Harlots Housewives And Heroines A 17th Century History For Girls - Episode Act One At Court
Act One: At Court
Lucy Worsley explores the captivating lives of the women of the period. The years after the Civil War and the Restoration of Charles II marked the end of the medieval and the beginning of the modern age. These were exciting times for women and some rose to prominence like never before. Some had remarkably modern attitudes and ambitions and achieved wealth, celebrity and power t

In Plymouth, Massachusetts- the site of the first English colony in America - Matteo Brault spends his days living a 17th century life, along with dozens of other re-enactors on the modern-day Plimoth Plantation.
“The year is 1627. This is Plymouth Colony, an English town set up by Reformed Church people… these people hope to own land, they are struggling on the edge of a wilderness, they stayed on the Mayflower until they were able to build simple structures.”
The simplest homes in town were built using cratchets- natural forks in trees- as support for the ridgepole of the roof.
The walls are built up with “wattle”- small sticks for the lattice structure- and “daub”- a mortar of clay, earth and grasses. Instead of using the traditional English lime wash to protect the walls, the colonists took advantage of the plentiful wood in the America and created clapboard siding by cleaving wood into thin boards.
For the thatch roofs, large bundles of water reed or wheat straw are woven with a giant needle by two people working in tandem (one outside and one inside). “It’s like a giant quilt made of grass,” explains Brault, “which makes a water-tight roof that essentially acts as a giant sponge. It absorbs water and laps it off.”
Brault works full-time as a 17th-century style blacksmith, using traditional tools like a grindstone, hand-made nails and a large bellows for making the fire hot enough for forging iron and steel. He loves the challenge of this type of work, but he’s not a luddite.
“My whole life revolves around this stuff but that does not equate that I want to go back in time and be an English blacksmith… If you do the research into this period it’s not a pleasant time to live. So I’m not nostalgic but what I am is someone who appreciates the past and I appreciate my forebears and as a modern blacksmith you have to appreciate your roots to know who you are and where you’re going.”
The Plimoth Plantation and English village are open to visitors from March through November. The site also has a native Wampanoag homesite (we will tour in a separate video).

These selections of English Country Dances from the publications of the English music publisher John Playford are recorded and played so well as to relegate any criticism to spoiled grapes. Perhaps a musicologist might carp on some fine points, but then again probably not - musicologists actually enjoy a good tune, too. There is a nice couple pages of notes by Jack Ashworth on the historical background of the music, and a further short page by David Douglass on how he envisioned the 'nature' of several of the pieces. There is also a French translation following the English notes. Seven instruments are mixed higgledy-piggledy as the performers deem best - a copy of a 1652 Amati Violin, and copies of a Theorbo, a Cittern, a 16-string harp, an Italian Double Harp, an Irish Harp, and a Guitar. For the curious Douglass plays the violin only, but offers playing consanguineous with his name.
Among the choices cut 15 - "Long Cold Nights" - seems almost New Age in its evocation of the heavens: one might be in Big Sur looking up at the stars. The many other pieces come in divers moods and tempi, with great care given to which instruments are employed. It's difficult to imagine anyone disliking such engaging tunes, such joy in their making. The recording is of course digital so it helps to have a system capable of taming the inevitable string stridencies, but that said - if you like music from this period, or are curious, this CD offers a wonderful selection.

Act One: At Court
Lucy Worsley explores the captivating lives of the women of the period. The years after the Civil War and the Restoration of Charles II marked the end of the medieval and the beginning of the modern age. These were exciting times for women and some rose to prominence like never before. Some had remarkably modern attitudes and ambitions and achieved wealth, celebrity and power that still seems outstanding even by 21st century standards. But, at the same time, they faced a world that was still predominantly male, misogynistic and positively medieval in its outlook. Lucy investigates the lives of the king's mistresses at the royal court, amongst them the royalist Barbara Villiers, the French spy Louise de Keroualle and the Cockney actress Nell Gwynn. Along her journey, she gets the full mistress make-over, takes to the dance floor and treads the corridors of power.

The Dutch Empire comprised the overseas territories controlled by the Dutch Republic and, later, the modern Netherlands from the 17th century to the mid-1950s. The Dutch followed Portugal and Spain in establishing an overseas colonial empire. For this, they were aided by their skills in shipping and trade and the surge of nationalism accompanying the struggle for independence from Spain. Alongside the British, the Dutch initially built up colonial possessions on the basis of indirect state capitalist corporate colonialism, via the Dutch East and West India Companies. Dutch exploratory voyages such as those led by Willem Barentsz, Henry Hudson and Abel Tasman revealed vast new territories to Europeans, particularly in the Arctic Sea, North America, in the Pacific, Australia, and New Zealand.
With Dutch naval power rising rapidly as a major force from the late 16th century, the Netherlands dominated global commerce during the second half of the 17th century during a cultural flowering known as the Dutch Golden Age. The Netherlands lost many of its colonial possessions, as well as its global power status, to the British when the metropole fell to French armies during the Revolutionary Wars. The restored portions of the Dutch Empire, notably the Dutch East Indies and Suriname, remained under Dutch control until the decline of European imperialism following World War II. Since the 1950s, the Netherlands has been organized as constituent countries composing the Kingdom of the Netherlands. As of October 10, 2010, the countries within the kingdom are the Netherlands proper, Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten.

Louis XIV enjoyed visiting his fruit and vegetable gardens. Enriched with exotic plants by the numerous botanical expeditions that took place during the 17th century, the king's gardens were a true agronomical laboratory and the admiration of the courts of Europe. They provided plant specimens for academics, illustrators and engravers. Louis XIV was passionate about the natural sciences, and in 1666, at the suggestion of his minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert, he founded France's Royal Academy of Sciences. One of the tasks it undertook was to record and disseminate contemporary plant knowledge through Histoire des Plantes, a botanical history illustrated with engravings. Louis XIV's Botanical Engravings contains a collection of seventy of the watercolour engravings produced during the reign of Louis XIV, which are now preserved in the Louvre and the Musee d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris. These exquisite illustrations allow us to familiarise ourselves with some of the plants brought back from distant lands, and to understand the contribution they made to scientific research, as well as their beneficial properties.

Donegal or Donegal Town is a town in County Donegal, Ireland. The name was historically written in English as Dunnagall or Dunagall.
Donegal gave its name to County Donegal, although Lifford is now the county town. Until the early 17th century, Donegal was the 'capital' of Tír Chonaill, a Gaelic kingdom controlled by the O'Donnell Clan of the Cenél Conaill. Donegal sits at the mouth of the River Eske and Donegal Bay, which is overshadowed by the Bluestack Mountains. The town is bypassed by the N15 and N56 roads. The centre of the town, known as The Diamond, is a hub for music, poetic and cultural gatherings in the area.

Connemara is a district in the west of Ireland, the boundaries of which are not well defined. Some define it to be the land contained by Killary Harbour, the Maam Valley, Lough Corrib; a line from there to the sea at Barna and the Atlantic Ocean. The historical territory of Connemara, as defined by the 17th century historian Ruaidhrí Ó Flaithbheartaigh in his book West or H-Iar Connaught, was coextensive with the barony of Ballynahinch, This is a broad peninsula stretching from Killary Harbour on the north to Kilkieran Bay on the south. The boundary runs from the north along the spine of the Maumturk Mountains then along a series of small rivers and across upland west of Maam Cross eventually following the course of the Invermore river before meeting the sea west of the Ros Muc peninsula.

The Domestic canary, often simply known as the canary, (Serinus canaria forma domestica[2]) is a domesticated form of the wild canary, a small songbird in the finch family originating from the Macaronesian Islands (Azores, Madeira and Canary Islands).
Canaries were first bred in captivity in the 17th century. They were brought over by Spanish sailors to Europe. This bird became expensive and fashionable to breeding in courts of Spanish and English kings.[3][4] Monks started breeding them and only sold the males (which sing). This kept the birds in short supply and drove the price up. Eventually Italians obtained hens and were able to breed the birds themselves. This made them very popular and resulted in many breeds arising and the birds being bred all over Europe.
The same occurred in England. First the birds were only owned by the rich but eventually the local citizens started to breed them and, again, they became very popular. Many breeds arose through selective breeding, and they are still very popular today for their voice.

The Material World in 17th-Century Dutch Painting
Edward S. Cooke, Jr.

A 17th Century History For Girls - Episode 2 At Home - BBC Documentary
Lucy looks at the ordinary as well as the extraordinary lives of women in the home, in an age when respectable women were defined by their marital status as maids, wives or widows. If they fell outside these categories they were in danger of being labelled whores or, at worst, witches. While history has left many women voiceless over the centuries, Lucy discovers that in the Restoration a surprisi

Act Three: At Work and at Play
Lucy looks at some of the most remarkable women of the age, including writers, actresses, travellers and scientists. Against a backdrop of religious and political turmoil, the rise of print culture, the rapid growth of London, the burgeoning scientific revolution and the country's flourishing trading empire, she meets a host of female mavericks who took advantage of the extraordinary changes afoot to challenge the traditional male bastions of society. Women like Nell Gwyn, the most famous of a new generation of actresses; Aphra Behn, the first professional female writer; and Christian Davies, who disguised herself as a man to fight as a soldier - all of them gained notoriety and celebrity, challenging the inequalities of the age. As Lucy discovers, these women's attitudes, ambitions and achievements were surprisingly modern.

Lucy looks at the ordinary as well as the extraordinary lives of women in the home, in an age when respectable women were defined by their marital status as maids, wives or widows. If they fell outside these categories they were in danger of being labelled whores or, at worst, witches. While history has left many women voiceless over the centuries, Lucy discovers that in the Restoration a surprising number of women were beginning to question their roles in relationship to their husbands, their position in the home, their attitudes to sex and, most importantly, the expectation to produce children. Meeting a host of experts and experiencing what life was like behind closed doors, Lucy explores whether their lives changed for better or worse during the second half of the 17th century.

At 23:16 & 32:24 you can hear an old Samogitian love song / filme girdisi sena žemaitiška liaudies daina:
Iš Palangos žirgelį pirksiu,
Iš bajorų mergelę vesiu,
Iš bajorų mergelę vesiu
Bagpipe melodies from the film / Filme girdimos Labanoro dūdos melodijos:
0:00 BAGPIPE & FIDDLE FOLK TUNE / Žaisa "Aš negaliu daugiau gerti" iš CD "Ant tėvulio dvaro"
2:09 AUKSTAITIAN (North-East Lithuanian) BAGPIPE TUNE / Aukštaitiška dūdmaišio melodija "DIDYSIS" (Švenčionių r, Šventos apyl.) iš CD "Šoks broliukai šokinį"
16:21 Gilė "Strazde Strazdeli" iš CD "Ant aukštojo kalnelio"
20:22 Keisto folkloro grupė "Ant Kalnų kalnužėlių" iš CD "Dainos įvairios"
42:20 SUDOVIAN BAGPIPE TUNE / Suvalkietiška dūdmaišio melodija "SALDINUKAS" (Vilkaviškio r., Barzdų mstl.) iš CD "Šoks broliukai šokinį"
Šitame įraše masinėse scenose, filmuotose Vilniuje, foninę muziką teko pakeisti Labanoro dūdos melodijomis, nes jų fonui filme buvo panaudoti šiuolaikinių užsienio muzikantų kūriniai ir youtube nebūtų leidę tokio įkėlimo žiūrėti kai kuriose šalyse gyvenantiems žmonėms dėl autorinių teisių įstatymų, - dėl tos pačios priežasties teko išimti ir keletą Kuršių Nerijoje filmuotų Jėzaus gyvenimo epizodų, nes nežinojau kuo ten galima būtų pakeisti muziką. Pilną filmo versiją galite pasižiūrėti LRT mediatekoje, į youtube įkėliau pagrinde tam, kad lietuviškai nesuprantantieji irgi turėtų galimybę pasižiūrėti, kaip atrodė gyvenimas 17a. Vilniuje, su susubtitrais.
