On the first day of his controversial visit to Germany, Egyptian president Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi has been verbally attacked by a journalist. This, during a news conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The journalist began shouting and pointing at the leaders after she was not allowed to ask a question. She also called Sisi Quote a murderer before being forced out of the room by security guards. During the presser, Sisi defended the death sentence handed to his predecessor Mohamed Morsi last month. The German Chancellor said the countries had differences of opinion in some areas including the issues of human rights abuses and the death penalty. Sisi’s visit to Germany sparked rival demonstrations in Berlin on Wednesday with those opposed to Sisi’s rule accusing him of numerous human rights violations.

On 6 October 1981, the month after the crackdown, Sadat was assassinated during the annual victory parade in Cairo. A fatwā approving the assassination had been obtained from Omar Abdel-Rahman, a cleric later convicted in the U.S. for his role in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Sadat was protected by four layers of security and the army parade should have been safe due to ammunition-seizure rules. However, the officers in charge of that procedure were on hajj to Mecca.
As air force Mirage jets flew overhead, distracting the crowd, a troop truck halted before the presidential reviewing stand, and a lieutenant strode forward. Sadat stood to receive his salute, whereupon the assassins rose from the truck, throwing grenades and firing assault rifle rounds. The attack lasted about two minutes. Photographer Bill Foley captured one of the last shots of a living Sadat. The photograph is titled "The Last Smile." The lead assassin Khalid Islambouli shouted "Death to Pharaoh!" as he ran towards the stand and shot Sadat. After he fell to the floor people around Sadat threw chairs on his body to try to protect him from the bullets. Eleven others were killed, including the Cuban ambassador a Omani general and a Coptic Orthodox bishop, and 28 were wounded, including James Tully, the Irish Minister for Defence, and four U.S. military liaison officers. Sadat was then rushed to a hospital, but was declared dead within hours. This was the first time in Egyptian history that the head of state had been assassinated by an Egyptian citizen. Two of the attackers were killed and the others were arrested by military police on-site. Islambouli was later found guilty and was executed in April 1982.
In conjunction with the assassination, an insurrection was organized in Asyut in Upper Egypt. Rebels took control of the city for a few days and 68 policemen and soldiers were killed in the fighting. Government control was not restored until paratroopers from Cairo arrived. Most of the militants convicted of fighting received light sentences and served only three years in prison.

Egyptian citizens abroad started to vote in the country’s first parliamentary election since the 2013 coup d’etat against the country’s democratically elected President, Mohamed Morsi.
Middle East News Agency reported on Saturday that ballot boxes will remain open for two days at embassies and consulates in 139 countries.
It is expected that 700,000 registered citizens, who currently live abroad will vote in the parliamentary election.
The voting inside Egypt includes two rounds which will be held on Oct 18-19 and Nov 22-23.
Egyptian authorities tighten security measures for the upcoming election, as at least 185,000 military troops have been employed to provide security in the first round of the election.
Interior Ministry spokesman, Abu Bakr Abdel Karim said that 180,000 police officials will also join the security forces as an additional effort.
President Abdel Fattah Sisi on Saturday invited all Egyptian citizens to vote in a televised speech.
"Line up in front of polling stations and plant with your votes the hope for a bright tomorrow for our new Egypt," said Sisi during his speech.
In 2012, Egyptian parliament had been dismissed by a court ruling, stating that it had been elected on faulty rules.
The next legislature is regarded as a transition to democracy, however the critics say the parliament is likely to be a rubber-stamp body that further solidifies the power of Sisi.

A court in Egypt has ordered the release of the two sons of ousted president Hosni Mubarak who had been sentenced to three years in jail for corruption.
The Cairo criminal court called for the release of Alaa and Gamal Mubarak after taking into account the time they spent in prison. Back in May, a court in Cairo sentenced Mubarak and his sons to three years in prison each in a corruption case dubbed the "presidential palaces affairs" by the Egyptian media. The two were first detained in April 2011, two months after their father stepped down during Egypt's revolution. Mubarak's sons are still facing charges in two separate cases, involving insider trading and illicit gains. But they won't be held in custody while awaiting trial.

A dramatic, illuminating day-by-day account of the 1978 Camp David conference, when President Jimmy Carter convinced Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat to sign a peace treaty--the first treaty in the modern Middle East, and one which endures to this day. With his hallmark insight into the forces at play in the Middle East and his acclaimed journalistic skill, Lawrence Wright takes us through each of the thirteen days of the Camp David conference, delving deeply into the issues and enmities between the two nations, explaining the relevant background to the conflict and to all the major participants at the conference, from the three heads of state to their mostly well-known seconds working furiously behind the scenes. What emerges is not what we've come to think of as an unprecedented yet "simple" peace. Rather, Wright reveals the full extent of Carter's persistence in pushing peace forward, the extraordinary way in which the participants at the conference--many of them lifelong enemies--attained it, and the profound difficulties inherent in the process and its outcome, not the least of which has been the still unsettled struggle between the Israelis and the Palestinians. In Thirteen Days in September, Wright gives us a gripping work of history and reportage that provides an inside view of how peace is made.

On the 6th October 1981 Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was assassinated by members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, a terrorist group that was enraged by the peace treaty he had negotiated with Israel. His assassins were arrested, put on trial and executed, while the death of the President led to Vice President Hosni Mubarak becoming the premier just eight days after the assassination. He went on to rule for almost 30 years before he stepped down during the 2011 Egyptian Revolution.
Three years before his assassination, Sadat had signed the Camp David Accords and jointly received the Nobel Peace Prize with Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. The Accords led to Egypt signing the Egypt–Israel Peace Treaty in 1979, which marked the first time that an Arab nation had formally recognised Israel. Although the treaty ended 40 years of almost continuous war between the two nations, it was met with hostility by some people in Egypt who felt that Sadat had betrayed the Palestinian cause and the honour or Egypt.
With hostility to his rule growing at home, Sadat was surrounded by security as he observed the 6th October parade that marked the Egyptian crossing of the Suez Canal at the start of the Yom Kippur War. The assassins were in the procession on board an artillery truck that stopped directly in front of Sadat and allowed them to approach the President. Believing that this was part of the proceedings, Sadat stood to salute them but was killed in a hail of grenades and indiscriminate firing of AK-47s. He died in hospital two hours later.

Egyptian Revolution of 2011 (Wikipedia):
The Egyptian Revolution of 2011, locally known as the January 25 Revolution (Arabic: ثورة 25 يناير; Thawret 25 yanāyir),[21] began on 25 January 2011 and was part of the Arab Spring. It consisted of demonstrations, marches, occupations of plazas, riots, non-violent civil resistance, acts of civil disobedience and strikes. Millions of protesters from a range of socio-economic and religious backgrounds demanded the overthrow of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. The revolution included Islamic, liberal, anti-capitalist, nationalist and feminist elements. Violent clashes between security forces and protesters resulted in at least 846 people killed and over 6,000 injured.[22][23] Protesters burned over 90 police stations.[24] The protests took place in Cairo, Alexandria and other cities.
The Egyptian protesters' grievances focused on legal and political issues,[25] including police brutality, state-of-emergency laws,[1] lack of free elections and freedom of speech, corruption,[2] and economic issues including high unemployment, food-price inflation[3] and low wages.[1][3] The protesters' primary demands were the end of the Mubarak regime and emergency law, freedom, justice, a responsive non-military government and a voice in managing Egypt's resources.[26] Strikes by labour unions added to the pressure on government officials.[27]
During the uprising the capital, Cairo, was described as "a war zone"[28] and the port city of Suez saw frequent violent clashes. Protesters defied a government-imposed curfew, which was unenforced by the police and military. Egypt's Central Security Forces police, loyal to Mubarak, was gradually replaced by military troops. In the chaos, there was looting by gangs which was instigated (according to opposition sources) by plainclothes police officers. In response, watch groups were organized by civilians to protect neighbourhoods.[29][30][31][32][33]
International reaction has varied, with most Western nations condoning peaceful protests but concerned about the stability of Egypt and the region. The Egyptian and Tunisian revolutions have influenced demonstrations in other Arab countries, including Yemen, Bahrain, Jordan, Syria and Libya.
Mubarak dissolved his government, appointing former head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Directorate Omar Suleiman vice-president in an attempt to quell dissent. Mubarak asked aviation minister and former chief of Egypt's air force Ahmed Shafik to form a new government. Mohamed ElBaradei became a major opposition figure, with all major opposition groups supporting his role as negotiator for a transitional unity government.[34] In response to mounting pressure, Mubarak announced he did not intend to seek re-election in September.[35]
On 11 February 2011 Vice President Omar Suleiman announced that Mubarak would resign as president, turning power over to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF).[36] The military junta, headed by effective head of state Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, announced on 13 February that the constitution would be suspended, both houses of parliament dissolved and the military would rule for six months (until elections could be held). The previous cabinet, including Prime Minister Ahmed Shafik, would serve as a caretaker government until a new one was formed.[37] Shafik resigned on 3 March, a day before major protests to force him to step down were planned, and was replaced by former transport minister Essam Sharaf.[38] On 24 May 2011, Mubarak was ordered to stand trial on charges of premeditated murder of peaceful protesters and, if convicted, could face the death penalty.[12] On 2 June 2012 Mubarak was found guilty of complicity in the murder of protesters and sentenced to life imprisonment, but the sentence was overturned on appeal and a retrial ordered.[39] A number of protesters, upset that others tried with Mubarak (including his two sons) were acquitted, took to the streets.[40] Mubarak was eventually cleared of all charges on 29 November 2014,[41] although Egypt's prosecutor general announced he would appeal the verdict.[42]
