Keith P. Feldman, A Shadow over Palestine: The Imperial Life of Race in America. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 2015. In July 2014, at the height of the most recent Israeli military assault upon Gaza, a major rally was held in New York City—in defense of Israel. “United We Stand with Israel” attracted major figures in city, state, and national politics, the large majority of them progressive Democrats, who offered fiery speeches affirming Israel’s right to self-defense and recommitting to the sacredness of the “special relationship” between the United States and Israel. One of the most resounding rhetorical turns came from Brooklyn Congressman Hakeem ...

Raymond Hinnebusch (RH): Having taught international politics for many years, I became dissatisfied with the texts available for students. Some were purely historical and descriptive. Many were edited collections of chapters on individual countries, often uninformed by a common framework. There was a general failure to bring together levels of analysis such as state formation and international behavior. There was a disconnect between books surveying the Middle East region and the ...

Beyond the Exotic in Ottoman Baths

[Thomas Allom,

Bath houses or hammams were fundamental fixtures of cities and towns throughout the Ottoman world. Western travelers and writers were drawn to the exotic allure of bath houses as spaces associated with leisure and eroticism, which featured prominently in orientalist tropes concerning Europe’s Islamic other. This legacy of exoticism notwithstanding, new scholarship on Ottoman baths demonstrates that the hammam can serve as a site for fruitful and fascinating historical inquiry into the social transformation and dynamics of the Ottoman world. On Ottoman History Podcast, we have featured a number of scholars whose work concerns the hammam and its changing place in Ottoman ...

Abed Al Kadiri: New Blood

[Detail of Abed Al Kadiri's

“I fear […] new blood.” (Ounsi El-Hajj, “Lann,” 1960) Several art historians and philosophers of aesthetics distinguish between two distinct periods, “the age of taste” and “the age of emotion,” the former referring to a time before the development of aesthetics at the hands of Immanuel Kant (d. 1804). This kind of distinction can be easily assimilated into Arabic, particularly the notion of “taste” (dhawq), which, along with its derivative terms, refers to the link between the senses and the arts while “tasting” (tadhawwuq) refers to the human act by which one judges works of art and aesthetic practices. The verb “to taste” (dhaqa) in Arabic ...

Continuing the Struggle

[Victims of the bombing, Ankara, 10 October. Image via Jacobin.]

In Ankara, on 10 October, a few minutes after 10am, two of us (Alp and Max) were on our way to the “Labor, Peace and Democracy” rally. We were a little late and just entering the crowd, rushing towards the train station to meet with others, when the first bomb struck two hundred meters ahead. It all happened at the same time—the explosion, the shockwave, a thirty-foot column of fire and smoke. Everything stopped, then the second bomb exploded. What happened was clear to us, but not the precise dimensions. We pulled back, as did most around us, the crowd remaining astonishingly calm. Within a minute or so, the first cabs with wounded people passed. After a few ...

August 26, 2015 marked the first anniversary of Israel's offensive on the Gaza Strip, during which 2,219 Palestinians were killed. However, a large part of the story is left untold. The majority of those killed lived in refugee camps in the Gaza Strip within a 30 mile (50 km) radius of their homes of origin. A total of 1,236 ...
