Damascus (Arabic: دِمَشق / ALA-LC: Dimashq; commonly known in Syria as al-Sham (Arabic: الشام / al-Shām), and as the City of Jasmine (Arabic: مدينة الياسمين / Madīnat al-Yāsmīn), is the capital and the second largest city of Syria. Both are part of the country's 14 governorates. In addition to being one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Damascus is a major cultural and religious center of the Levant. The city has an estimated population of 1,711,000 (2009 est.).
Located in southwestern Syria, Damascus is the center of a large metropolitan area of 2.6 million people (2004). Geographically embedded on the eastern foothills of the Anti-Lebanon mountain range 80 kilometres (50 mi) inland from the eastern shore of the Mediterranean on a plateau 680 metres (2,230 ft) above sea-level, Damascus experiences a semi-arid climate due to the rain shadow effect. The Barada River flows through Damascus.
First settled in the 2nd millennium BC, it was chosen as the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate from 661 to 750. After the victory of the Abbasid dynasty, the seat of Islamic power was moved to Baghdad. Damascus saw a political decline throughout the Abbasid era, only to regain significant importance in the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods. During Ottoman rule, the city decayed completely while maintaining a certain cultural prestige. Today, it is the seat of the central government and all of the government ministries. Damascus was chosen as the 2008 Arab Capital of Culture.

Damascus is the capital of Syria and is a symbol of culture in the Near East. A hundred kilometres from the Mediterranean coast, the strategically located city was once the capital of the Umayyad.Cannons, the busts of various presidents and military vehicles are displayed in the large courtyard of the Takiyeh Mosque, an ancient Dervish monastery complex. Built in 1554 and designed by Ottoman master architect, Sinan, it also includes an adjoining inn for the numerous pilgrims who travelled to Mecca. Damascus has always been much prized: by the pharaohs and the Babylonian monarch, Nebukadnezar, and later, Alexander The Great. Then came Persian, Roman and Islamic emperors followed by the Crusaders and Mongols. The Kalaa Citadel is situated on the periphery of the old town that was once surrounded by huge walls. It was from here that Saladin fended off the attacks of the Crusaders. The Romans built a fort here that was constantly extended with impressive walls and towers and located directly outside the city wall, the River Barada was also of strategic importance. Although the Mongols destroyed the inner buildings, the fortress walls survived. The Suq is an important part of every Islamic city, a market that originated in ancient times. Thousands of shops in numerous interconnected lanes form the commercial heart of Damascus. In the Gold Suq everything glitters, bracelets, rings and even a large variety of kitchen utensils. Damascus has for thousands of years been a place desired by the powerful. Yet it has managed to survive and is still the most beautiful capital city in the Near East.

The shortest and fastest route from the Mediterranean to Mesopotamia and Persia travels directly past the Tadmur Oasis thus it was only a question of time until an important trading post was founded there. Around a quarter of a million Bedouins live in Syria’s desert areas. They are nomads who speak Arabic and belong to the Muslim faith and their income is derived from sheep, goats and camels which produce both milk and meat. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

"Jeannie here. Our time in Damascus has been too brief! We arrived on Friday - the holy day - so our fantastic guide arranged for us to visit a mosque that has an attached cultural center. We met with local and western Muslims to discuss their beliefs and their lives as Muslims. It was a fascinating experience. As we have traveled through Syria, I have become increasingly bothered by my role as a woman here. Because my hair is not covered, I am either treated as an object by men or scorned by women - or completely ignored. I know that I have reacted in a typically western way, but by this point I was looking for personal interaction with women to see how they feel about their lifestyle and their roles in society. To enter the mosque we had to part from the men in our group, wear hooded cloaks, and use separate entrances and rooms to hear the sermon. We then met as a mixed group, but the men were on one side and the women were on the other. The Muslim women did not speak often during our dialogue, so I was extremely interested to see what they would say during our segregated lunch. We all moved downstairs to have lunch, but the women passed through the dining hall and into a small corner room to wait. We could hear the men in the hall eating and talking, but we apparently were waiting for our separate table to be made ready? I asked why we were separated from the men for the meal, and the women replied that it was more comfortable for them in social settings to meet as women apart from the men, but also that Allah asks it. With more discussion, we realized that women and men do not really have the opportunity to socialize outside of their families. In fact, many young people have to rely on their relatives of the opposite gender to find suitable mates for them because they have so little access. The limited realm of women's daily lives include their husbands, children, and female relatives living nearby. They shop in the morning, and then stay in the home most of the day. It they wish to socialize, it must be in someone's home. At weddings, the women celebrate together, apart from the men's celebrations. We were told that women can work if they wish to, but that it is often an overwhelming prospect because of their considerable duties in the home. Rather than seeing the housework as difficult, the women told us that they were well taken care of by their hardworking husbands and that they felt they had considerable domestic power. Leaving the mosque, I felt a little less open-minded than when we arrived in Syria, but at the same time I realized I was as incapable of setting aside my own cultural beliefs about equality and women's roles as the women I met were. Back to Damascus... It really is a lovely city. We enjoyed the National Museum, visiting the handicraft souq (beautiful woodcarvings and inlay work), the main souqs and the mosque. Our guide took us to the Palace of Culture one night after hours (with a little bribe) to see and smell an elegant old courtyard planted in orange trees and snapdragons with beautiful woodworking and decorations. It was the kind of place you want to visit daily to restore a sense of tranquility. I had a small adventure with three other women on the tour when we decided to find a beauty salon. We had some trouble finding a place, and then we found that hairstylist Tony was liberal in his interpretation of one inch, but there were no tears. We feel we could have spent another day here easily - wandering the side streets and enjoying more tea, but Jordan awaits us."

Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

A senior Iranian lawmaker says the Islamic Republic will consider sending troops to Syria if Damascus requests.
Speaking in the Syrian capital Damascus, Alaeddin Boroujerdi said such a request will be discussed at the Iranian parliament. Boroujerdi added that the Syrian government should be part of any plan to end the conflict ravaging the country. He reaffirmed Iran’s support for Syria in its fight against terrorist groups. Boroujerdi said Iran has sent military aid to Syria and Iraq following requests from their governments. He noted that the failure of the US-led attacks on ISIL led to the formation of the anti-terror coalition involving Syria, Iran, Russia, and Iraq. Boroujerdi said the foreign plot against Syria is doomed to failure. Boroujerdi is on a two-day visit to Damascus for talks with Syrian officials.

Israeli police: Man with knife shot at Jerusalem's Damascus Gate
Violence has once again broken out near Jerusalem's Damascus Gate Plaza, where police on Wednesday shot and killed a man dressed in combat fatigues and armed with a knife.
Initially, Israeli police said an attacker tried to stab a private bodyguard protecting a family visiting Jerusalem's Old City. A short time later, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said the incident began when border police saw a man who seemed nervous and suspicious.
As officers approached him, Samri said, the man allegedly lunged at them with a knife. The man then ran toward another police unit, members of which yelled out, "He's a terrorist," before they fatally shot him, Samri said.
The Israel Security Agency identified the perpetrator as Basel Sider, 19, of the West Bank city of Hebron. He had no record, the agency said.
The incident was another violent episode near the gates of the Old City, sacred to three world religions.
Israeli police last Saturday killed two Palestinians who stabbed officers and others, authorities said. A 16-year-old Palestinian boy stabbed two Israelis about 150 yards from the entrance, police said.+Israel Police (Organization)

ISIS considers marginal Muslims apostate and deserving of death. But I think anyone willing to live peacefully with the Jewish people are welcome to stay in Israel. Those who wish harm to Jews or Israel need to be deported. Those who actually kill or try to kill Jews should be executed.

I saw myself get baptized and anointed with the Holy Ghost and these words were spoken to me "you moved a lot of people". That same day I also received the scar print of the nail that pierced Jesus Christs right hand on my right hand, it appeared for a while and then disappeared. I carry the testimony of Jesus Christ, HE is the son of GOD, sent by the father to be an atoning sacrifice for our sins. GOD rose him from the dead on the third day to justify us by faith and so with the heart man believes unto righteousness (GOD will not know a wicked person and what GOD has done is justified the wicked through the death and resurrection of HIS SON. We are wicked people in GODS eyes without HIS free gift of righteousness through the Gospel of reconciliation.) You must be born again...When man sinned in the beginning of creation it killed his spirit which made him spiritually dead and so all of his offspring (who we are) are/were spiritually dead. So without us doing anything right or wrong, good or evil we were spiritually dead. This explains why we must be born again of water and the spirit. He who has not the spirit of Christ is non of HIS. Pray and ask the Father for the gift of the Holy Spirit. You will NOT enter heaven without him. May GOD Bless each and every one of you, LORD willing, in Jesus Christs name, Amen.
The elements of salvation according to the New Testament holy scriptures... That we believe on Jesus Christ, the Son of GOD sent by the father who shed His blood for the forgiveness of sins, that he was crucified and died and then risen from the dead. He was raised from the dead and shed his blood to justify us by faith and with the heart man believes unto righteousness. With the mouth confession is made unto salvation... Those who believe not on Jesus Christ are in spiritual darkness and GODs wrath abides on them. Unless you repent you will perish so repent ye and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. You must be born again of water and the spirit or you will not enter heaven, without the baptism of the Holy Ghost you do not carry the testimony of Jesus Christ. And in the book of Revelation we find the following verse; and they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. We must obey Christ and keep His commandments, Loving GOD with all mind, body, and soul and loving each other. We must bear "Good Fruit", if we bear "Evil Fruit" We will be cast into the fire. We are not to hide the word of the Gospel; we are to be instant in season and out of season. There are 2 new laws in the New Testament, the law of the spirit and the law of faith. We must walk according to the spirit putting to death the deeds of the flesh. We must also keep the faith of Jesus Christ. Get a bible and start reading it now, read it every day. GODS Word is living and active and it sanctifies us by truth, His word is truth. Jesus also told us that he did not come to abolish the law and the prophets of the Old Testament; the Old Testament is also part of our instructions in righteousness. They will teach us more about the True Jesus Christ of the Holy Scriptures and help us become more pleasing to GOD, growing in Faith, Godliness, and holiness. God gives us our free gift of righteousness when we believe in our heart that God rose Jesus Christ from the dead. Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: Unless our righteousness exceeds that of the Pharisees and scribes we will in no wise enter heaven, our own righteousness is nothing but filthy rags....Note; Filthy rags serve a purpose, they save a person from all kinds of embarrassment... We must receive the Kingdom of heaven like a child. (Children are usually ready to learn, they are humble, they ask lots of questions, etc.) We must be conformed to the image of Christ... Trust in Jesus Christ with all your heart. We must Abide in the doctrine of Christ or we don't have God; He that abides in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If we walk in the light as He is in the light then Blood of Jesus Christ will cleanse us from all sin. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: for by faith ye stand; faith also includes Obedience, see Matthew 8:9-10. Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling..
