Genres:

Taglines: Beyond the battlefields of Vietnam. Inside the halls of power. A different kind of war would decide the fate of a nation. While one war was being fought in Vietnam another was being fought in the White House.
Quotes:
Senator Everett Dirksen: If this is a defeat, I would hate to see a victory.
Lyndon Baines Johnson: Pack your suitcase, we're goin' to Vietnam.
Dean Rusk, Secretary of State: [Looking at the fighter jet escort next to Air Force One] Are they ours? Dean, Dean!::Dean Rusk, Secretary of State: Are they ours?::Lyndon Baines Johnson: I sure fuckin' hope so.
Lyndon Baines Johnson: Haven't you been paying attention? Hell, they got hundred-year-old women re-supplying them!
Lyndon Baines Johnson: He doesn't have enough sense to pour piss out of a boot.
Lyndon Baines Johnson: How many planes will we lose?::Gen. Earle 'Buzz' Wheeler: 20 to 25.::Lyndon Baines Johnson: How many casualties?::Gen. Earle 'Buzz' Wheeler: 50.::Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense: 50 to 300 is my estimate, and if the bombs miss, it can go as high as 12,000, with fifty percent of these civilians and fifty percent of those killed.::Gen. Earle 'Buzz' Wheeler: Of course, we don't plan these strikes to miss our targets.::Lyndon Baines Johnson: But you do miss sometimes. And this time you could hit a Russian ship. And the bomber pilot will be a kid from Johnson City, Texas, and that'll be the kid that starts World War III, thank you very much.
Lyndon Baines Johnson: They don't need damn trucks! Weren't you watching? They've got hundred-year-old women hauling crap! What do you want me to do, kill everyone's grandmother in that place?
George Ball, Undersecretary of State: Clark, I can't tell you how grateful I am to finally have an ally at the barricades.::Clark Clifford: Well, it's just what makes sense, George. Not to Bob McNamara, but to me. A million men was straight out of your memo of October of last year. An impressively persuasive document, in my opinion.::George Ball, Undersecretary of State: All 67 pages of it? Well, it's true I haven't shown much restraint on the subject. If the President brought you in, it must be because I'm like... an old, broken record now.::Clark Clifford: Then there'll be two of us - scratchy and irritating as hell.
Gen. Earle 'Buzz' Wheeler: The bridge is a major target, and we've never hit it. Chances of civilian deaths will be almost zero.::Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense: I say 100 to 500, possibly more!::Lyndon Baines Johnson: Which is it? 500 or zero?
Walt Rostow: Mr. President, the Stennis committee is up in arms over our holding back on these bombing targets! Bob's testimony is coming up, and it'll take some heat off him if some of these could be cleared up before his appearance.::Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense: I think I can take the heat without padding my resume with more bombing missions.

These weapons have the capability of wiping out most of the Eastern and Southern United States in minutes if they become operational. President John F. Kennedy and his advisors must come up with a plan of action against the Soviets. Kennedy is determined to show that he is strong enough to stand up to the threat, and the Pentagon advises U.S. military strikes against Cuba--which could lead the way to another U.S. invasion of the island. However, Kennedy is reluctant to follow through, because a U.S. invasion could cause the Soviets to retaliate in Europe. A nuclear showdown appears to be almost inevitable. Can it be prevented?

Robert McNamara: This is not a blockade. This is language. A new vocabulary, the likes of which the world has never seen! This is President Kennedy communicating with Secretary Khrushchev!
Kenny O'Donnell: Adlai! It's Ken; how you doin'?::Adlai Stevenson: Busy, Ken. What do you need?::Kenny O'Donnell: The president told me to pass the word to you: Stick it to them!::Adlai Stevenson: I hear you. I'm glad it's you calling; I thought it would be Bobby.::Kenny O'Donnell: Adlai, the world has to know we're right. If we're gonna have a chance at a political solution we need international pressure... You gotta be tough, Adlai. You need to find it, buddy.::Adlai Stevenson: If they're still sticking to their stonewalling stategy, I'll get them. I'm an old political cat, Kenny, but I've got one life left.::Kenny O'Donnell: I know you do.
[about the Joint Chiefs of Staff]::Kenny O'Donnell: They want a war, Jack, and they're arranging things to get one.
General Curtis LeMay: Those goddamn Kennedys are gonna destroy this country if we don't do something about this!
President Kennedy: [slams fist] *I* have the authority! I am the commander in chief of the United States, and I say when we go to war!
Adlai Stevenson: [asking the Russian ambassador if there are any Soviet missile bases in Cuba] Sir, I am prepared to wait for your answer till Hell freezes over, if that's your decision.

Richard Nixon Lyndon Johnson Phone Call November 8 1968
After the election, the two men speak in a phone call on the evening of November 8. The main point of interest here is that Johnson explicitly brings up the fact that people on Nixon's team (he does not accuse Nixon himself) had a backchannel to sabotage the Paris Peace Talks. "Now, that's the story, Dick. And it is a sordid story," says Johnson to Nixon. "Now, I don't want to say that to the coun

LBJ Orders Pants
A special presentation from Put This On.
In 1964, Lyndon Johnson needed pants, so he called the Haggar clothing company and asked for some. The call was recorded (like all White House calls at the time), and has since become the stuff of legend. Johnson's anatomically specific directions to Mr. Haggar are some of the most intimate words we've ever heard from the mouth of a President.

The Robert F. Kennedy presidential campaign began on March 16, 1968. Robert Francis Kennedy, a U.S. Senator from New York who won a Senate seat in 1964, faced what was widely considered an unrealistic race against an incumbent, President Lyndon B. Johnson. After Johnson's announcement on March 31 that he would not seek re-election, Kennedy still faced Johnson’s leading challenger, Eugene McCarthy, a U.S. Senator from Minnesota, and Vice President Hubert Humphrey, who entered the race following Johnson’s withdrawal, for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Kennedy and McCarthy remained the main challengers to Humphrey and the policies of the Johnson administration. Throughout the spring and summer, Kennedy campaigned in presidential primary elections, especially those in Indiana, Nebraska, Oregon, South Dakota, California, and Washington, D.C. He had made progress in achieving Democratic support for the nomination until his assassination on June 5, 1968, in Los Angeles, California.
Kennedy was a late entry in the race for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 1968. By late 1967 Kennedy had not made a decision, even under pressure from his political advisors who feared time to announce a candidacy was running out.[1] Kennedy and his advisors knew it would not be easy to beat the incumbent president Lyndon Johnson.[2] However, Kennedy hadn’t ruled out entering the race. Following U.S. Senator Eugene McCarthy’s announcement on November 30, 1967, of his intention to run against Johnson for the Democratic nomination, Kennedy remarked to U.S. Senator George McGovern of South Dakota, “I’m worried about you and other people making early commitment to him because it may be hard for all of us later on.”[3] At a breakfast with reporters at the National Press Club on January 30, 1968, Kennedy still indicated that he had no plans to run, but a few weeks later he had changed his mind about entering the race.[4]
After the Tet Offensive in Vietnam, in early February 1968, Kennedy received a letter from writer Pete Hamill (later acclaimed author of the novel Snow in August). Hamill wrote an anguished letter to Kennedy noting that poor people in the Watts area of Los Angeles hung pictures of his brother, President John F. Kennedy, in their homes and that Robert Kennedy had the "obligation of staying true to whatever it was that put those pictures on those walls."[5] Other factors led Kennedy into the presidential race as well. On February 29, 1968, the Kerner Commission’s report on racial unrest in American cities during the previous summer blamed “white racism” for the violence, but its findings were largely dismissed by the Johnson administration.[5] Concerned about the president’s policies and actions, Kennedy remarked to his advisor, historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., “How can we possibly survive five more years of Lyndon Johnson?”[2] To complicate his decision, Kennedy’s friends, political advisors, and family members disagreed on whether he should run. While his wife Ethel supported the idea, Kennedy’s brother, Ted, initially opposed, but offered his support when the decision was finally made to enter the race.[2][6]
By late February or early March, 1968, Kennedy had made the decision to enter the race for president.[3] On March 10, Kennedy traveled to California, to meet with civil rights activist César Chávez, who was ending a 25-day hunger strike.[7] En route to California, Kennedy told his aide, Peter Edelman, that he had decided to run, “now I have to figure out how to get McCarthy out of it.”[3] The weekend before the New Hampshire primary, Kennedy announced to several aides that he would run if he could persuade little-known Senator Eugene McCarthy of Minnesota to withdraw from the presidential race.[8] Kennedy agreed to McCarthy’s request to delay an announcement of his intentions until after the New Hampshire primary.[3] On March 12, after Johnson won an astonishingly narrow victory in the New Hampshire primary against McCarthy, who polled 42 percent of the vote, Kennedy knew it would be unlikely that the Minnesota senator would agree to withdraw and moved forward with his plans.

His supposed doubts about international connections opens the door for Uncle Walter to question the conclusions of the WC. LBJ tries to close it again at 0:55. But Cronkite walks right in and LBJ fumbles big time as he realizes what a hole he has dug himself. He starts to address the WC conclusions, but then launches into a defense of the Commission's integrity instead, realizing that he can only make things worse by talking specifics. At 1:25 a wonderful subtle snarl stirs the left corner of his mouth as he regrets letting Uncle Walter into the ranch. Then his obfuscating generalities hit the name "Oswald," and he pauses, realizing that he did not want to speak that name and closes his eyes in despair, before continuing to the ultimate flub, "others that could have been involved." This is the former President of the United States here, not some schlub who just read a Mark Lane book, and he's talking about the motivations of Oswald and others who might have been involved, to Walter Fucking Cronkite. What can he do now, but ask Cronkite not to broadcast this unbelievable answer? And our kindly Uncle Walter obliges.
It seems weird that LBJ would bring up "international connections" 6 years later, but this is part of the original cover story. There had to be an implication of international connections in order to convince Earl Warren and others that confirming the lone gunman theory was necessary to avoiding the possibility of WW3. "Oswald Done It Himself," avoids Cuban and Soviet involvement. The conspirators provided just enough false implication of international connections to create a reason for relatively honest men to join the cover up.
Ruby's Warren Commission testimony is sometimes quoted out of context. There, he wants to talk to Lyndon Johnson, he says, to convince him that he was not involved with the Kennedy assassination plot. Perhaps the key point is that he wants to talk to Lyndon Johnson. He has just been sentenced to death for killing Oswald, and he had probably been promised to get off lightly, the way Mac Wallace had got away with murder. Later, he blames "the man in office now," and he never sounds more sane than when he says that. The Weissman ad was probably planted just to give him a reason to shoot Oswald. Why did he wake up George Senator in the middle of the night to go look at a billboard and go to the post office? Because Senator would make a good corroborating witness to his motivations. But, when Johnson didn't come through for him, he pointed the finger of blame.
It is interesting to note how close Ruby kept to Senator. In November 1962, Senator moved into a new apartment, and, according to Senator's testimony to the Warren Commission, within a week Ruby moved into the next door apartment. The adjoining apartment. They shared a wall. One year before the assassination Ruby moved in next door to his future character witness. This apartment was less than a mile away from Oswald's famous "backyard," and about 4 blocks from where Tippit would die. And this was about the same time that George de Mohrenschildt was getting to know his new friend Lee ("I think in the summer of 1962"), and about the same time that Michael Paine moved out of his house ("Michael moved to an apartment in September of 1962"). The scene was being set a year in advance.
That's Janet "Jada" Conforto, at this time, a former dancer in Ruby's club. She also mentioned in the video that she thought that Jack particularly didn't like Bobby Kennedy, which isn't surprising given the fact that Jack had gangster friends. It is also priceless how she looks at the interviewer when he suddenly starts talking as if she is not there. You'll find the interview is on YouTube somewhere, if you search for it. She died in the 70's riding her motorcycle when she was hit by a bus.
Jada, here, says that she doesn't think Ruby loved Kennedy that much. In part of this interview not shown here, she emphasizes how he disliked Bobby. I just yesterday saw another interview with another dancer who related how upset Ruby was with the assassination of his "beloved" president. This seems to be a contradiction, but when you realize that Jada had left the Carousel Club long before the assassination and that the other dancer was working there at the time of the assassination, then it makes sense. Ruby didn't like the Kennedys, but he was putting on to explain the motive for what he was about to do, to kill Oswald. Ruby was pretending to be upset that JFK had been murdered. He really didn't like the Kennedys.

"Now, I don't want to say that to the country because that's not good." Another crucial detail has to do with the allegation that Johnson's bombing halt, which lay the ground for the peace talks, was a political maneuver to elect Democrat Hubert Humphrey; even after the election, Johnson still wants to bring about the peace talks, and he wants Nixon's help to do so. The urgent issue for Johnson is the unending loss of American soldiers overseas: "They're killing Americans everyday." This video is a supplement to a long piece on Richard Nixon's successful attempt to sabotage the Paris Peace Talks: http://italkyoubored.wordpress.com/2014/04/08/the-treason-of-richard-nixon-from-possibility-to-certainty/

Growing up in the beautiful but rugged Texas Hill Country helped form the man and the politician Lyndon Johnson would become. He learned about hard economic times, the value of education, and got his first taste of politics. In this biographical video, you will learn about the Johnson family, the political journey of LBJ, and his whirlwind romance with Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Taylor.
As President, LBJ championed education, civil rights, the environment, the space program, and social programs -- all while grappling with an escalating war in Vietnam. In 1968, LBJ decided not to run for re-election, retiring to Texas. Lyndon Johnson died in 1973, two years after the opening of the LBJ Library.

We at Put This On took the historic original audio and gave it to animator Tawd Dorenfeld, who created this majestic fantasia of bungholiana.
Enjoy this special treat from Put This On: LBJ Orders Pants. Then share it with a friend who loves pants.

How Did LBJ Make His Money? The Disturbing Story of His Political Rise and Corruption (1990)

In 1937, Johnson successfully contested a special election for Texas's 10th congressional district, that covered Austin and the surrounding hill country. He ran on a New Deal platform and was effectively aided by his wife. He served in the House from April 10, 1937, to January 3, 1949.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt found Johnson to be a welcome ally and conduit for information, particularly with regard to issues concerning internal politics in Texas (Operation Texas) and the machinations of Vice President John Nance Garner and Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn. Johnson was immediately appointed to the Naval Affairs Committee. He worked for rural electrification and other improvements for his district. Johnson steered the projects towards contractors that he personally knew, such as the Brown Brothers, Herman and George, who would finance much of Johnson's future career. In 1941, he ran for the U.S. Senate in a special election against the sitting Governor of Texas, radio personality W. Lee "Pappy" O'Daniel. Johnson lost the election.
In the 1948 elections, Johnson again ran for the Senate and won. This election was highly controversial: in a three-way Democratic Party primary Johnson faced a well-known former governor, Coke Stevenson, and a third candidate. Johnson drew crowds to fairgrounds with his rented helicopter dubbed "The Johnson City Windmill". He raised money to flood the state with campaign circulars and won over conservatives by voting for the Taft-Hartley act (curbing union power) as well as by criticizing unions.
Stevenson came in first but lacked a majority, so a runoff was held. Johnson campaigned even harder this time around, while Stevenson's efforts were surprisingly poor. The runoff count took a week. The Democratic State Central Committee (not the State of Texas, because the matter was a party primary) handled the count, and it finally announced that Johnson had won by 87 votes. By a majority of one member (29--28) the committee voted to certify Johnson's nomination, with the last vote cast on Johnson's behalf by Temple, Texas, publisher Frank W. Mayborn, who rushed back to Texas from a business trip in Nashville, Tennessee. There were many allegations of fraud on both sides. Thus one writer alleges that Johnson's campaign manager, future Texas governor John B. Connally, was connected with 202 ballots in Precinct 13 in Jim Wells County that had curiously been cast in alphabetical order and just at the close of polling. Some of these voters swore that they had not voted that day.[22] Robert Caro argued in his 1989 book that Johnson had stolen the election in Jim Wells County and other counties in South Texas, as well as rigging 10,000 ballots in Bexar County alone.[23] An election judge, Luis Salas, said in 1977, that he had certified 202 fraudulent ballots for Johnson.[24]
The state Democratic convention upheld Johnson. Stevenson went to court, but—with timely help from his friend Abe Fortas—Johnson prevailed. Johnson was elected senator in November and went to Washington tagged with the ironic label "Landslide Lyndon," which he often used deprecatingly to refer to himself.

On Sept. 29, 1965, in a Rose Garden ceremony surrounded by artists and lawmakers, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act of 1965. The act called for the creation of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as separate, independent agencies.
On Monday, Dec. 7, 2015, we celebrated the 50th anniversaries of each agency with their chairs, Jane Chu and William Adams. The night included a conversation with LBJ Library Director Mark Updegrove.
The special evening was hosted in partnership with the College of Fine Arts, College of Liberal Arts, LBJ School of Public Affairs, Humanities Texas, Texas Cultural Trust, Texas Commission on the Arts, Humanities Institute, Harry Ransom Center, Blanton Museum of Art, Briscoe Center for American History, and Bob Bullock Museum.

Please join us as we celebrate the publication of a new edition of The Triumph and Tragedy of Lyndon Johnson: The White House Years, a personal memoir of by one of President Johnson’s closest advisers, the man The New York Times called “Deputy President for Domestic Affairs,” Joseph A. Califano, Jr.
Califano takes us into the Oval Office as the decisions that irrevocably changed the country were being crafted to create Johnson’s ambitious Great Society. He shows us LBJ’s commitment to economic and social revolution, and his willingness to do whatever it took to achieve his goals. Widely acclaimed, The Triumph and Tragedy of Lyndon Johnson is a no-holds-barred account and an intimate portrait of a president of towering ambition at work. In an expansive new introduction, Califano examines the extent to which LBJ’s Great Society touches every American and fuels the nation’s public policy debate to this day.
In conversation with Dr. Jonathan Fanton, former interim director of Roosevelt House, Mr. Califano will address why LBJ is regarded as “a president who knew how to make Washington work – even among those who didn’t like how he made it work and what he made it work on.”
