Shevardnadze's political career started in the late 1940s as a leading member of his local Komsomol organisation. He was later appointed its Second Secretary, and even First Secretary. His rise up the Georgian Soviet hierarchy continued until 1961 when he was demoted after he insulted a senior official. After spending two years in obscurity, Shevardnadze's returned as a First Secretary of a Tbilisi city district, and was able to charge the Tbilisi First Secretary at the time for corruption. His anti-corruption work quickly garnered the interest of the Soviet government, and Shevardnadze was appointed to First Deputy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Georgian SSR. He would later become the head of the internal affairs ministry and was able to charge First Secretary (leader of Soviet Georgia) Vasil Mzhavanadze for corruption charges.
Born in Tampico, Illinois and raised in Dixon, Reagan was educated at Eureka College, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and sociology. After his graduation, Reagan moved first to Iowa to work as a radio broadcaster and then in to Los Angeles in 1937 where he began a career as an actor, first in films and later television. Some of his most notable films include Knute Rockne, All American, Kings Row, and Bedtime for Bonzo. Reagan served as president of the Screen Actors Guild, and later as a spokesman for General Electric (GE); his start in politics occurred during his work for GE. Originally a member of the Democratic Party, his positions began shifting rightward in the late 1950s, and he switched to the Republican Party in 1962. After delivering a rousing speech in support of Barry Goldwater's presidential candidacy in 1964, he was persuaded to seek the California governorship, winning two years later and again in 1970. He was defeated in his run for the Republican presidential nomination in 1968 as well as 1976, but won both the nomination and general election in 1980, defeating incumbent Jimmy Carter.

He is a former Formula One racing driver now living and working in Spain as a representative of the car manufacturer, Fiat.
He does not speak a word of Georgian but has said that if the opportunity arose, he would be willing to abandon his Malaga apartment to take the throne in the impoverished Caucasus republic.
Bagrationi was thrown into jail in 1930 by the Soviets but, with the help of the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky, he managed to escape to France where he joined other aristocratic exiles from Communist Europe.
He was a descendant of Georgia's last king, Georgi XII who reigned until 1801 when the nation was subsumed by the Russian empire.
The Church of the Life Giving Pillar is Georgia's holiest and the resting place of many other rulers.

Eduard Shevardnadze, the former Soviet Foreign Minister best known for helping to carry out Mikhail Gorbachev's perestroika reforms, has been trying to restore stability to Georgia. The Caucasus republic is being torn apart by rising crime and a separatist rebellion.
As he addressed the emotional rally - surrounded by anxious security men Shevardnadze still showed the cuts he sustained in the assassination attempt.
But having survived it, he's now vowed to track down those responsible.

Ten people suspected of involvement in the Tuesday evening car bombing have been arrested.
At Wednesday's rally, Shevardnadze also confirmed that he'd run in elections for the newly created post of President in the autumn.

GEORGIA: PRESIDENT SHEVARDNADZE EXPECTED TO WIN ELECTION
Russian/Eng/Nat
Politicians are wrapping up their presidential campaign in the former Soviet republic of Georgia.
President Eduard Shevardnadze is expected to beat main opponent Dzhumber Paatiashvili in Sunday's poll.
In an exclusive interview, the Georgian leader has told APTV that the future of his country depends on him.
For a country which has suffered four years of civil war and economic hardship, Georgia has an untroubled air on the eve of its first Presidential elections.
The streets of the capital, Tbilisi, are plastered with campaign posters for the various candidates but for many Georgians, there's only one man capable of saving the country: Eduard Shevardnadze.
In his final campaign rally before Sunday's poll, Shevardnadze told a packed hall in the capital that he is the only man who can guide the country its current crisis.
Three years ago there was anarchy. He blames the horrendous economic situation on criminal gangs.
Surrounded by heavy security following attempts on his life, Shevardnadze said that although the situation is slowly improving the next few years would be crucial to Georgia's future.
SOUNDBITE (Russian):
"The next four of five years will decide the fate of the country. The rebuilding of the country, of the economy, escaping the crisis which we're in, restoring good order under which people can live ."

The former Soviet foreign minister is expected to become Georgia's first elected president Sunday, drawing support from all sections of Georgian society.
SOUNDBITE (English):
"He's the only one who can take Georgia out of this terrible situation. We don't have any other person who is better than him."
SUPERCAPTION: Givi, student
However, the spectre of Georgia's most infamous son Stalin is never far away. Stalin Party members have been driving an armoured car adorned with their hero's portrait around the capital.
And Georgia's opposition politicians allege that Shevardnadze has brought ruin to the country in the same way Stalin brought ruin to the Soviet Union.
SOUNDBITE (English):
"We don't like his policy of unconditional surrender to Russia which has many results-- many tragic results. Including famine, disorder, letting loose gangs and so on and so on."
SUPERCAPTION: Notar Notadze, leader Republican Party
In spite of his statements supporting his commitment to democracy, Shevardnadze appears to have little patience for opposition demonstrations.
His officers are accused of sending masked police to break up groups of people outside the parliament building Friday morning.
It's actions like these that are causing Western electoral observers arriving in Georgia some concern.
SOUNDBITE (English:
"The policemen in Germany, in America in other countries, they have to do their work, can do their work smoothly, but not so strongly. And they must not be mummies."
SUPERCAPTION: Hans Breml, OSCE observer
Winding up his campaign for election to the presidency, Eduard Shevardnadze reminded his supporters that he is their only chance for stability and that it is his destiny to rule.
SOUNDBITE (Russian):
"There are people in this country who want to hinder the process of democracy I don't have the right to get out of politics. My country still needs me."
SUPERCAPTION: Eduard Shevardnadze, Georgian leader
While many Georgians labour in their Caucasian nation to make ends meet, they are likely to vote in large numbers for Shevardnadze.
Opposition parties may be more successful in the parliamentary elections also underway on Sunday.

STORYLINE:
Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze fired his entire Cabinet on Thursday, officials said, as a security scandal erupted into a full-fledged political crisis.
Zurab Zhvania, the parliamentary speaker, said that Shevardnadze's representative in parliament had informed him that "the president has made a decision to oust the entire Cabinet."
Shevardnadze's government has been under pressure from many quarters, including the country's separatist region of Abkhazia as well as Russia, which has repeatedly accused Georgia of providing refuge to rebels fighting Russian troops in Russia's breakaway Chechnya region.
Georgia is the only foreign country that borders on the violence-wracked region.
While Shevardnadze rose to power in the Soviet era on pledges to curb corruption and has pledged to continue the campaign today, he has managed to do very little.
Many among the thousands of demonstrators who gathered outside the parliament on Thursday blamed Shevardnadze for the burgeoning corruption and poverty.
The immediate cause of the Cabinet's ouster was the security service's attempted raid on the independent Rustavi 2 television station earlier this week on suspicion of tax evasion.
The failed raid brought about protests that the state was trying to silence critical media and demands for top security officials to step down.
Security Minister Vakhtang Kutateladze handed in his resignation Wednesday, but parliamentary members said that was not enough.
They also demanded the resignation of Interior Minister Kakha Targamadze and Prosecutor General Georgy Meparishvili, and some called for the entire government to step down - sparking protests among their opponents that they were trying to engineer a state coup.

Georgia's Interior Minister announced on Monday (18/9) that the
extremist group which tried to assassinate President Eduard
Shevardnadze on August 29 had been broken up. Shota Kviraya, said
that the two men behind the assassination plot had been arrested
and charged. They are Temur Khachiashvili, the deputy head of the
Georgian KGB and Giga Gelashvili, a high-ranking officer of the
"Mkhedrioni" or Horsemen - a militarist group that was
instrumental in bringing Shevardnadze to power but now violently
opposes his regime. The men were charged with masterminding the
assassination attempt and with the murders of three of
Shevardnadze's associates - a deputy interior minister, a popular
opposition leader and a friend of Shevardnadze's who headed a
political fund.
