The Hindu Kush (/kʊʃ, kuːʃ/; Pashto, Persian and Urdu: هندوکش), also known in Ancient Greek as the Caucasus Indicus (Ancient Greek: Καύκασος Ινδικός) or Paropamisadae (Ancient Greek: Παροπαμισάδαι), is an 800-kilometre-long (500 mi) mountain range that stretches between central Afghanistan and northern Pakistan. It forms the western section of the Hindu Kush Himalayan Region (HKH). It divides the valley of the Amu Darya (the ancient Oxus) to the north from the Indus River valley to the south.
The highest point in the Hindu Kush is Tirich Mir or Terichmir at 7,708 metres (25,289 ft) in the Chitral District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. To the east, the Hindu Kush buttresses the Pamir Mountains near the point where the borders of China, Pakistan and Afghanistan meet, after which it runs southwest through Pakistan and into Afghanistan, finally merging into minor ranges in central Afghanistan like the Koh-i Baba. The mountain range separates Central Asia from South Asia.

n 335 BC Alexander of Macedonia set off on an expedition to conqueror the world. The voyage of Alexander the Great covered more than 22;000 miles in ten years; from Greece to India and back; through some of the most difficult and unforgiving terrain. In 1996; more than 2000 years later; Michael Wood was hot on his trail; following; as closely as possible; in the footsteps of Alexander and the army that he drove to achieve the impossible. He did have the advantages of modern transport. Up to a point. Travelling by jeep; bus; truck; train; retired Russian ambulance and occasional lifts in helicopters; he discovered that some parts of the world are still completely inaccessible to anything but the feet of camels; mules; horses or occasionally humans.Leaving countless baffled border checkpoint ...

Why are the Kalash called the white tribe of Pakistan? I came up with BeKeSe (Best Kept Secrets) to draw everyone’s attention to lesser-known wonderful things other people have created over the years, whether it is a building, clothing, a legend, a tradition, a village, or an entire country. BeKeSe is not just about traveling to see something, but to feel the creative energy, even from your couch. I chose the ones I absolutely love. Many of them are places of mystery, secrecy, magic, legends, and allure. While the videos are edited by me only some of the photographs are taken by me. I am grateful to the others that have contributed. I would love your feedback, suggestions and artistic contribution to help BeKeSe grow. I hope you enjoy, like, and share the videos. Once a vital piece of the hippy trail, well disposed, wonderful Afghanistan has unfortunately been crushed by years of war and disregard. Home to ample farmland and the rough Hindu Kush mountain range, explorers desired the acceptable mountain air and to see attractions like the monster Buddha statues of Bamiyan. Then again, the statues and numerous different landmarks were wrecked under the cataclysmic rule of the Taliban, a gathering of Islamic aggressors. - See more at: http://www.helpskhmers.com/afghanistan-travel-guide/#sthash.3QZhOt6c.dpuf Afghanistan Travel Guide, World Travel Guides, SCC Education Kampong Thom Cambodia,

Mountains worldwide are the water tower that provides food, energy and ecosystem services to billions of people living downstream. For instance, the Hindu Kush Himalayas (HKH) provides these services to 1.3 billion people. However, climate change coupled with socio-economic changes have put unprecedented pressure on these water resources. We want to highlight the role of mountains in providing water, food and energy for sustainable growth using examples from the Himalayas.
Not only are you looking at an international border, it's also the meeting point of 2 great mountain ranges, ie, the Pamir and the Hindu Kush. Taken on Wednesday 17/August/2016.
We know very little about glaciers in the high mountains. We know they’re shrinking and temperatures are rising faster at higher altitudes than anywhere else on the planet. But, due to extreme conditions and inaccessibility, we have much to learn. Detailed field measurements are being made on just twelve out of some 54,000 glaciers in the Himalayas. More measurements are needed because these glaciers feed the rivers people living down below rely on. Himalayas | Asia's Great Mountain System Home to Mt. Many Himalayan peaks are sacred in both Buddhism and Hinduism. The Himalayas are bordered on the north by the Tibetan Plateau, on the south by the Indo-Gangetic Plain, on the northwest by the Karakoram and Hindu Kush ranges, and on the ...
From Afghanistan we usually see shocking news about attacks and terrorists, army troops and their missions. However in this inhospitable country people live their regular lives, get married, have children, and like everyone they have dreams and desires. We come from two parts of the world, we are members of various cultures, we have different religious faiths. We are divided by a distance which leaves us unrecognizable to each other. Slovaks have become part of the war in Afghanistan in such a way that we have sent there our soldiers and we stand on the side of those that are convinced about its rightness and necessity. As long as our troops are here, they will always perceive us as invaders, however good our intentions may be... Anton Szomolányi (*1963 Bratislava, SR) and Lukáš Rogans...
A classic 1989 segment of National Geographic Explorer in which G. Whitney Azoy, a Pulitzer Prize nominated scholar, author and expert on the culture and politics of Afghanistan, treks deep into Afghanistan in search of a lapis mine. The caravan goes on foot -- step by brutal step -- from Pakistan through what is now a no-man's land of Nuristan and into the Hindu Kush. Magnificent camera work under overwhelmingly difficult conditions.

Swat (Pashto: سوات ) is a valley and an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan. It is the upper valley of the Swat River, which rises in the Hindu Kush range. The capital of Swat is Saidu Sharif, but the main town in the Swat valley is Mingora. It was a princely state (see The Yusafzai State of Swat) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until it was dissolved in 1969 along with many other princely states like Dir state and Chitral state. The valley is populated mostly by ethnic Pashtuns and Gujjar and Kohistani communities. The languages spoken in the valley are Pashto , Gojri, Torwali and Kohistani. Most non-Pashtoon people of the area are bilingual and fluent in Pashto along with their native languages. Throughout the district, there is a less tendency of ethnic discrim...
