OCTOBER 19 -- The latest delay in the trial of Dominic Whilby, who caused the death of Bus Operator William Pena, took place today in Manhattan Criminal Court. Pena’s widow, Nancy Rodriguez, attorney Sanford Rubenstein, and supporters from TWU Local 100 were on hand to hear Judge Gregory Carro announce that the trial would begin early next year. In the interim, the defense has asked for evidence to be submitted to a toxicologist for analysis, and that should happen next month. Outside court, Nancy was sorrowful at the long delay and adamant that she will oppose any plea deal for her husband’s killer.

Committee Summary:
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is one of the most hotly debated international legal institutions. Effective this year, Palestine's membership to this war-crimes tribunal opens the door to indictments against non-member Israel. While the full extent of the ramifications are uncertain, Palestine's new membership also makes it vulnerable to charges. This committee faces the daunting challenge of tackling the divisive Israeli-Palestinian conflict, while simultaneously reestablishing the overall effectiveness of the court. If delegates respond to the conflicts well, perhaps a peace treaty will take effect. But failure to maintain an unbiased perspective while conducting investigations and addressing the implications for all parties could result in an international disaster and chaos within the court itself.

Lawrence Ben-Eliezer graduated from the University of Calgary Faculty of Law in 1987 and was called to the Bar in Ontario in March 1989. He has been in private practice since that time and concentrated his practice in the fields of criminal defence and civil litigation.
Lawrence has appeared before every level of court in Ontario, including the Court of Appeal. He has defended individuals charged with a wide variety of offences, including allegations of domestic violence and sexual misconduct.
He is also a regular member of the Legal Panel on the John Oakley Show and can be heard every Wednesday morning on Talk Radio AM640.
Lawrence is a strong advocate of the rule of law and a principled approach to the administration of justice. He believes that politics should be kept away from the courtroom and that society should insist that those who are charged with criminal offences are entitled to a fair trial that is free from the effects of institutionalized biases.
