Burl Ives - The original recording of Ghost Riders In The Sky
This is the first recording of this famous song by someone other than the writer, Stan Jones, who recorded it in 1948. In February 1949, Burl Ives, famous as a folk singer for years before he became an actor, recorded this. Vaughn Monroe's big baritone and orchestra version became a number one hit a month later, but it's great to listen to Burl sing this much simpler version, just his clear tenor

With his grandfatherly image, Burl Ives parlayed his talent as a folksinger into a wide-ranging career as a radio personality and stage and screen actor. After spending his early 20s traveling the country as an itinerant singer, Ives moved to New York City in 1937. By the end of 1938, he had made his Broadway debut, and he also sang folk songs in Greenwich Village clubs. In 1940, Ives began to app

Liner notes:
Burl Ives began singing at age five, when he entertained at a soldiers' reunion. He has been entertaining ever since. Taken early with wanderlust, Ives left Eastern Illinois State Teachers College at the end of his sophmore year and took off on assorted journeys, literally singing for his supper. En route, through the Alleghenies and along various rivers, Ives listend to other singers, learning their songs and building a base of his enormous repertoire.
He returned to school for his junior year and most of the senior session. Then, two months before graduation, Ives took off again, never to return. He spent the next two years as an itinerant troubadour, carrying his guitar in a bright yellow case and his clothes in a black valise.
Inevitably, Ives drifted toward New York City, where he settled down, appearing on occasional radio programs and on the stage. Then he was asked to appear on "Forecast", a series of experimental programs designed by the Columbia Broadcasting System. His own segment, called "Back Where I come From", proved so popular that it launched a regular Ives series. Later, Ives starred as "The Wayfaring Stranger", the title of his autobiography and of an earlier Columbia Collection (CL 628).
Although he has never given up singing, Burl Ives has expanded his performing range considerably. For his dramatic work in the motion picture, "The Big Country", he won an Academy Award in 1958 His performance in "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" on both stage and screen was widely acclaimed. He has also been seen on stage in "This Is The Army" and "Sing Out, Sweet Land", and many motion pictures, including "Thunderhead", for which his song "Ballad of Thunderhead" received a special citation.
But the Wayfaring Stranger has never strayed far from his first love, the songs and ballads of our country. He continues to sing these plaintive, lovely tunes in recitals and concerts everywhere. This collection offers vintage Ives, a handful of his favorite songs and two that stem from the folk tradition, "Mule Train" and "Riders In The Sky", both big hits a decade ago. All are sung in his inimitable manner and promise rich rewards for everyone who enjoys the music of America.

Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives was an American actor, writer, and folk music singer. As an actor, Ives's work included comedies, dramas, and voice work in theater, television, and motion pictures.
Music critic John Rockwell said, "Ives's voice ... had the sheen and finesse of opera without its latter-day Puccinian vulgarities and without the pretensions of operatic ritual. It was genteel in expressive impact without being genteel in social conformity. And it moved people.
Ives was born in 1909 near Hunt City, an unincorporated town in Jasper County, Illinois near Newton, Illinois, to Levi "Frank" Ives (1880–1947) and Cordelia "Dellie" (née White) (1882–1954). He had six siblings: Audry, Artie, Clarence, Argola, Lillburn, and Norma. His father was first a farmer and then a contractor for the county and others. One day Ives was singing in the garden with his mother, and his uncle overheard them. He invited his nephew to sing at the old soldiers' reunion in Hunt City. The boy performed a rendition of the folk ballad "Barbara Allen" and impressed both his uncle and the audience.

"Yes, kind sir, I sit and spin," mm-hmm
Took Missy Mouse upon his knee, mm-hmm,

With his grandfatherly image, Burl Ives parlayed his talent as a folksinger into a wide-ranging career as a radio personality and stage and screen actor. After spending his early 20s traveling the country as an itinerant singer, Ives moved to New York City in 1937. By the end of 1938, he had made his Broadway debut, and he also sang folk songs in Greenwich Village clubs. In 1940, Ives began to appear regularly on radio, including his own show, The Wayfarin' Stranger, on CBS. Ives made his first records for Stinson, a small folk label, then was signed to Decca, a major label. He made his movie debut in Smoky in 1946. In 1948, his first book, Wayfaring Stranger, was published. In 1949, he had his first chart hit with "Lavender Blue (Dilly Dilly)." The same year, he moved to Columbia Records. With the advent of the long-playing record, Ives suddenly had a flurry of LP releases from his three labels: The Wayfaring Stranger on Stinson; three volumes of Ballads & Folk Songs, Women: Folk Songs About the Fair Sex, Folk Songs Dramatic and Humorous, and Christmas Day in the Morning on Decca; and Wayfaring Stranger, Return of the Wayfaring Stranger, More Folk Songs, American Hymns, The Animal Fair and Mother Goose Songs on Columbia. He also recorded a series of albums for Encyclopedia Brittanica Films under the overall title Historical America in Song. In 1951, he hit the Top Ten with "On Top of Old Smoky." In 1952, he returned to Decca. While continuing to publish books and to act on Broadway and in the movies, Ives made a series of albums that included Coronation Concert, The Wild Side of Life, Men, Down to the Sea in Ships, In the Quiet of the Night, Burl Ives Sings for Fun, Songs of Ireland, Old Time Varieties, Captain Burl Ives' Ark, Australian Folk Songs, and Cheers, all released in the second half of the 1950s. In 1961, Ives oriented himself toward country music, resulting in the hit "A Little Bitty Tear," which made the Top Ten in both the pop and country charts. The single was contained on The Versatile Burl Ives. "Funny Way of Laughin'" was another pop and country Top Ten in 1962; it appeared on It's Just My Funny Way of Laughin' and won Ives a Grammy Award for Best Country Western Recording. He turned his attention primarily to movie work from 1963 on, especially with the Walt Disney studio. But he charted with Pearly Shells in 1964 and made a children's album, Chim Chim Cheree and Other Children's Choices, for Disney Buena Vista Records. At the end of the '60s, Ives returned to Columbia Records for The Times They Are A-Changin' and Softly and Tenderly. He gave up popular recording, but returned in 1973 with the country album Payin' My Dues Again. He also continued to record children's music and also released several religious albums on Word Records. Turning 70 in 1979, he became less active and finally retired to Washington State. In the '90s, Decca and the German Bear Family label reissued many of his recordings. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Crackerby! (1965--66) y The Bold Ones: The Lawyers (1969--72). Así mismo, Ives participó de manera ocasional en producciones de tema macabro, como The Man Who Wanted to Live Forever (1970) y The Other Way Out (1972), esta última dentro del show de Rod Serling Galería Nocturna.

When Benjie, a black man who fought in the Civil War, returns to the southern town of Ironside, his return is not exactly a welcome one. The citizens are already uptight about the color of his skin...but the fact that he fought for the Union Army and still wears his uniform is all that is needed for hatred and violence to be fanned by an ex-Confederate soldier named Colby. Benjie's one true friend turns out to be Neal McMasters, the rancher who raised Benjie and is now offering him a half-share in the McMasters land. As Benjie tries to make his new home, he helps some starving Indians and finds himself the owner of an Indian woman who eventually becomes his wife. He also uses Indians to help with the round-up. But things come to a violent turn when Kolby's hatred launches a reign of anger that brings about an unusual white-black-red triangle in the phenomenon of prejudice.

Part 1 of 4.
A family of space aliens crash lands on Earth when their spaceship conks out. A hotel owner and his orphaned grandson help to hide them from government authorities and to readjust the space aliens to earth life. Cheesy, semi-predictable, and yet unique, special, and completely unforgettable. I love it! Good family values and, of course, don't trust government nor greedy corrupt businessmen!
I've found this incredibly obscure and difficult to find 1981 movie (on a site specializing in rare TV movies) meant to be TV pilot with:
*** BURL IVES, CHRISTOPHER CONNELLY, MEREDITH MacRAE, JOSEPH CAMPANELLA, TODD PORTER ***
Writer: Michael Fisher Director James L. Conway
I searched for it when I saw Meredith MacRae* was in it.
*Meredith MacRae is most known as Billie-Jo on PETTICOAT JUNCTION and Sally on MY THREE SONS. She is the daughter of Gordon MacRae ("Oklahoma", "On Moonlight Bay", "By the Light of the Silvery Moon", "Carousel") and Sheila MacRae (with Jackie Gleason on "The Honeymooners". She was married to Greg Mullavey ("Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" and "Bob, Carol, Ted, and Alice") and they had daughter Allison Mullavey. Meredith MacRae, according to her daughter Allison on MeredithMacRae.com, hosted Mid-Morning Los Angeles in the 1980s and produced other shows including Born Famous. She was very big on charity work including United Cerebral Palsy and National Council on Alcoholism.
I see many remember and search for this movie to no avail, so I am posting it here with no intention of harm. Owners to the rights of this movie should release it properly on DVD. I would buy it! A well-done remake would be really cool too.
Enjoy!

Burl Ives narrates a film describing how the Navy Weather Service helps Navy and cargo ships to avoid adverse weather conditions. The Navy's Weather Central. Includes classic fax machine, satellite and radar footage, and a row of Control Data Model 607 Magnetic Tape Drives.
US Navy film MN-11138
Public domain film from the US Navy, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and mild video noise reduction applied.
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).

CNMOC is focused on providing critical environmental knowledge to the warfighting disciplines of Anti-Submarine Warfare; Naval Special Warfare; Mine Warfare; Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance; and Fleet Operations (Strike and Expeditionary), as well as to the support areas of Maritime Operations, Aviation Operations, Navigation, Precise Time, and Astrometry.
The Oceanographer of the Navy works closely with the staff of CNMOC to ensure the proper resources are available to meet its mission, to act as a liaison between CNMOC and the Chief of Naval Operations, and to represent the Naval Oceanography Program in interagency and international forums...
