Can financial crises and other disasters be prevented? What was the role of the Federal Reserve, regulation, and risk in past crises? In the pursuit of safety, are we creating the conditions for the next?
Wall Street Journal chief economics commentator Greg Ip and a panel of experts convened to discuss themes of the new book, Foolproof: Why Safety Can be Dangerous and How Danger Makes Us Safe.
In addition to Ip, panelists include Tyler Cowen, George Mason University Professor and General Director of the Mercatus Center; Jared Bernstein, former economic adviser to Vice President Joe Biden and Senior Fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities; and Alex J. Pollock, former CEO of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago and American Enterprise Institute resident fellow.
We have learned a staggering amount about human nature and disaster—yet we keep having car crashes, floods, and financial crises. Partly this is because the success we have at making life safer enables us to take bigger risks. As our cities, transport systems, and financial markets become more interconnected and complex, so does the potential for catastrophe. Drawing lessons from the US financial crisis, Europe’s sovereign debt crisis, sports, technology, and natural disasters, Foolproof explains how actions taken to prevent danger often cause a different sort to emerge in unexpected places.
Some of the topics Ip discusses are:
- How low inflation, stable growth and better regulated banks led to the U.S. mortgage crisis
- Whether the rules adopted since the crisis have made crises less, or more, likely
- Why aviation is so much safer than driving
- Why football has a concussion problem
- Why floods and forest fires are becoming more costly

Upcoming Washington D.C. Area Screenings:
January 7 - The Howard Theatre
February 13 - DCTV
March 1 - Busboys & Poets (14th st.)
March 16 - George Washington University
THE CLIP:
This is a preview of the first 2-minutes of The American LOWS (Legacy Of White Supremacy) , a docu-series produced by Darnley R. Hodge, Jr. The full length Series Preview will be released in 2016.
The series features interviews with:
Michael Steele, Roland Martin, Dr. Frances Cress Welsing, Jared Bernstein, Joe Madison, Hilary Shelton, Michael Eric Dyson, Runoko Rashidi and other prominent voices in politics, media, and sociology.
BACKGROUND:
After working for more than 15 years covering Washington D.C. politics and important news events all over the world, veteran photojournalist and editor, Darnley R. Hodge, Jr. decided to pursue a Master Degree in Producing for Film and Video at American University. It was there, while studying under the legendary british IMAX documentary filmmaker, Chris Palmer, that Darnley became inspired to create, as his master thesis, a documentary series that would address the root cause of the race issues faced by the worldwide African Diaspora, particularly in the United States. Suffice to say the project was a major undertaking. After months of research, study, and interviews, the project took on something of a life of its own, becoming something far above and beyond a University project. The American LOWS series is the result.
The series is a collection of interview-based documentaries that will examine the global system of racism/white supremacy and the evolution of that system in America. Interviewees include some of the nations top scholars, researchers, politicians, and authorities. Perhaps by understanding how today's racial dynamics are connected to the more overtly racist practices of the past, we can finally identify and rout out the most stubborn and illusive remaining residues from our deeply soiled national history.

Busboys and Poets Books presented Dean Baker, Director of Center for Economic and Policy Research, and Jared Bernstein, former economic adviser to Vice President Joe Biden, to discuss new book, Getting Back to Full Employment
While the media and politicians hype debt crises, the real American economic crisis is continuing, devastating, high unemployment. In addition to the millions who are unemployed, the weakness of the labor market has made it impossible for most workers to achieve real wage gains. As a result the benefits of the economic growth we have seen have gone overwhelmingly to the richest 1 percent.
In Getting Back to Full Employment, Jared Bernstein, formerly the Chief Economist and Economic Adviser to Vice President Joe Biden, and Dean Baker, one of the first economists to recognize and warn of the risks of the stock and housing bubbles, focus readers' attention where it should be: getting more Americans jobs. They show how the economic well-being of a large swath of American workers depends on the unemployment rate. Particularly in an era of historically high inequality, full employment would provide workers with the bargaining power needed to secure higher incomes and a fair share of the economy's growth.
Bernstein and Baker also point out another critical side effect of full employment: lower budget deficits and debt. In addition, they recommend policies to boost growth and get the unemployment rate down to a level where far more workers have a fighting chance of getting ahead.
