Opera House, Wellington

The Opera House is a proscenium theatre in Wellington, New Zealand, located on Manners Street opposite Te Aro Park.

History

Construction work on the building, originally known as the "Grand Opera House", began in 1911. William Pitt, the architect, was based in Melbourne, Australia, and much of the work was overseen by local architect Albert Liddy. It is a brick building, with wooden floors. The Opera House has three levels: stalls, circle and grand circle. It has fine moldings and an ornate dome. On either side of the proscenium arch are two boxes – arranged on top of each other.

In 1977, it was restored by the State Insurance company, and for many years it was known as the State Opera House. Today, it is simply called "The Opera House".

In recent years, The Opera House was operated by the same Trust which ran the nearby St James Theatre.

The Opera House was used for the theatre scenes in Peter Jackson's 2005 film King Kong.

In July 2011 Positively Wellington Venues, an integration between the Wellington Convention Centre and the St James Theatre Trust, began managing this theatre along with five other venues in the capital city.

Opera House (horse)

Opera House (foaled February 24, 1988) is a retired British thoroughbred racehorse and active sire. In a racing career which lasted from October 1990 until November 1993 he ran eighteen times and won eight races. Opera House was best known for his performances as a five-year-old in 1993, when he won three Group One races, including the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and was named European Champion Older Horse. He was retired to stud in Japan where his progeny including T M Opera O.

Background

Opera House, a bay horse with a white star, was bred by the Meon Valley Stud in Hampshire. He was sired by Sadler's Wells, out of Colorspin, a daughter of High Top. Sadler's Wells (1981-2001) won three Group One races in 1984 and went on to sire the winners of over 2,000 races including more than 130 at Group One/Grade I level. He was the most successful sire in the history of British racing being the leading Leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland a record fourteen times. Colorspin won the Irish Oaks and was a half-sister of the Prix de l'Opera winner Bella Colora and the Irish Champion Stakes winner Cezanne. Apart from Opera House, she also produced his full brother, the champion stayer Kayf Tara and the Prix de l'Opera winner Zee Zee Top.

La Scala

La Scala (pronounced [la ˈskaːla]; abbreviation in Italian language for the official name Teatro alla Scala [teˈaːtro alla ˈskaːla]) is an opera house in Milan, Italy. The theatre was inaugurated on 3 August 1778 and was originally known as the New Royal-Ducal Theatre alla Scala (Nuovo Regio Ducale Teatro alla Scala). The premiere performance was Antonio Salieri's Europa riconosciuta.

Most of Italy's greatest operatic artists, and many of the finest singers from around the world, have appeared at La Scala during the past 200 years. The theatre is regarded as one of the leading opera and ballet theatres in the world and is home to the La Scala Theatre Chorus, La Scala Theatre Ballet and La Scala Theatre Orchestra. The theatre also has an associate school, known as the La Scala Theatre Academy (Italian: Accademia Teatro alla Scala), which offers professional training in music, dance, stage craft and stage management.

Overview

La Scala's season traditionally opens on 7 December, Saint Ambrose's Day, the feast day of Milan's patron saint. All performances must end before midnight, and long operas start earlier in the evening when necessary.

Gaetana

Gaetana is the debut album by Italian pop singer Giusy Ferreri, it was released on November 14, 2008 in Italy, and digitally in many other European countries. Four singles were released from the album: "Non ti scordar mai di me", "Novembre", "Stai fermo lì" and "La scala (The Ladder)". Gaetana has sold around 500,000 copies only in Italy being certified 6 times platinum and around 600.000 copies worldwide.

Promotion and release

The album was heavily promoted, and special advertising was arranged in collaboration with MTV Italy before and during the week of release. The entire album was streamed on MTV's website, beginning on November 10, 2008, a week before the album's Italian release date. Gaetana reached at #1 on iTunes Italy on the first day of release and debuted on the Italian FIMI albums chart at number two where it went on to peak for seven weeks, fended off by Laura Pausini's album Primavera in anticipo.

In 2009 Gaetana was released in France, Belgium, Spain, Germany and Greece.

Italy (ⁱ/ˈɪtəli/; Italian: Italia [iˈtaːlja]), officially the Italian Republic (Italian: Repubblica Italiana), is a unitary parliamentary republic in Europe. Italy covers an area of 301,338 km² (116,347 sq mi) and has a largely Mediterranean and temperate climate; due to its shape, it is often referred to in Italy as lo Stivale (the Boot). With 61 million inhabitants, it is the 4th most populous EU member state. Located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Italy shares open land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, San Marino and Vatican City.

Since ancient times, Greeks, Etruscans and Celts have inhabited the south, centre and north of the Italian Peninsula respectively. Rome ultimately emerged as the dominant power, conquering much of the ancient world and becoming the leading cultural, political, and religious centre of Western civilisation. The legacy of the Roman Empire is widespread and can be observed in the global distribution of civilian law, Republican governments, Christianity and the latin script.

Roman Italy

Roman Italy was created officially by the Roman Emperor Augustus with the Latin name Italia. It was the first time in history that the Italian peninsula (from the Alps to the Ionian Sea) was united under the same name. In the year 292, the three islands of Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily were added to Roman Italy by Emperor Diocletianus.

Characteristics

Italy (Italia in Latin and Italian) was the name of the administrative division of the Italian peninsula during the Roman era. It was not a province, but became the territory of the city of Rome, thus having a special status. Following the end of the Social War (91–88 BC), Rome had allowed its Italian allies (socii) full rights in Roman society and granted the Roman citizenship to all the Italic peoples.

After having been for centuries the heart of the Empire, from the 3rd century the government and the cultural center began to move eastward: first the Edict of Caracalla in 212 AD extended Roman citizenship to all free men within the imperial boundaries, then during Constantine's reign (306–337) the seat of the Empire was moved to Constantinople in 330 AD.
