Violence denies millions of children across Iraq access to education according to last statics published by #UNICEF
The staggered start of the academic year in Iraq concludes this week with close to two million children nationwide out of school. An additional 1.2 million children age 5 to 14 years old are at risk of dropping out.
“The impact of conflict, violence and displacement on education in Iraq is nothing short of devastating,” said Peter Hawkins, UNICEF’s Representative in Iraq. “Large numbers of children – those in host communities, displaced from their homes, as well as refugee children from Syria – continue to experience significant disruptions to their education, putting Iraq at risk of losing an entire generation to conflict.”
Continuing violence has negatively impacted children’s access to education. Nearly one million children remain displaced, 70 per cent of whom have already lost an entire year of school.
More than 5,300 schools across the country – nearly one in five – cannot be used because they have been destroyed, damaged, converted to shelter for displaced families or used for military purposes by parties to the conflict. In the past year alone 67 attacks on schools and education personnel were reported. Of those schools that remain in use, thousands are overburdened, with class sizes reaching as high as 60 students, and operating in two or three shifts daily, which significantly reduces the amount of time children have to learn.
Meanwhile, teachers tell their own story of loss and survival. In northern Iraq, nearly 14,000 teachers have been forced to flee violence.

David Howell Petraeus AO (/pɨˈtreɪ.əs/; born November 7, 1952) is a retired American military officer and public official. He served as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from September 6, 2011, until his resignation on November 9, 2012. Prior to his assuming the directorship of the CIA, Petraeus was a highly decorated four-star general, serving over 37 years in the United States Army. His last assignments in the Army were as commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and Commander, U.S. Forces Afghanistan (USFOR-A) from July 4, 2010, to July 18, 2011. His other four-star assignments include serving as the 10th Commander, U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) from October 13, 2008, to June 30, 2010, and as Commanding General, Multi-National Force – Iraq (MNF-I) from February 10, 2007, to September 16, 2008. As commander of MNF-I, Petraeus oversaw all coalition forces in Iraq.
Petraeus has a B.S. degree from the United States Military Academy, from which he graduated in 1974 as a distinguished cadet (top 5% of his class). In his class were three other future four-star generals, Martin Dempsey, Walter L. Sharp and Keith B. Alexander. He was the General George C. Marshall Award winner as the top graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College class of 1983.[8] He subsequently earned an M.P.A. in 1985 and a Ph.D. degree in international relations in 1987 from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University. He later served as Assistant Professor of International Relations at the United States Military Academy and also completed a fellowship at Georgetown University.[9]
Petraeus has repeatedly stated that he has no plans to run for elected political office. On June 23, 2010, President Barack Obama nominated Petraeus to succeed General Stanley McChrystal as commanding general of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, technically a step down from his position as Commander of United States Central Command, which oversees the military efforts in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, and Egypt.
On June 30, 2011, Petraeus was unanimously confirmed as the next Director of the CIA by the U.S. Senate 94–0. Petraeus relinquished command of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan on July 18, 2011, and retired from the U.S. Army on August 31, 2011.[18] On November 9, 2012, General Petraeus resigned from his position as Director of the CIA, citing his extramarital affair which was reportedly discovered in the course of an FBI investigation.[19] In January 2015, officials reported the FBI and Justice Department prosecutors had recommended bringing felony charges against Petraeus for allegedly providing classified information to his mistress while serving as the director of the CIA. Eventually, Petraeus pled guilty to one misdemeanor charge of mishandling classified information.

Paula Dean Broadwell (née Kranz; born November 9, 1972[1]) is an American writer, academic and former military officer.[3][4] Broadwell is known for her role in the extramarital affair that ended the career of David Petraeus as the director of the CIA.[5][6][7] Broadwell sent anonymous threats to Dr. Scott Kelley and his wife Jill, a woman with military and diplomatic connections, who reported the threats to authorities.[8] The FBI investigation into Broadwell ultimately ended Petraeus' term as CIA director[7] and resulted in the revocation of Broadwell's security clearance.[7][9] Charges against Broadwell were dropped, but according to the Army, a separate investigation was launched after the discovery of unauthorized classified documents in Broadwell's possession during the initial FBI investigation.
