Nottingham Council House Tour (full version).
I was invited on a tour of The Council House, Old Market Square, Nottingham, on 12.August.2009. It's a working building which dates back to 1929. My cousin was the Deputy Lord Mayor of Nottingham at that time and became the Lord Mayor the following year.
00:00 Here we see the front of the Council House and 'Life's A Beach' in Nottingham's Old Market Square.
00:23 The Foyer: The foyer is awash with breathtaking opulence. The floor, staircase, and columns are made of the finest Italian marble. A section of the floor inlaid with a mosaic of the city's coat of arms.
01:12 Staircase, Dome & Statue: The magnificent inner dome above the staircase and the figure called Spirit of Welcome.
01:54 View of Exchange Arcade: Part of The Council House and the majestic paintings adorning the walls.
03:07 The Ballroom: With seven full length windows and the opening to the balcony where Royalty and many other VIP's wave to the crowds gathered in Old Market Square.
03:53 Lord Mayor's Parlour: Inside the Lord Mayor's Parlour which is panelled in antique oak and the official regalia worn for pomp and ceremony.
04:11 Dining Room: A peek into the Dining Room. There is an intricate carving of the Nottingham Coat of Arms above the Italian marble fireplace.
04:25 Sheriff's Room: Is decorated in the Adam style with soft green and guilt. There's a glimpse of the bathroom where Royalty & other VIP's freshen up between events.
05:04 Deputy Lord Mayor's Room: Panoramic footage of the Deputy Lord Mayor's Room. Just above the walnut cabinet is Robin Hood's Arrow, which was presented to the City of Nottingham.
05:51 Committee Room: This is perhaps the most important room in the Council House. It's where important decisions are made by the Executive Board. The walnut horseshoe table surrounded by paintings by a famous local artist.
06:06 Council Chamber: This where councillors meet for full Council meetings. The seating is arranged in a semi circle so that no one is more than 26 feet from the Lord Mayor who chairs the meetings.
06:57 Long Row: One side of the Council House showing one of the entrances to The Exchange, a small unique and exclusive shopping centre.

It is a blueprint that will guide development in Brighton and Hove until 2030.
But more than two years after it was first discussed, politicians on Brighton and Hove City Council still cannot agree on the City Plan.
The document will decide where homes and jobs will be created over the next two decades.
But after a finalised plan was rejected by a government inspector for not providing enough homes, it's now up to councillors to look again.
But with more delays comes more cost - plus the risk that without a plan in place, developers will take advantage.

Presentation by local resident Mr Bill Cook to the Future of Melbourne committee regarding the Baptist Church development on the corner of King, Hawke and Curzon Street West Melbourne.
Agenda Item 6.3 TP-2014-200 - West Melbourne Baptist Church.
Chair and Councillors
Slide 1.
3 points.
1 In a GRZ how do you get from a discretionary maximum of 9 m to 21m?
2 ON the descriptions in the DTPLI fact sheet, apartments with underground car-parking are expected in RGZ, not GRZ. The GRZ is for moderate growth consistent with neighbourhood character. The RZSAC says that the GRZ should not be used as a default growth zone.
3 Our preferred option was NRZ in order to have a mandatory height limit, avoid applications like this and to have certainty. We find the discretion in the GRZ to be a curse
Slide 2,
The lamp post under the arrow is 10.5 m high. The new structure is proposed to be 21 m high. The point of the arrow marks approximately where the new structure will rise to.
The photo is from the eastern corner of Victoria and Errol Streets
Note the general low rise of the area from where the notion of the village atmosphere of the North Melbourne area derives its reputation. The height of this building is going to destroy this local feeling.
Slide 3
Note also the effect of residents being able to engage with local land marks, church spires and clock-towers, and how this development will outcompete these views from many vantage points.
Slide 4
NM Town Hall – key landmark in 21.06. Again notice the height of the arrow and how dominating it is.
Thank you City of Melbourne for changing this local area from being stable in the last MSS revision. Was it a mistake? I think your clear intention was to increase the densification of this area. It has compounded the Planning Scheme – clearly against the wishes of local residents.
This pro-development report gives you the opportunity to achieve this objective. It also enables you to reduce the height to a more appropriate level consistent with a GRZ.
You can see from the above photos how significant this application is in changing the built form of the area around Errol and Victoria Streets, as well as the West Melbourne residential area south of Victoria Street, forever. This change is not justified by the Planning Scheme.
May I commend the Council’s Heritage Consultant for her refreshing views on wide streets and new built form heights being part of the heritage consideration.
May I also record my objection to the proposal of the Council to close the median gap in Hawke Street, opposite the proposed car-entry. I frequently use this gap to make safely a u turn to my house. Its removal will cause a gross reduction in my amenity.

On Tuesday 11 November the West Orchards Shopping Centre in Coventry fell silent as 4000 poppy petals were dropped in memory of the country’s war heroes.
Armistice Day was commemorated at the stroke of the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, with a traditional two minute silence.
The commemorative service supported by The West Orchards, The Royal British Legion and Coventry City Council was a moving, reflective and poignant reminder to city shoppers, workers and residents, of those who gave their lives in service to their country.
The event began at 10.45am with introductory speeches from West Orchard’s manager Andy Talbot, followed by poems from local school children and prayers. This year, the children from St Mary and St Benedicts read the poems and the Remembrance prayers were read by the Reverend David Mayhew.
At 11am a bugler sounded the Last Post which heralds the two minutes silence, during which time thousands of poppy petals were released to fall gracefully from the domed roof of the shopping centre. The Royal British Legion then delivered the Exhortation and Kohima in remembrance of those who lost their lives in battle. Coventry Corp of Drums signalled the end of the silence.
Andy Talbot, director of the West Orchards Shopping Centre said:
“The poppy appeal is vital in order to help pledge support for those who have fought for their country and served in the British Armed Forces. It remains a simple yet powerful service in which shoppers and visitors to the city, can pause for thought to remember anyone who fought and gave their lives in battle, whether the First and Second World Wars or indeed in recent and continuing conflicts. It is also a chance to remember local people who lost their lives, particularly those during the blitz on Coventry”
In attendance at the event were representatives from local churches, community groups, Councillors and the Royal British Legion.

Parties protest ban on public meetings, rallies
Superintendent of Police A. Saravanan Vs Press Reporters
The decision by the police to ban rallies, processions and public meetings in Dindigul for the next three months evoked wide-spread protests by political parties here on Sunday.
Superintendent of Police A. Saravanan issued a circular in this regard considering the present political scenario and law and order situation.
Dindigul district unit of the MDMK passed a resolution at a meeting on Sunday condemning the ban and demanding its early withdrawal.
A resolution passed at an all-party meeting on Saturday termed the SP’s decision ‘anti-democratic’.
Addressing the meeting, Dindigul MLA K. Balabarathi said the ban would snatch the basic rights of the people. It was against democracy. The SP should revoke the ban immediately. It was a strange and unprecedented step. . Moreover, the SP took this decision without consulting political parties or other organisations. It was against Section 19 of the Constitution that ensured freedom of speech and expression, she said.
Above all, the ban was an attempt to prevent political parties from voicing their opinions. To grant permission for public meetings, the police had started asking political parties to remit money in treasury and bring the challan. It was another strange practice, she added.
CITU district secretary K. Ganesan said demonstrations and processions were to draw attention of the government and to highlight demands. The ban amounted to crushing the neck of the democracy. The SP should not indulge in anti-democratic activities.
PMK south district secretary P. Sivakumar said his party condemned the decision.
Victory celebration despite ban, AIADMK cadres block road, remove barricades
All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadres taking out a procession near Central bus stand in Dindigul on Monday.
In defiance of an order, issued recently by the Superintendant of Police, banning public meetings and rallies in the city for the next three months, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadres took out a procession here on Monday while celebrating the landslide win of their party in the Srirangam by-election.
About 200 party workers took out a victory march towards MGR statue junction near the central bus stand from their party office. Another group of cadres removed barricades installed on AMC Road to create space for them to congregate in front of MGR statue.
While the party men garlanded the statue, burst crackers and distributed sweets to those travelling on buses and in private vehicles, AMC Road was closed for traffic. There was a pile-up of vehicles on AMC Road and other roads connecting the central bus stand.
Outstation and town buses bound for various places such as Palani, Pollachi, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Kannivadi, Reddiyarchatram and Vedasandur from central bus stand use AMC Road, the only approach road to Dindigul for vehicles from places in north and west.
Superintendent of Police A. Saravanan had imposed the three-month ban on public meetings, rallies and processions on the premise that such activities of political parties could aggravate the present political scenario and law and order situation.

About 200 party workers congregated at Nehru statue junction near old central bus stand in Theni, burst crackers and distributed sweets.
