Richard Henry Lee (January 20, 1732 – June 19, 1794) was an American statesman from Virginia best known for the motion in the Second Continental Congress calling for the colonies' independence from Great Britain. He was a signatory to the Articles of Confederation and his famous resolution of June 1776 led to the United States Declaration of Independence, which Lee signed. He also served a one-year term as the President of the Continental Congress, and was a U.S. Senator from Virginia from 1789 to 1792, serving during part of that time as one of the first Presidents pro tempore of the United States Senate. He was also the great uncle of famous Confederate general Robert E. Lee.
Lee was born in Westmoreland County to Thomas Lee and Hannah Harrison Ludwell Lee on January 20, 1732. In 1748, at age sixteen, Lee left Virginia for Yorkshire, England, to complete his formal education at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wakefield, England.
In 1757, Lee was appointed justice of the peace in Westmoreland County. In 1758 he was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses, where he met Patrick Henry. An early advocate of independence, Lee became one of the first to create Committees of Correspondence among the many independence-minded Americans in the various colonies. In 1766, almost ten years before the American Revolutionary War, Lee is credited with having authored the Westmoreland Resolution which was publicly signed by prominent landowners who met at Leedstown, Westmoreland County, Virginia on 27 Feb 1766. This resolution was signed by four brothers of George Washington as well as Gilbert Campbell.

Plot: To avoid interference from the royal governor of the colony and his marines, the Second Virginia Convention met in Richmond, Virginia on March 20, 1775 to discuss recent proceedings at the First Continental Congress. The meeting turned into a debate over whether or not to arm the colony to resist British forces whose numbers were steadily increasing in North America. Many members preferred to adopt conciliatory measures, but Patrick Henry delivered an impassioned speech, arguing Virginia needed a "well-regulated militia." It was imperative, he declared, that the colony be prepared to oppose King George III. He ended his oration with the phrase: "Give me liberty or give me death!" This documentary, filmed at site of the original convention, provides the historical context for the debates and recreates the most important speeches delivered during the meeting, concluding with Henry's famous address.

Plot: "Choosing Revolution" is the story of the Randolph household of Williamsburg. The Randolphs were prominent Virginians. Peyton Randolph was president of the First Continental Congress. His younger brother John was attorney general of Virginia. But as revolution approached, the two brothers found themselves on opposite sides of the political fence. "Choosing Revolution" tells the personal story of how the difficult decision to become a patriot or remain a loyalist affected the entire Randolph household, pitting brother against brother, father against son. The Randolph wives and daughters, constrained by the 18th century role of women, were expected to follow their men no matter how much it harmed their family. Even the Randolph slaves were thrown into confusion as they learned that they might be offered a choice that could lead to freedom.

Plot: The film version of the Broadway musical comedy of the same name. In the days leading up to July 4, 1776, Continental Congressmen John Adams and Benjamin Franklin coerce Thomas Jefferson into writing the Declaration of Independence as a delaying tactic as they try to persuade the American colonies to support a resolution on independence. As George Washington sends depressing messages describing one military disaster after another, the businessmen, landowners and slave holders in Congress all stand in the way of the Declaration, and a single "nay" vote will forever end the question of independence. Large portions of spoken and sung dialog are taken directly from the letters and memoirs of the actual participants.

And stay all night with me
You won't find a girl in this damn world
That will compare with me
And the wind did howl and the wind did blow
La la la la la

A little bird lit down on Henry Lee
I can't get down and I won't get down
And stay all night with thee
For the girl I have in that merry green land
I love far better than thee

Just for a kiss or two
And with a little pen-knife held in her hand
She plugged him through and through

A little bird lit down on Henry Lee
Come take him by his lilly-white hands
Come take him by his feet
And throw him in the deep deep well
Which is more than one hundred feet
