Towns on Mexico’s Pacific coast are preparing for the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere to make landfall today. The state of Jalisco is directly in Hurricane Patricia’s path, with Mexico’s second-largest city Guadalajara as well as tourist destinations like Puerto Vallarta and Manzanilla in danger.
The Vallarta Daily reported Evacuations in Puerto Vallarta and other coastal towns began yesterday, and 50,000 people are expected to leave their homes before this afternoon. The Mexican government has declared a state of emergency in 34 municipalities in Jalisco ahead of the storm. Mexico’s national weather service predicted the storm will also cause heavy rains from Thursday to Saturday.

Costa Rica is a small country in Central America bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the Caribbean Sea to the east.
See in Costa Rica
================
Wildlife - Costa Rica is world famous for having an incredibly high level of biodiversity throughout its tropical forests (this covers what you may hear referred to as rain forests, cloud forests, and dry forests). There are tropical mammals such as monkeys, sloths, tapirs, and wild cats as well as an amazing assortment of insects and other animals. There are many many birds (both migratory and resident) - more on that below. With 25% of the country being national parks and protected areas, there are still many places you can go to see the abundant wildlife and lush vegetation of the country. Just like anywhere, the farther you get off the beaten path, the more likely you are to see a wide variety of flora and fauna.
========
Bird Watching - One of the most wonderful activities for people who love nature is bird watching. You can enjoy bird watching in many areas of Costa Rica. Due to the great diversity of climates, temperatures and forest types in Costa Rica, there is a wonderful variety of birds, with over 800 species. Some helpful books available on bird watching are Birds of Costa Rica by F. Gary Stiles and Alexander Skutch (Cornell University Press) or An Illustrated Field Guide to Birds of Costa Rica, illustrated by Victor Esquivel Soto. These books can be found at certain bookstores in San José or before coming to Costa Rica. They are both heavy books; many people tear out the plates of the Stiles & Skutch book to carry into the field and leave the rest of the book in their car or room. Plastic cards with the most common birds are available for many areas and are sold at gift shops.
Volcanoes -Costa Rica is one of the most seismologicly active countries in the western hemisphere, and as a result several volcanoes have sprouted over the years- most notably volcanoes Poas, Irazu, and Arenal.
Beaches in Costa Rica
============
Costa Rica is a country with an extraordinary wealth of things to do, but regardless of your travel interests, you're going to want to spend time at one of the country's great beaches. The lion's share of beach tourism is concentrated on the Pacific side, in the Central Pacific region near San José, the Nicoya Peninsula, and in the dry tropical forests of Guanacaste. Less touristed, but no less beautiful are the beaches in the tropical rainforest of the southern Pacific coast near Corcovado National Park, or on the exotic, rastafarian, eco-tourism paradise of the Caribbean side.
Fishing
========
Costa Rica has some of the best Sport Fishing in the world and is the first country to practice catch and release fishing. The Pacific side has incredible fishing for Sailfish, Marlin, Dorado, Tuna, Wahoo, Roosterfish, Snapper, Grouper and more. The Caribbean side is famous for big Tarpon and big Snook. Over sixty-four world records have been caught in Costa Rica. Half day, Full day and Multi-Day Trips are available.

Travel video about destination Nice in France.
Nice is the Côte d'Azur's fascinating and colorful city located on the curve of Angel Bay, a metropolis that has lost little of its turn of the century charm. It is also a place of contrast with all the pulsating life of an international city mixed with the rich Mediterranean flair of the south.
The magnificent Promenade Des Anglais was named after the resort's former large contingent of English visitors and was built during the 19th century.
The historical centre of the city, Vielle Ville, has become the home of Arabian immigrants, thus couscous features prominently on the menu. The old fish market is the most beautiful on the entire Côte d'Azur and its traditional displays of seafood are a feast to the eye.
The Russian Tsars also spent much time in Nice and around 1900, a Russian Orthodox Church was built. With its six eye-catching onion-shaped domes, it was designed by the Russian architect, Preobrajensky, and is the most beautiful example of its kind in the western hemisphere. The foundations of the building were designed in the shape of a Greek crucifix and the interior features a remarkable collection of Russian icons.
A good way to visit numerous places of interest is by taking a journey on a small sightseeing train known as the Azur Express.
Just outside Nice, there are some remarkable Roman ruins and a villa on the excavated site contains the Matisse Museum that features each of the famous artist's sculptures.
Nice is more than 'nice' -- joie de vivre never had it so good!

Travel to Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Belize to delve into the legacies of the ancient Mayan civilization. More than 3,000 years ago this sophisticated culture emerged from the humid rain forests, flourished for centuries, and then vanished. In that time, the Mayans created a complex writing system, devised a calendar equivalent to our own, introduced the concept of zero in mathematics, predicted lunar and solar eclipses, and built the tallest structures in the western hemisphere—all while Paris was just a sleepy village. Today, their ghostly remnants are scattered across Central America in an ancient, 1,500-mile-long trade ring known as La Ruta Maya. From ruins to rituals to rural villages, we'll trace the footsteps of the enigmatic Mayan culture as only OAT can—in our trademark small groups. Along the way, we'll meet modern-day descendants preserving their Mayan heritage with jade carvings, colorful weavings, and warm hospitality. Join us as we travel back in time to explore the Route of the Maya.

Travel video about destination Madinat Al-Zahra in Spain.
A few kilometres outside the city of Córdoba in southern Spain lie the remains of a once legendary Moorish palace district, the Mahdinat Al-Zahra.It is believed that in around 936 A.D. the Moorish monarch, Abd Ar-Rahman The Third, ordered the construction of the huge residence. Work on the palace, the administrative sections and the gardens took more than forty years to complete. Over ten thousand workmen were involved in its construction but today little of the former splendour of this ‘Andalusian Versailles’ is apparent as only the mighty ruins of the former terraced palace have survived to the present day. Thanks to the intensive restoration and reconstruction work of recent years the buildings of the former Reception Hall provide a fascinating insight into the royal court of the Moors. The Salón of Abd Ar-Rahman The Third shines out once again in all of its ancient and glorious splendour. Soon after its completion the Mahdinat Al-Zahra was described as a ‘wonder of the western hemisphere’, a fairy-tale-like synthesis of the arts located upon the picturesque southern slopes of the Sierra Morena.

(( Wildlife )) - Costa Rica is world famous for having an incredibly high level of biodiversity throughout its tropical forests (this covers what you may hear referred to as rain forests, cloud forests, and dry forests).
(( Bird Watching )) - One of the most wonderful activities for people who love nature is bird watching.
(( Volcanoes )) -Costa Rica is one of the most seismologicly active countries in the western hemisphere, and as a result several volcanoes have sprouted over the years- most notably volcanoes Poas, Irazu, and Arenal.

Museums in Chicago - Illinois
Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum
Opened in 1930, the Adler Planetarium was the Western Hemisphere's first public museum devoted to the stars. It still maintains the traditional in-the-round Zeiss planetarium (Sky Theater) as well as the state-of-the-art interactive Sky Rider where, with the help of armrest controls, visitors can choose how they would like to journey into space. Other interactive exhibits include 3-D computer animations of the birth of the solar system and of the Milky Way.
Opening Times: Daily 0930-1800 (late May-early Sep); daily 1000-1600 (early Sep-late May); first Friday of every month 0930-2200 (all year).
Admission Fees: Yes
Disabled Access: No
Unesco: No
Address: 1300 South Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, United States
National Vietnam Veterans' Art Museum
Enter to the sound of tinkling bells, then look toward the ceiling and see Above and Beyond: 58,000 imprinted dog tags of the men and women who lost their lives in the Vietnam War. This museum is dedicated to collecting, preserving and displaying artwork done by Vietnam veterans, which includes the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese as well as the allies. Artefacts and artwork give one a more intimate look and a better understanding of a most unpopular war.
Opening Times: Tues-Sat 1000-1700.
Admission Fees: Yes
Disabled Access: No
Unesco: No
Address: 1801 South Indiana Avenue, Chicago, United States
Museum of Science and Industry
Designed by Daniel Burnham for the World's Columbian Exposition in 1892, this museum continues to charm both kids and science buffs. Ride through the coal mine, explore the WW2 German submarine, the U-505, walk through the 6m (20ft) human heart or try to catch some fairy dust at Colleen Moore's Fairy Castle. Families especially enjoy the hands-on Imagination Station and the acoustically perfect Whispering Gallery. The huge screen of the Omnimax Theater features science and space-related films.
Opening Times: Daily 0930-1600.
Admission Fees: Yes
Disabled Access: No
Unesco: No
Address: 5700 South Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, United States
Field Museum
Home to 65-million year-old 'Sue', the nearest to a complete Tyrannosaurus Rex that has ever been discovered, the Field Museum explores the world's diverse environments and cultures. The entrance leads into the Dinosaur Hall, which is filled with real and replica skeletons. The Africa exhibit experience takes visitors from the city streets into the harsh but magnificently beautiful Sahara and into the galley of a slave ship. Inside Ancient Egypt is just that, with 23 real mummies in a recreated burial chamber. Shrink to the size of a bug and burrow into the surface of the soil at the Underground Adventure. Weekends are most crowded. The Ancient Americas , the museum's newest permanent exhibit, scans 13,000 years of pre-European, western hemisphere culture.
Opening Times: Mon-Sat 1000-1700, Sun 1100-1700.
Admission Fees: Yes
Disabled Access: No
Unesco: No

It was massive, one of the first great cities of the Western Hemisphere. And its origins are a mystery.
Teotihuacan City of the Gods - Top Documentary
It was built by hand more than a thousand years before the swooping arrival of the Nahuatl-speaking Aztec in central Mexico. But it was the Aztec, descending on the abandoned site, no doubt falling awestruck by what they saw, who gave it a name: Teotihuacan.
A famed archaeological site located fewer than 30 miles (50 kilometers) from Mexico City, Teotihuacan reached its zenith between 100 B.C. and A.D. 650. It covered 8 square miles (21 square kilometers) and supported a population of a hundred thousand, according to George Cowgill, an archaeologist at Arizona State University and a National Geographic Society grantee.
"It was the largest city anywhere in the Western Hemisphere before the 1400s," Cowgill says. "It had thousands of residential compounds and scores of pyramid-temples and was comparable to the largest pyramids of Egypt."
Oddly, Teotihuacan, which contains a massive central road (the Street of the Dead) and buildings including the Temple of the Sun and the Temple of the Moon, has no military structures—though experts say the military and cultural wake of Teotihuacan was heavily felt throughout the region

Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and having only one trauma center leaves over 250,000 Haitians, young and old, mothers, fathers, and children lacking the necessary medical care they desperately need. Back in 2010, an earthquake killed over 325,000 Haitians, many of which are still recovering from this national tragedy. Haiti also has the highest HIV rate and highest maternal, neonatal, and pediatric mortalities. L'Artibonite, the planned site for the hospital complex, is ideal and only available if we work together and act now. Please, help support in obtaining the land for the hospital complex by making a donation today. No donations too small. Support a Healthy Haiti for tomorrow.

Located in the heart of the Andes, Potosí was arguably the most important urban center in the Western Hemisphere during the colonial era. It was internationally famous for its abundant silver mines and regionally infamous for its labor draft. Set in this context of opulence and oppression associated with the silver trade, Trading Roles emphasizes daily life in the city’s streets, markets, and taverns. As Jane E. Mangan shows, food and drink transactions emerged as the most common site of interaction for Potosinos of different ethnic and class backgrounds. Within two decades of Potosí’s founding in the 1540s, the majority of the city’s inhabitants no longer produced food or alcohol for themselves; they purchased these items. Mangan presents a vibrant social history of colonial Potosí through an investigation of everyday commerce during the city’s economic heyday, between the discovery of silver in 1545 and the waning of production in the late seventeenth century. Drawing on wills and dowries, judicial cases, town council records, and royal decrees, Mangan brings alive the bustle of trade in Potosí. She examines quotidian economic transactions in light of social custom, ethnicity, and gender, illuminating negotiations over vendor locations, kinship ties that sustained urban trade through the course of silver booms and busts, and credit practices that developed to mitigate the pressures of the market economy. Mangan argues that trade exchanges functioned as sites to negotiate identities within this colonial multiethnic society. Throughout the study, she demonstrates how women and indigenous peoples played essential roles in Potosí’s economy through the commercial transactions she describes so vividly.

Alejandro Werner, director of the Western Hemisphere Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), spoke about Latin America's economic outlook for 2015 at AS/COA in New York on January 22. The former Mexican undersecretary of finance talked about IMF projections for countries such as Venezuela, Mexico, and Brazil, highlighting the end of a decade in which countries in Latin America enjoyed "exceptional circumstances" when it comes to commodities at high prices.
Even though the IMF has downgraded its projections for Mexico's economic growth in 2015, Werner said that uncertaintity associated with last year's fiscal reforms have now passed and potential in the energy sector is huge for many industries in the next years. In Brazil's case—one country in the region for which the IMF forecasts limited growth in 2015—Werner demonstrated more optimism about recent macro economic policies, which may generate businesses confidence in the short term.
He answered questions from the audience about bonds, expected growth in certain industries in the region, and what Latin American governments can do to boost their projections. When talking about social inclusion in the region, Werner explained that the main question from now on is whether countries in Latin America can sustain an inclusive growth model with a much tighter government budget.
Speakers:
- Alejandro Werner, Director, Western Hemisphere Department, International Monetary Fund
- Lisa Schineller, Managing Director, Sovereign Ratings, Standard & Poor's (Moderator)

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie had a frank conversation about U.S. policy towards the region with AS/COA President and CEO Susan Segal during the 45th Annual Washington Conference of the Americas. The governor talked about his recent trips to Mexico and Canada and said the United States should not think of its neighbors as an "afterthought." He spoke about New Jersey's trade ties with Mexico, immigration, and recent policy decisions such as the Keystone XL pipeline and thawing relations with Cuba. When it comes to shifting Cuba ties, Christie said he doesn't "think we [the United States] should be normalizing relations or taking people off the terrorism watch list who continue to harbor terrorists in this world."

The Trans-Pacific Partnership: What's at Stake for the Western Hemisphere?

"[The Trans-Pacific Partnership] is a force for positive changes across the board," said U.S. Representative Gregory Meeks in remarks before a panel discussion on the trade deal, better known as TPP. Experts agreed that the agreement—currently being debated in Congress—could represent great social developments along with economic growth. "It will make more robust, in general, the business environment in [Peru], the rule of law, the institutions—which is really what's at stake for us more than the actual trade benefits," said Ambassador of Peru Luis Miguel Castilla.
Though free-trade agreements exist among many of the 12 countries involved in the deal, the TPP would take free trade to the next level, said the State Department's Kurt Tong, with provisions on labor, climate change, intellectual property, and e-commerce. "And very importantly, TPP is directly addressing the question on how to get small and medium businesses participating more in international trade," said Tong.
Speakers:
- Gregory Meeks, U.S. Representative (D-NY); Co-Chair, Friends of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Caucus (keynote)
- Luis Miguel Castilla, Ambassador of Peru; former Minister of Economy and Finance
- Miriam Sapiro, Principal, Summit Strategies and Nonresident Senior Fellow, Brookings Institution; former Deputy U.S. Trade Representative
- Kurt Tong, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs, U.S. Department of State
