Awaji Island (淡路島, Awaji-shima) is an island in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, in the eastern part of the Seto Inland Sea between the islands of Honshū and Shikoku. The island has an area of 592.17 km², and is the largest of the Inland Sea's islands.
As a transit between those two islands, Awaji originally means "the road to Awa", the historic province bordering the Shikoku side of the Naruto Strait, now part of Tokushima Prefecture.
The island is separated from Honshū by the Akashi Strait and from Shikoku by the Naruto Strait. Since April 5, 1998 it has been connected to Kobe on Honshū by the Akashi-Kaikyō Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in the world. Since its completion the Kobe Awaji Naruto Expressway across the island has been the main eastern land link between Honshū and Shikoku. The Naruto whirlpools form in the strait between Naruto, Tokushima and Awaji.
The Nojima Fault, responsible for the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake, cuts across the island. A section of the fault was protected and turned into the Nojima Fault Preservation Museum in the Hokudancho Earthquake Memorial Park (北淡町震災記念公園) to show how the movement in the ground cut across roads, hedges and other installations. Outside of this protected area, the fault zone is less visible. The Onaruto Bridge Memorial Museum (大鳴門橋記念館, Ōnarutokyō Kinenkan) and the Uzushio Science Museum (うずしお科学館, Uzushio Kagakukan) are located near Fukura.
An island /ˈaɪlənd/ or isle /ˈaɪl/ is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water. Very small islands such as emergent land features on atolls can be called islets, skerries, cays or keys. An island in a river or a lake island may be called an eyot or ait, or a holm. A grouping of geographically or geologically related islands is called an archipelago, e.g. the Philippines.
An island may be described as such despite the presence of an artificial land bridge, for example Singapore and its causeway, or the various Dutch delta islands, such as IJsselmonde. Some places may even retain "island" in their names for historical reasons after being connected to a larger landmass by a wide land bridge, such as Coney Island or Coronado Island. Conversely, when a piece of land is separated from the mainland by a man-made canal, for example the Peloponnese by the Corinth Canal, it is generally not considered an island.
There are two main types of islands: continental islands and oceanic islands. There are also artificial islands.
Greetings and salutations! My friend Roger, whom you may remember from that video that I crossed a huge bridge and nearly had a heart attack, invited me out to Awaji Island, an island with one of the largest gardens in Japan. We continue our travel to Akashi and Awaji Island in search for local tastes. After visiting the fish market in Akashi (please see the previous movie), we took a catamaran speed boat to Awaji. This island is well known for high quality fruits and vegetables (Awaji onions are juicy and sweet), and of course local seafood. We tried local delicacies at Iwaya Port izakaya and happily report to you our impressions :) ======================================================= Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chottomatte.net Follow us on twitter: https://twitter.com/chottom1 Follow us on Instagram https://instagram.com/chottomatte_net/ =======================================================

"Awaji Island (淡路島 Awajishima in Japanese) is a not-terribly-large island - about the same size as Singapore - that marks the eastern boundary of the Seto Inland Sea of Japan. Thanks to a set of new bridges and a cross-island expressway, most visitors just zip through on their way from Honshu to Shikoku." "to see -To see the Naruto whirlpools, stop at the expressway rest area at the southernmost tip of the island near the Onaruto bridge. If you have money to spare, you can take a little boat cruise to see them up close; note that whirlpools only appear when the tide is coming in or out. - Aside from whirlpools and burial mounds and onions, Awajishima's main claim to fame are its beaches, especially on the more sparsely settled northern coast. They're nothing spectacular by international...

Naruto is a beautiful place, a little tip of land with a bridge crossing over to Awaji Island that is connected to Japan's great Honshu island by the longest suspension bridge in the world, Akashi Kaikyo bridge. As if that's not cool enough, beneath Naruto bridge is the famous Naruto tidal whirlpools you can view by boat or from the bridge. We spent the night beside the bridge, enjoying Japanese food & an onsen overlooking the beautiful views of the Naruto Strait.
