The Arabian Peninsula (Arabic: شبه الجزيرة العربية šibh al-jazīrat al-ʻarabīya or جزيرة العرب Ǧazīrat al 'Arab) is a land mass situated north-east of Africa. Also known as Arabia or the Arabian subcontinent, it is the world's largest peninsula and covers 3,237,500 km2 (1,250,000 mi2). The area is an important part of the Asian continent and plays a critical geopolitical role of the Middle East and Arab World due to its vast reserves of oil and natural gas. The peninsula formed as a result of the rifting of the Red Sea between 56-23 million years ago, and is bordered by the Red Sea to the west, the Persian Gulf to the northeast, and the Indian Ocean to the southeast.
The Arabian Peninsula is located in the Asia continent and bounded by (clockwise) the Persian Gulf on the northeast, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman on the east, the Arabian Sea on the southeast and south, the Gulf of Aden on the south, the Bab-el-Mandeb strait on the southwest, and the Red Sea on the southwest and west. The northern portion of the peninsula merges with the Syrian Desert with no clear border line, although the northern boundary of the Arabian Peninsula is generally considered to be the northern borders of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Early development
The period from the middle of the 2nd millennium BCE to the beginning of the Common Era saw societies in Western Asia, the Mediterranean, China and the Indian subcontinent develop major transportation networks for trade.
One of the vital instruments which facilitated long distance trade was portage and the domestication of beasts of burden. Organized caravans, visible by the 2nd millennium BCE, could carry goods across a large distance as fodder was mostly available along the way. The domestication of camels allowed Arabian nomads to control the long distance trade in spices and silk from the Far East to the Arabian Peninsula. Caravans were useful in long-distance trade largely for carrying luxury goods, the transportation of cheaper goods across large distances was not profitable for caravan operators. With productive developments in iron and bronze technologies, newer trade routes—dispensing innovations of civilizations—began to rise.
Maritime trade
Evidence of maritime trade between civilizations dates back at least two millennia. Navigation was known in Sumer between the 4th and the 3rd millennium BCE, and was probably known by the Indians and the Chinese people before the Sumerians. The Egyptians had trade routes through the Red Sea, importing spices from the "Land of Punt" (East Africa) and from Arabia.
Evolution of Indian trade networks. The main map shows the routes since Mughal times, Inset A shows the major prehistorical cultural currents, B: pre-Mauryan routes, C: Mauryan routes, D: routes c. 1st century CE, and E: the "Z" shaped region of developed roads.
Maritime trade began with safer coastal trade and evolved with the manipulation of the monsoon winds, soon resulting in trade crossing boundaries such as the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. South Asia had multiple maritime trade routes which connected it to Southeast Asia, thereby making the control of one route resulting in maritime monopoly difficult. Indian connections to various Southeast Asian states buffered it from blockages on other routes. By making use of the maritime trade routes, bulk commodity trade became possible for the Romans in the 2nd century BCE. A Roman trading vessel could span the Mediterranean in a month at one-sixtieth the cost of over-land routes.
Visible trade routes
The peninsula of Anatolia lay on the commercial land routes to Europe from Asia as well as the sea route from the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. Records from the 19th century BCE attest to the existence of an Assyrian merchant colony at Kanesh in Cappadocia (now in modern Turkey). Trading networks of the Old World included the Grand Trunk Road of India and the Incense Road of Arabia. A transportation network consisting of hard-surfaced highways, using concrete made from volcanic ash and lime, was built by the Romans as early as 312 BCE, during the times of the Censor Appius Claudius Caecus. Parts of the Mediterranean world, Roman Britain, Tigris-Euphrates river system and North Africa fell under the reach of this network at some point of their history.

The Republic Of Yemen covers a large part of the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula and contains several fascinating historical sites. East of Sanaa on the ancient Frankincense route, is the town of Marib that was once the residence of the legendary Queen Of Saba and in the extreme north is the town of Sadah, a region known for its powerful tribes. In the centre of the Djebel Harraz is the picturesque mountain village of Manakhah. Due to its location it was once a strategic point on the ancient trading route between the sea and the highlands. The breathtaking architecture of its buildings still testifies to the former prosperity of a village that today is well known for its popular market. Al Hudaydah was once the most important Turkish harbour on the Red Sea. The city was a commercial rival of the British occupied city of Aden to the south which, during colonial times, was of great importance in securing a sea route to India. In addition to the recent modernisation of the harbour the fishing industry still plays an important role and the fertile coastal waters of the Red Sea still ensure a good catch. To the south of Al Hudaydah is the legendary old harbour of Al Mokha, the former centre of the country’s coffee trade from which the world renowned Mocha coffee derived its name. Despite their present poverty the people here are a proud race and the ancient name of the Yemen, Arabia Felix, or “Arabia The Content”, is still a thing of the present.

The Hajar Mountains extend for almost six hundred kilometres from the Musandam Peninsula in the north to its eastern sections. They are also known as the Oman Mountains and divide the coast from the inland. Oman covers around three hundred thousand square kilometres and is one of the most sparsely settled countries in the world with only one and a half million inhabitants. Nizwa, the religious center of the Omans, has a moving past that manifests itself in the city’s defensive fortress. Until the 12th century it was the capital of the Desert State of Oman. Even today this oasis city and trading metropolis has lost none of its former importance. Al-Hamra is the name of a three hundred year old oasis village that dates back to the reign of Imam Saif Bin Sultan. At the end of the 17th century members of the Abriyin Tribe settled here the descendants of whom still live in the Jebal-Akhdar Mountains. Al-Hamra means ‘The Red One’, an Arabic name that is also to be found in the word ‘Alhambra’, in Spain’s Granada. The Sultanate Of Oman is a treasure trove of rarities. Peninsula Hot Springs are a unique and invigorating experience in the rolling hills of the Mornington Peninsula.
They source the mineral water from natural hot springs 637m below ground. This water comes out at a warm 50°C and then is cooled down to various temperatures between 37°C and 43°C so everyone can find a pool at a temperature that is comfortable for them.
The thermal waters in these pools are also full of minerals and are considered to have healing qualities for the body.
There are over 20 different styles of bathes and pools to choose from and you can even indulge in their private bathing area. We did that with a bottle of bubbly.
They even have a Hamam, Turkish Steam Room, where you can purchase the salts from reception and do the scrub amongst friends, or organise a group and have a therapist teach you what to do.
The bathes make the most of their natural surroundings so you don't feel like you are just walking in to public swimming pools, which a lot of thermal pools can feel like. They also empty the pools at the end of each day and fill them fresh each morning.
The ultimate indulgence though is visiting their Spa Dreaming Centre for any one of their signature treatments. I was taken u to their Arabian marquee (incredible by the way!) and enjoyed a massage, scrub and facial. This is seriously the most amazing day spa experience I have ever had.
They have so many packages to choose from and can organise a bathe and dine package and they can even organise accommodation at a close by hotel for you.

One of the mainland African species also occurs on Madagascar, but it is not a native of that island, and was introduced in ancient times to south Asia and during the colonial era to the Caribbean. It is also present in the island of Cape Verde.[2] The ninth species was described in 2012, incorporating upland populations of southern and eastern Africa.[3]
A typical common name is baobab. The generic name honours Michel Adanson, the French naturalist and explorer who described Adansonia digitata.
Adansonias reach heights of 5 to 30 m (16 to 98 ft) and have trunk diameters of 7 to 11 m (23 to 36 ft). The Glencoe baobab, a specimen of A. digitata in Limpopo Province, South Africa, was considered to be the largest living individual, with a maximum circumference of 47 m (154 ft)[4] and a diameter of about 15.9 m (52 ft). The tree has since split into two parts, so the widest individual trunk may now be that of the Sunland baobab, or Platland tree, also in South Africa. The diameter of this tree at ground level is 9.3 m (31 ft) and its circumference at breast height is 34 m (112 ft).[5]
Adansonia trees produce faint growth rings, probably annually, but they are not reliable for aging specimens, because they are difficult to count and may fade away as the wood ages. Radiocarbon dating has provided data on a few individuals. A specimen of A. digitata known as Grootboom was dated and found to be at least 1275 years old, making it among the oldest known angiosperm trees (but not as old as Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi).

In the 10th century A.D. the town reached the zenith of its prosperity. It is believed that almost a million people once lived in the ‘Mecca of the West’. The Great Mosque, today's Mezquita, was extended and enlarged during that time. Marble, jaspis and granite columns decorate the beautiful interior of the mosque that contains eight hundred columns. The old city of Granada extends across three hills, Sacromonte, the world famous Alhambra and Abaicín, a once densely populated Moorish district with almost thirty mosques. For several centuries around sixy thousand Moors brought the city’s maze of alleys to life but only a few of the historic Islamic buildings and mosques have survived. Seville is today’s pulsating capital of Andalucia and is still strongly influenced by the brilliant architectural achievements of the Moors. In former times the Real Alcázar was the residence of the region’s Arabic rulers but most of its buildings were constructed during the reign of Peter The Cruel. Along the Rio Guadalquivir is Córdoba. Today the former caliph’s residence of the Omaiyad is a lively city with an historic past. Later the town became the capital of the province of Baetica, the hot southern region of Spain. At the beginning of the 8th century the town was the headquarters of its recent conquerors, Arabian governors and emirs and even today the architectural influence of the Moors is visible. In the 10th century A.D. the town reached the zenith of its prosperity. It is believed that almost a million people once lived in the ‘Mecca of the West’. The Great Mosque, today's Mezquita, was extended and enlarged during that time. Marble, jaspis and granite columns decorate the beautiful interior of the mosque that contains eight hundred columns. The old city of Granada extends across three hills, Sacromonte, the world famous Alhambra and Abaicín, a once densely populated Moorish district with almost thirty mosques. For several centuries around sixy thousand Moors brought the city’s maze of alleys to life but only a few of the historic Islamic buildings and mosques have survived. Seville is today’s pulsating capital of Andalucia and is still strongly influenced by the brilliant architectural achievements of the Moors. In former times the Real Alcázar was the residence of the region’s Arabic rulers but most of its buildings were constructed during the reign of Peter The Cruel. Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia and its largest city. It is also the capital of Riyadh Province, and belongs to the historical regions of Nejd and Al-Yamama. It is situated in the center of the Arabian Peninsula on a large plateau, and is home to over 4,260,000 people.
The city is divided into 15 municipal districts, managed by Riyadh Municipality headed by the mayor of Riyadh, and the Riyadh Development Authority, chaired by the Governor of Riyadh Province, Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz.
The current mayor of Riyadh is Abdul Aziz ibn Ayyaf Al Migrin, appointed in 1998.
