holes could be seen in others. The military and police remain shattered since the civil war that ousted Moammar Gadhafi and the central government has almost no authority. As well as controlling many areas of the country, militias also wield heavy influence over the political scene. Some support Islamist political parties, which hold the majority in parliament, while others back the Islamists' political opponents.
