Data is obtained from NOAA Satellite and Information Service in cooperation with Unidata. Precipitation data is obtained from NASA's Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite. Images are updated every 30 minutes. 1-Day precipitation observation data is obtained from Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service.

Numerical weather models are constantly evolving overtime. They are used to help meteorologist predict weather patterns and/or events so they can issue forecast to the public. While the models are wonderful tools to use, they also contain numerical errors that will cause forecast to be rather inaccurate after a certain amount of days (usually 3 to 5 days). Various climate variables are analyzed to see the anomalies (difference from average) across the United States. As of now, the anomalies are based on the Climate Forecasting System Reanalysis (CFSR) monthly means between 1982 and 2010 with a spatial resolution of 1 degree.
