STORYLINE:
US president George W. Bush on Thursday paid his respects to Ronald Reagan at the US Capitol Rotunda where the former president is lying in state.
Bush had returned from the G-8 summit in Sea Island, Georgia.
Bush was accompanied by the US first lady, Laura Bush.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Reagan's toughest opponent, Mikhail Gorbachev, entered to Rotunda to pause before his former political opponent, and friend.
At the US Capitol Rotunda, where the remains of the 40th US President lie in state, up to 5,000 people are passing by the casket each hour.
In the early afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist entered the Rotunda with the new interim Iraqi President, Ghazi al-Yawer.
al-Yawer, fresh from the summit with world leaders in Sea Island, placed a hand to his chest in front of the casket before moving on.
A few minutes later, former Japanese prime minister Yasuhiro Nakasone entered the Rotunda to publicly bid a farewell to his friend.
The Capitol sergeant at arms office, which oversees security in the Capitol, estimated 30,000 people had viewed the casket in the first 10 hours of lying in state in the Rotunda.
World leaders from the 1980s are arriving in Washington to attend Friday's funeral.
At the official White House guest residence, Blair House, where the Reagan family is staying, official guests arrived to give condolences to Nancy Reagan.
At mid afternoon on Thursday, the Reagan children, Ron and his wife, and sister Patti Davis left while Nancy Reagan remained inside.
One of the first to arrive was former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
She was followed by former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.
Following his meeting with Nancy, Mulroney talked with reporters about how the former First Lady is holding up during these hours.
A few minutes after Mulroney left, the former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone arrived to call on Mrs. Reagan.
And then, following his visit to the Rotunda, George W Bush arrived with Laura Bush.

China concerned about Japan's defense budget hike
Asia Jan. 14, 2015 - Updated 06:06 UTC-5
China's Foreign Ministry spokesman has expressed concern over Japan's record high defense spending plan for fiscal 2015.
Japan's Cabinet approved a draft budget for the next fiscal year which includes about 42.5 billion dollars in defense spending.
The defense budget is about 800 million dollars more than the plan this year and the highest ever.
During a news conference on Wednesday, Hong Lei said Japan's policies in the fields of defense and security are a weather vane indicating the country's attitude toward a peaceful developmental path.
He said the policies always attracted strong attention from its Asian neighbors and the international community.
He added that China hopes Japan can learn the lessons of history, follow the path of peaceful development, and work constructively to promote regional peace and stability.
China's state-run Central Television repeatedly included news about Japan's defense spending plan in its broadcasts on Wednesday's afternoon.
N.Korea again calls on US to cancel joint drills
Asia Jan. 13, 2015 - Updated 23:34 UTC-5
North Korea has again urged the United States to cancel its annual joint military drills with South Korea this year in exchange for a temporary suspension of the North's nuclear tests.
North Korea's deputy UN ambassador, An Myong Hun, repeated on Tuesday the message Pyongyang sent to Washington last week. An was holding his first news conference at the UN headquarters since assuming his post.
He suggested the move could improve inter-Korean relations. He said if the US suspends the drills, many things will be possible on the Korean Peninsula this year.
The US has already rejected the proposal put forward by the North last week. An did not elaborate on whether North Korea will go ahead with a nuclear test if the US sticks to its decision.
An also denied the North's involvement in the cyber-attack against Sony Pictures Entertainment. The US government alleges that Pyongyang was behind the hack.
Budget funds economy, defense
Japan Jan. 14, 2015 - Updated 02:24 UTC-5
Here are some of the details of the draft budget.
The government has allocated about 15 billion dollars for economic growth plans and other priority projects.
They include funding for the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development. The agency will be set up in April. It will lead the country's effort in developing cutting-edge medicine.
Some of the funding will support development of technologies for next-generation robots, including artificial intelligence.
It will also finance preparations for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020. That includes developing systems for translating speech in 10 languages.
Defense spending is a record 42 billion dollars.
It includes more than 1.4 billion dollars for a plan to relocate the US Marine Corps Futenma Air Station in Okinawa Prefecture. The base will be moved from the city of Ginowan to Nago City also in Okinawa.
The defense budget also includes about 610 million dollars to buy 5 Osprey transport aircraft and 30 amphibious vehicles. This will strengthen Japan's capability to defend its remote islands.
About 314 million dollars will be used to strengthen security around the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea and the Ogasawara Islands in the Pacific.
Funding is also provided for setting up public relations facilities in London, Los Angeles and Sao Paulo. The facilities will be called "Japan Houses." They will provide information on Japan, including anime and traditional culture.

STORYLINE:
World leaders from the1980s are arriving in Washington to attend Friday's funeral of Ronald Reagan.
Reagan.
At the US Capitol Rotunda, where the remains of the 40th US President lie in state, up to 5,000 people are passing by the casket each hour.
In the early afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist entered the Rotunda with the new interim Iraqi President Ghazi al-Yawer.
al-Yawer, fresh from a summit with world leaders in Sea Island, George, placed a hand to his chest in front of the casket before moving on.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Sunday hailed efforts by Japan's visiting foreign minister to improve relations between the countries, after tension ramped up over the ownership of a disputed chain of islands in the East China Sea.
A diplomatic spat over the islands, which China calls Diaoyutai but are known as Senkaku in Japan, flared last week.
China lodged a complaint on Thursday after the Japanese prime minister reasserted that the uninhabited islets belonged to Tokyo.
The islands are controlled by Japan but are claimed by China and Taiwan.
Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone and his Chinese counterpart on Saturday agreed that their conflicting claims should not undermine their overall relationship, Japanese officials said.
Wen told Nakasone on Sunday that he appreciated the efforts he had made to improve bilateral ties, according to the Xinhua news agency, which did not elaborate.
The two also agreed to arrange a first official visit to China for Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso, who took office in September, according to Japan's Kyodo news agency.
In addition, Nakasone and Wen agreed to pressure North Korea to halt its nuclear ambitions, Kyodo said.
In Saturday's meeting which his counterpart, Nakasone had discussed North Korea and agreed that all parties should continue their efforts toward denuclearisation, Japanese officials said.
China - the North's key ally and main donor - is involved with Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States in now-stalled negotiations with North Korea over its development of nuclear weapons.
North Korea announced earlier this week that it was preparing to launch a satellite into orbit, but the US and South Korea believe the launch may actually be a missile test.
In his meeting with Wen, the Japanese foreign minister also sought closer cooperation on tackling the global financial crisis and a joint gas reserve project.
Nakasone on Saturday said the two countries - which have the world's second and third largest economies - should lead regional initiatives to battle the financial crisis and stimulate trade.
Meanwhile, Xinhua quoted Wen as saying on Saturday that China "must strengthen confidence in the face of the crisis and be ready to take firmer and stronger actions when necessary".
The report did not go into specifics.
