Actor George Gaynes has 95 reasons to celebrate, he had his birthday party at Mesa Café.
Those in attendance included Montecito Bank & Trust Chairman Michael Towbes.
Along with family members of the actor, his daughter, former Santa Barbara City Councilwoman Iya Falcone.
Gaynes was featured in the Punky Brewster TV series and General Hospital.
His work also included movies: Tootsie, Wag the Dog and the Crucible.
Gaynes was also heard singing at his birthday bash, he says he got that voice thanks to his Opera performances which started in Milan.

George Gaynes (born George Jongejans; May 16, 1917 – February 15, 2016) was a Finnish-born American singer and actor of stage, screen and television and voice artist. Gaynes' most recognized role in cinema was arguably that of Commandant Eric Lassard in the Police Academy series. To television fans, he is perhaps best known as the curmudgeonly Henry Warnimont on the NBC series Punky Brewster; as high-powered theatrical producer Arthur Feldman on The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, in which Gaynes' real-life wife, Allyn Ann McLerie, co-starred as his love interest; and as Frank Smith, the mob boss brought down by Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) on the soap opera General Hospital.
Gaynes was born in 1917 in Helsinki, in what was then the Grand Duchy of Finland and part of the Russian Empire (Finland became independent that year), the son of Iya Grigorievna De Gay (later known as Lady Iya Abdy), a Russian artist, and Gerrit Jongejans, a Dutch businessman. His uncle was actor Gregory Gaye. His maternal great-great-great-grandfather, Osip Matveevich Gay, was of French desсent. His maternal great-great-grandmother, Yelena Yakovlevna Sadovskaya, was likely of Polish descent. Gaynes served in the Royal Navy during World War II. A United States citizen for most of his life, Gaynes rapidly built a reputation as a Broadway musical comedy performer in the 1940s and 1950s (his best-known appearance was in Wonderful Town, the musical version of My Sister Eileen). He had a career on the opera stages of Italy and France before World War II and in the US after the war.
He alternated between stage musicals and both comic and dramatic plays, including his role as Bob Baker in the original production of Wonderful Town (1953), Jupiter in the Cole Porter musical Out of This World, Gilbert and Sullivan operettas and as Henry Higgins in the 1964 US tour of My Fair Lady. In television, Gaynes played the role of Henry Warnimont, the eventual foster father for Punky Brewster in the eponymous series. (He also provided the voice for Henry in the animated Ruby-Spears version of the show.) Behind the camera, he directed the very last episode of WKRP in Cincinnati. Films in which he appeared include The Way We Were, Nickelodeon and Tootsie. In 1984, he played Commandant Lassard, the titular leader, in the first of seven Police Academy movies, and audiences of the 1980s may remember him as Frank Smith, the Mafia boss who was after Luke and Laura on the soap opera General Hospital. In 1994, he played Serybryalzov in Louis Malle's acclaimed independent feature, Vanya on 42nd Street. Entering films and television in the early 1960s, Gaynes was a regular on the TV daytime dramas Search for Tomorrow and General Hospital, and showed up in such movies as The Group (1966), Marooned (1969) and Doctor's Wives (1971). He also played a role in the sci-fi television series Sliders for one episode, being the aged character of the leading role Quinn Mallory, played by Jerry O'Connell. Gaynes had been married to Canadian-born American stage and television actress and dancer Allyn Ann McLerie since December 20, 1953. They had two children.
Gaynes died at his home in North Bend, Washington on February 15, 2016. He was 98.

To television fans, he is perhaps best known as the curmudgeonly Henry Warnimont on the NBC series Punky Brewster; as high-powered theatrical producer Arthur Feldman on The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, in which Gaynes' real-life wife, Allyn Ann McLerie, co-starred as his love interest; and as Frank Smith, the mob boss brought down by Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) on the soap opera General Hospital.
Gaynes was born in 1917 in Helsinki, in what was then the Grand Duchy of Finland and part of the Russian Empire (Finland became independent that year), the son of Iya Grigorievna De Gay (later known as Lady Iya Abdy), a Russian artist, and Gerrit Jongejans, a Dutch businessman. His uncle was actor Gregory Gaye. His maternal great-great-great-grandfather, Osip Matveevich Gay, was of French desсent. His maternal great-great-grandmother, Yelena Yakovlevna Sadovskaya, was likely of Polish descent. Gaynes served in the Royal Navy during World War II. A United States citizen for most of his life, Gaynes rapidly built a reputation as a Broadway musical comedy performer in the 1940s and 1950s (his best-known appearance was in Wonderful Town, the musical version of My Sister Eileen). He had a career on the opera stages of Italy and France before World War II and in the US after the war.

Gaynes, who was not only a character actor but a baritone singer, made hundreds of appearances both on TV comedies and dramas, as well as 35 films (counting both features and and made-for-TV movies) and many plays, musical comedies and even operas in the U.S. and Europe.
While Gaynes became immediately recognizable to TV viewers and filmgoers, he never achieved name recognition, let alone stardom.
On "Punky Brewster," Gaynes played building manager Henry Warnimont, who finds an abandoned girl (Soleil Moon Frye) and becomes her foster parent and eventually her adoptive father. The sweet relationship between the two of them was the heart of the show.
The actor got the part after two of his most memorable big-screen performances: in 1982's "Tootsie," and in 1984's first entry in the long-running "Police Academy" franchise. (He appeared in all seven of the movies.)

Character actor George Gaynes, known for his work on the TV show Punky Brewster and in films like Tootsie and Police Academy, has died. He was 98 and his daughter, Iya Gaynes Falcone Brown, confirmed the news, the New York Times reports.
Gaynes was born in Helsinki, Finland, on May 16, 1917, and arrived in New York following his service in World War II. Gaynes first worked in opera and on Broadway before focusing on on-screen roles. He worked steadily during the ’60s and ’70s on sitcoms, dramas and soap operas but achieved the peak of his celebrity in the mid-’80s, when he was in his 60s, with Police Academy and his Punky Brewster role as Henry Warnimont, a gruff apartment manager who becomes the foster parent to a young girl.
“I’m too old, I’ve been at it too long, to be exhilarated,” he said in 1984 of his late success. “Of course I’m happy about it. My wife is happy, because we can travel more, and she can get a new couch cover. But knowing the vagaries of the entertainment business, I can’t take it too seriously.”

Gaynes starred in all seven Police Academy movies and had a lead role in the 1980s sitcom Punky Brewster.
He also performed alongside Dustin Hoffman in the Oscar-nominated film, Tootsie.
His longtime agent, Jonathan Howard, told The Hollywood Reporter that his death was "a sad, sad loss. But he had a really long, great life."
Born George Jongejans in Helsinki, he was raised in France, England and Switzerland.
A talented singer, after World War II he moved to the US and joined the New York City Opera, before starring on Broadway.
He appeared on many TV programmes including Mission: Impossible, The Six Million Dollar Man and Hawaii Five-0.
But he is perhaps best remembered by cinema fans as the loveable, bumbling Commandant Eric Lassard in the Police Academy series.
Gaynes retired in 2003 after playing in the feature comedy Just Married, alongside Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy.

Born on May 16, 1917, in Helsinki, Gaynes got his start in the mid-1950s, guesting on TV series including from The Defenders and Cheyenne. He continued to work through the ’60s and ’70s on such small-screen classics as Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Bonanza, Mission: Impossible, Hawaii Five-O, Columbo and The Six Million Dollar Man. Gaynes also did some film work during but was focused on TV.
During the late-’70s heyday of the network miniseries, he appeared in Rich Man, Poor Man: Book II, Washington: Behind Closed Doors and Scruples. By the early ’80s, he began to score more films roles, including two that would solidify his career. In the 1982 Best Picture Oscar winner Tootsie, he played a soap opera star with a crush on his new co-star “Dorothy Michaels” — who actually Michael Dorsey, played by Dustin Hoffman in drag. Two years later, he co-starred as Commandant Lassard in Police Academy, a role he would reprise in a half-dozen sequels and a short-lived 1998 TV series.

Punky Brewsters' first season from 1984 on NBC was a Sunday night hit - and this box set features all 23 episodes!
Punky Brewster: Season One proves the old, family-friendly sitcom is as captivating for kids today as it was in 1984. Somewhere in the tradition of Silas Marner and Chaplin's The Kid, Punky Brewster breathes new life in the story of an isolated bachelor who takes in a lost and forgotten child. Thanks to the inspired casting of Helsinki-born, journeyman actor George Gaynes (The Crucible) as misanthropic photographer-turned-foster dad Henry Warnimont, the tradition stays strong in Punky Brewster even as the series paints the world in primary colors for a young audience.
Gaynes's autumnal Henry is the gruff-but-lovable loner who discovers 8-year-old, abandoned Punky (Soleil Moon Frye) squatting with her golden lab puppy, Brandon, in an empty apartment across from his own. With great reluctance, Henry allows the loquacious, spunky Punky to stay with him until she's situated with Chicago's youth services, then misses her the moment she's gone. After a cute showdown with officials in court (Punky cracks wise atop the judge's desk), Henry and his moppet become a family, and the series explores the many ways in which the duo (well, Henry, actually) learns to accommodate a shared life. In "Punky Gets Her Own Room," the impetuous heroine turns Henry's dusty study into a brightly painted bedroom, much to her new dad's shock. "Parents Night" finds Henry annoyed that he's supposed to show up at his charge's school when he'd rather be working. Punky Brewster's initial 22 episodes wisely allowed the core relationship between man and girl to settle before introducing other significant characters and story threads. By the season's middle, however, other relationships and conflicts develop, including a romance for Henry and trouble with bullies at school. It's all good, family entertainment that doesn't condescend.

Punky Brewsters' first season from 1984 on NBC was a Sunday night hit - and this box set features all 23 episodes!
Punky Brewster: Season One proves the old, family-friendly sitcom is as captivating for kids today as it was in 1984. Somewhere in the tradition of Silas Marner and Chaplin's The Kid, Punky Brewster breathes new life in the story of an isolated bachelor who takes in a lost and forgotten child. Thanks to the inspired casting of Helsinki-born, journeyman actor George Gaynes (The Crucible) as misanthropic photographer-turned-foster dad Henry Warnimont, the tradition stays strong in Punky Brewster even as the series paints the world in primary colors for a young audience.
Gaynes's autumnal Henry is the gruff-but-lovable loner who discovers 8-year-old, abandoned Punky (Soleil Moon Frye) squatting with her golden lab puppy, Brandon, in an empty apartment across from his own. With great reluctance, Henry allows the loquacious, spunky Punky to stay with him until she's situated with Chicago's youth services, then misses her the moment she's gone. After a cute showdown with officials in court (Punky cracks wise atop the judge's desk), Henry and his moppet become a family, and the series explores the many ways in which the duo (well, Henry, actually) learns to accommodate a shared life. In "Punky Gets Her Own Room," the impetuous heroine turns Henry's dusty study into a brightly painted bedroom, much to her new dad's shock. "Parents Night" finds Henry annoyed that he's supposed to show up at his charge's school when he'd rather be working. Punky Brewster's initial 22 episodes wisely allowed the core relationship between man and girl to settle before introducing other significant characters and story threads. By the season's middle, however, other relationships and conflicts develop, including a romance for Henry and trouble with bullies at school. It's all good, family entertainment that doesn't condescend.

The Blob (1988) Meg Penny is a cheerleader out on her first date with one of the football players, Paul Taylor. It doesn't go very well. Before they get where they're going, an old vagrant runs out in front of Paul's car, screaming in terror. The old man is closely followed by Brian Flagg, the local teen rebel, complete with long hair, black leather jacket, motorcycle and tough-guy attitude. Paul blames Brian for chasing the old man, but after the threesome takes him to the doctor's office it becomes clear the vagrant had more to worry about than some young tough. He was screaming because of the acid-like substance on his hand - a substance that spreads over his body and eventually consumes him. Soon, the growing red blob, which sprouts tentacles to attack its victims, becomes a menace to the small town of Arbeville, Colorado. The military soon arrives in Hazmat suits, led by the wide-eyed Dr. Meddows. They're from the government, they say, and they want to help; but Brian's distrust for authority figures proves justified when he learns of their true motives.

New rules enforced by the Lady Mayoress mean that sex, weight, height and intelligence need no longer be a factor for joining the Police Force. This opens the floodgates for all and sundry to enter the Police Academy, much to the chagrin of the instructors. Not everyone is there through choice, though. Social misfit Mahoney has been forced to sign up as the only alternative to a jail sentence and it doesn't take long before he falls foul of the boorish Lieutenant Harris. But before long, Mahoney realises that he is enjoying being a police cadet and decides he wants to stay... while Harris decides he wants Mahoney out!

Character actor George Gaynes, known for his work on the TV show Punky Brewster and in films like Tootsie and Police Academy, has died. He was 98 and his daughter, Iya Gaynes Falcone Brown, confirmed the news, the New York Times reports.
Gaynes was born in Helsinki, Finland, on May 16, 1917, and arrived in New York following his service in World War II. Gaynes first worked in opera and on Broadway before focusing on on-screen roles. He worked steadily during the ’60s and ’70s on sitcoms, dramas and soap operas but achieved the peak of his celebrity in the mid-’80s, when he was in his 60s, with Police Academy and his Punky Brewster role as Henry Warnimont, a gruff apartment manager who becomes the foster parent to a young girl.
“I’m too old, I’ve been at it too long, to be exhilarated,” he said in 1984 of his late success. “Of course I’m happy about it. My wife is happy, because we can travel more, and she can get a new couch cover. But knowing the vagaries of the entertainment business, I can’t take it too seriously.”

George Gaynes, who portrayed an irritable foster parent on the '80s sitcom "Punky Brewster," the bewildered commandant in seven "Police Academy" films and a soap opera star with a crush on Dorothy Michaels, whom he doesn't know is Dustin Hoffman's character in drag, in the hit feature comedy "Tootsie," died on Monday in North Bend, Wash. He was 98.
His death was confirmed by his daughter, Iya Gaynes Falcone Brown, according to the New York Times.
Gaynes, who was not only a character actor but a baritone singer, made hundreds of appearances both on TV comedies and dramas, as well as 35 films (counting both features and and made-for-TV movies) and many plays, musical comedies and even operas in the U.S. and Europe.
While Gaynes became immediately recognizable to TV viewers and filmgoers, he never achieved name recognition, let alone stardom.
On "Punky Brewster," Gaynes played building manager Henry Warnimont, who finds an abandoned girl (Soleil Moon Frye) and becomes her foster parent and eventually her adoptive father. The sweet relationship between the two of them was the heart of the show.
The actor got the part after two of his most memorable big-screen performances: in 1982's "Tootsie," and in 1984's first entry in the long-running "Police Academy" franchise. (He appeared in all seven of the movies.)
George Jongejans was born in Helsinki to a Russian mother and Dutch father. Actor Gregory Gaye, who played a Nazi official in "Casablanca," was an uncle.
Young George was raised in France, England and Switzerland. World War II interrupted his burgeoning opera career. He was interned in Spain for three months; after his release, he traveled to the U.K. and enlisted in the Royal Dutch Navy.
After the war he went to New York, where he joined the New York City Opera. But he considered himself more an actor than a singer.
He changed his last name to Gaynes and guested on TV series including "The Defenders," "Mission: Impossible," "Bonanza," "Mannix," "Hogan's Heroes," "The Six Million Dollar Man," "Hawaii Five-0" and "Chicago Hope." In addition he appeared on the daytime soaps "General Hospital" and "Search for Tomorrow." Film credits included "The Way We Were," "Altered States" and "Wag the Dog."

Gaynes was born George Jongejans in Helsinki in 1917 to a Russian artist mother and Dutch businessman father. At the war's end, he headed to America, where he performed with the New York City Opera, as well as Broadway, where he joined the cast of 1950's Out of This World.
1953 was a momentous year for him. He was cast in Leonard Bernstein's Wonderful Town, changed his last name to Gaynes and married actress Allyn Ann McLerie, with whom he spent the rest of his life.
