Richie McCaw's apparent elbow to Francois Louw's head

All Blacks captain Richie McCaw could be cited for elbowing South African flanker Francois Louw in New Zealand's 20-18 win. However if you look closely at the incident it's his hip not his elbow which makes contact.

London: Richie McCaw could miss the World Cup final if he is deemed to have deliberately elbowed Francois Louw in New Zealand's 20-18 victory over South Africa.

The All Blacks captain struck Louw on the forehead 20 minutes into Saturday's last four showdown at Twickenham, sending the openside flanker reeling with a blow that is sure to interest the citing officer.

Louw finished the match with two wounds to his forehead requiring a total of 20 stitches. When asked how he incurred the cuts, the Bath flanker said: "I'm not sure, I think it was at the bottom of a ruck".

Striking with the elbow - which falls under law 10.4a of dangerous play and misconduct - has a low end sanction of a two-week suspension.

The citing officer has up to 36 hours after the match has ended to lodge a complaint, setting 6am on Monday (local time) as the deadline.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen praised the performance of McCaw and his senior players after the title holders fought back from a 12-7 halftime deficit in their Twickenham semi-final as indiscipline allowed Springbok five-eighth Handre Pollard to kick four penalties.

"I was really proud of the composure our guys showed to come back out (in the second half) and get a little bit of ascendancy," Hansen said.

"Experience allows that to happen. We've probably got the best skipper and player in the world," he said of McCaw, who won his 147th cap.

"It's ironic, in 2007 he was criticised a lot and I know that hurt him. His leadership skills have grown, our leadership group on the pitch have a massive amount of self belief."

McCaw led the New Zealand side beaten by France in the Cardiff quarter-final in 2007 before the All Blacks won their second title at home four years later.

Dan Carter, who surpassed Grant Fox as New Zealand's top World Cup points scorer by taking his tally to 172 on Saturday, won his 111th cap, Ma'a Nonu his 102nd and fellow centre Conrad Smith his 93rd, number eight Kieran Read his 83rd and replacement hooker Keven Mealamu took his tally to 131.

"We've had moments, one obvious one against Ireland, when we have to keep that self belief," Hansen said.

Ireland were on the verge of ending New Zealand's run of successive wins in a calendar year in Dublin in November 2013 at 13 tests before a last-gasp try put the scores level and Aaron Cruden converted at the second attempt for a remarkable 24-22 victory.

Hansen said the accumulated experience of a team with several players with more than 100 caps was crucial in seeing New Zealand pin South Africa back in the second half on Saturday and finally take the lead they would never relinquish with their second try.

"So it's about that process, 'what do we do now? If we get that right, what do we do next?'" Hansen said of game-saving decisions made by his leading players.

    • McCaw penalised for foul play? Pigs might fly, I'd say the referees would even give him a character reference so

    • Still have not seen the offence or any evidence head wound was caused by McGaw. I am happy to bag the bloke but this is a beat-up of the highest order.

    • It's a curious line to run as it puts McCaw behind the play in an offside position but given that's where he is most comfortable I doubt it will get a citing. Very hard to prove even carelessness.

    • I just noticed that as McCaw runs past his elbow goes from being tucked in to his side to extending on a 30 degree angle to make contact with Louw's head and shoulder. That raises this from accidental to deliberate. This could be a very real problem for the All Blacks.

    • They have been specifically tough at this RWC on any illegality. More than ever before, though you could argue harder on tier 2 countries.
The 3 weeks for kneeing to the Samoa player running WITH the ball was crazy. Looking at this vision you'd think he would at least be cited, get penalised, appeal, and probably get off.
McCaw has driven us all mad for over a decade with his offside play etc., but more because he really is outstanding, and over an incredible stretch of time. We would have loved him to be an Aussie.
For our chances I want him out, but for an amazing, unparalleled career, he should be able to play.
      Could be iffy.

    • If he hits Louw in the head it must be at the back of the head; Louw spins around when his shoulder catches Richie's hip. The 3news video seems to me to make it clearer that the contact is Louw's shoulder to Richie's hip.

And, this time Richie is about on the line of the last All Blacks player in the rucks feet as the ball is pulled out so really not offside. The line across the field is running from top right to bottom left in the video at about 30 degrees to the bottom of the video.

I do think that in some instances the refs are a bit lenient on the All Blacks, but this happens to the best in a lot of sports. I think people need to get over that the All Blacks play to the edge of the law, like Scotsmen should get over the penalty at the end of the 1/4 final; this sort of stuff happens for and against everyone from time to time. I think people complaining about the All Blacks getting away with stuff is coz those people don't have anything else and are envious of ABs success; best of luck for the future to them.

Looking forward to an ANZAC final with the All Blacks just winning, but Argentina would be worthy finalists as well. I am tad annoyed I did not make it to the world cup, but have been watching on TV; and look forward to the S18 and Rugby Championship next year. We of the Southern Hemisphere are lucky to have a world cup each year for the next 4; whether you support ABs, WABs, Boks or Pumas. My biggest frustration is not getting more people to rugby in Sydney.

    • Watch this video, then anyone bashing McCaw can promptly be quiet.

kp "Noticed his elbow went to 30o to hit" is totally laughable after watching.

    • The whining noise once again from across the Tasman is the fans wrongly accusing King Richie of wrong doings. Please open both eyes and see it's McCaw's hip that hits the player.. No more excuses Oz, you guys are good enough for 4th.
