Welcome to Belfast Castle, a striking former home perched atop the rolling green hills of Cavehill County Park.
When you tour Belfast Castle, you’ll learn that the structure is actually the third castle to bear that moniker. The original Belfast Castle was constructed by the Normans in the 12th century; Sir Arthur Chichester built a replacement over its bones in the 1600s. That building burned down in 1708, and this version did not begin construction until 1811. It took over 60 years to finish the third incarnation of Belfast Castle, with the final bricks being laid in 1870.
Anyone sightseeing at Belfast Castle will notice its striking sandstone walls, which give the castle its distinctive reddish-brown hue. Meander through the quiet, peaceful gardens, and stop to snap some photos of downtown Belfast and the stunning Belfast Lough. Enjoy a meal at the restaurant, or just share a quiet cup of tea with some traveling companions.
After a day of tourism at Belfast Castle, head into Belfast proper for a pint at a pub, or wander through the art collections at Ulster Museum. Don’t forget to spend a few hours in the Botanic Gardens, which are sure to dazzle you.

Three decades of sectarian violence in Belfast had traditionally served to keep the tourists away.
But now it seems the legacy of those very troubles may in fact be Northern Ireland's main attraction.
Tour guides are catering to tourist demands to see the sites that for so long dominated television news.
And some residents are even turning their homes into bed & breakfasts to cash in on the new tourist boom.
Shankhill Road - Belfast's Protestant area and domain of the Ulster Loyalist paramilitaries.
For nearly three decades, sectarian killings and violence deterred even the most adventurous tourist.
But since the ceasefire, the number of visitors venturing to Northern Ireland has increased.
Many seem to be keen to witness the scenes where much of the trouble that kept them away for so long took place.
Northern Ireland is renowned for its spectacular coastline, but some tourists are looking for something that only Belfast can offer.
George Grimley is one bus driver who operates tours to bring tourists to some of the city's infamous hot spots.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Well, Belfast unfortunately, having the history that it has, you'll find a lot of the tourists want to go into the areas that they've seen on their televisions over the years. So our aim is to bring the tourists into that area and give an unbiased view of both sides."
SUPER CAPTION: George Grimley, bus driver and tour operator
The twice-weekly bus tours of the Catholic and Protestant areas have become a must-see and are even recommended in travel guide books.
The tourists seem to enjoy the drive through some of Belfast's notorious areas.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"To actually drive down there and see the way these people live, it's just crazy living behind barbed wire and bricks."
SUPER CAPTION: David Edwards, Australian tourist
VOXPOP: (English)
"It's just chilling to think of all the people who have died here because of this conflict."
SUPER CAPTION: Jean Stewart, tourist from Denver, Colorado, U-S
Taxi drivers have also been cashing in, offering more individualised tours.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"You can tell it's a Protestant area. You'll see all the pavements are painted red, white and blue."
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Johnston, taxi driver and tour guide
The murals around Belfast are becoming something of an art form.
Even so, the tours are not for the faint hearted since the sites mark the scenes of atrocities still very real to local residents.
On the site of this wallpaper shop in the Shankhill Road stood a fish shop which was bombed by the I-R-A in 1993.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"That was one of the worst bomb attacks on the Shankhill Road, a lot of women and kids were killed. An I-R-A man left the bomb on the floor."
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Johnston, taxi driver and tour guide
The Catholic-Republican area is only a stone's throw from the Shankhill Road.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"These are the famous peace gates between the Falls and the Shankhill and they separate both sides from rioting and fighting."
SUPER CAPTION: Michael Johnston, taxi driver and tour guide
Milltown Cemetery gained notoriety when it was the scene of a deadly shooting in 1988.
Loyalist paramilitary Michael Stone attacked and killed three mourners attending the funerals of three I-R-A members shot by the British military in Gibraltar.
Within the cemetery are plots dedicated to fallen Republicans, including those killed in Gibraltar.
There is also a plaque commemorating the death of Bobby Sands and other inmates of the Maze Prison who died while on hunger strike protesting for political rights.

http://www.wheelock.edu/academics/service-learning-and-study-abroad Each year, Wheelock students travel to Northern Ireland to work in and learn about a peace-building program designed to help preschoolers deal with the emotional fallout from years of violence in that nation. “Having a travel experience that is linked to service learning and course work creates a kind of profound learning opportunity that doesn’t happen just traveling,” says Diane Levin, Wheelock Professor of Early Childhood Education. Says Wheelock student Katrin Reeder, “We had learned about [conflicts in Northern Ireland] but it wasn’t until we actually to see it ourselves how much this conflict affected the children. We realized how big an issue it was and how much they needed this help.” Levin says her students are able to really engage with children in the classrooms and develop skills they can take back to their own classrooms. Wheelock student Erin Forgay says the trip has already changed the way she interacts with her students back in Boston: “If you take the time and show kids how to properly master a skill, they can do it themselves. This course really helped delve into those issues.”

Northern Ireland is today a constitutionally distinct region of the United Kingdom. Its story is sad, yet promising, confusing, and understandable.
The last Ice Age melted away some 10,000 years ago. The dramatic result created the English Channel, Irish Sea and hundreds of rivers and lakes. Great Britain and Ireland (long attached to the European continent) were now islands, and cultural history was about to change.
The Celtic people occupied great stretches of land across central Europe by 500 BC. They first arrived in Ireland around 300 BC, subsequently controlling and influencing this land that the powerful Roman culture never reached.
The Pope in Rome (Celestinus the First) sent the first Christian missionaries to Ireland in the 5th century, including St. Patrick. The Catholic faith spread rapidly, and by the turn of the century abbeys and monasteries were beacons of hope across Ireland.
This somewhat peaceful Celtic world was first invaded by the Vikings in the late 8th century. Their overpowering raids of monasteries and villages continued through the 10th century, and they eventually built permanent power base settlements at Cork, Dublin and Waterford.
Localized fighting over land and property continued for decades, but over time, some Celtic family groups and Vikings reached alliances - sort of a workable, live together understanding. That ended when the Irish King Brian Boru defeated the Danish Vikings in 1014.
In 1169, aggressive English and Norman forces crossed the Irish Sea; Dublin (a Viking stronghold) and other cities quickly fell, and the all-powerful Pope in Rome declared that Henry II (the English King) was now the "Lord of Ireland." As you can imagine, that didn't sit very well with the locals.
Centuries of conflicts and localized wars continued, and finally, the embattled Irish chiefs were forced to retreat into the northern province of Ulster (parts of which are now Northern Ireland). By 1607, most, if not all, would flee this land and the English saw an opening.
They quickly instigated a policy called 'plantation,' where waves of Scottish and English Protestants literally took the available land from the now weakened Catholics, laying the groundwork for the strongly-held differences and bitterness that remain to this day.
Understandably, the now angry and proud Celts rebelled, and bloody riots soon followed. Then, after the native Irish supported the losing side in England's Civil War, the worst for Ireland was yet to come.

De...
An unusual and controversial perspective on the Ulster Scots language and culture in a one hour documentary film, directed by an Irish language activist.
Deaglán Ó Mocháin's film, The Hamely Tongue -- Cultúr Ceilte (Hidden Culture) on TG4 on Wednesday 20th January at 9.30pm, argues for a more nuanced perspective on Ulster Scots than the normal broad swipes at the language that prevail in the media or on web forums.
When the term 'Ulster Scots' is mentioned the default position is often humour -- that this is a Ballymena accent, 'Oor Willie' or 'the Broons' of Glasgow, and a series of made up words; or anger -- that this is a pretence, a vehicle to counter Irish, a financial scam, the language of the DUP.
Ó Mocháin's film argues for a more nuanced perspective on Ulster Scots by excavating an exciting and radical history -- the history of 1798 in the north, and the flowering of intellectual development associated with the enlightenment and the French and American revolutions.
At the core of this film is respect for the choices that people make in terms of their identity, an issue that is at the heart of modern day Irish language activism. One of the subjects of the film, musician and ethnomusicologist Gordon Ramsey, articulates this position in an interview where he says: "Ulster Scots identity can be viewed as an alternative to Irishness, but it can also be viewed as a particular way of being Irish, and for some Loyalists, Ulster Scots identity offers a way to be Irish on their own terms without having to accept any of the baggage of Nationalism that has sometimes been associated with Irishness"
Ulster Scots was, controversially, given language status, by the European Bureau of Lesser Used Languages, a respected body that operates to support and promote lesser used languages throughout Europe. They place Ulster Scots, and Irish, and dozens of other languages on a register of threatened voices. Ulster Scots was, again somewhat controversially, formally recognised as deserving of special support within the Belfast Agreement in 1998. This Agreement was widely endorsed in an All Ireland referendum in the summer of 1998.
The film, Cultúr Ceilte, follows narrator, Seimí MacAindreasa, a native Irish speaker from Belfast, on a journey through modern day Ulster Scots. Some of the people he meets are long standing activists, and have been preserving and promoting the language for years -- recording older members of their community, translating the bible, encouraging people to take an interest in traditional music. Others are new to the concept, and are slowly working through their relationship to the language and culture.
MacAindreasa talks to historians and academics about James Orr, one of the 'weaver poets', as John Hewitt described them -- working class intellectuals who wrote in Scots and who were often of a radical nature. Orr was a United Irishman, a section leader under the command of Henry Joy McCracken, and was forced into a period of exile after the Battle of Antrim in 1798. His work is viewed as being on a par with that master of Scots verse, Robbie Burns.
MacAindreasa also goes on to meet the modern day Orr -- James Fenton, a retired schoolmaster and the author of 'The Hamely Tongue' - a compilation of Ulster Scots words and phrases gathered over thirty years. This is widely viewed as an exemplary piece of work, recording the core aspects of a language in rapid decline. James also writes poetry in his mother tongue, and three of these are featured throughout the programme.
Director, Ó Mocháin's perspective is that people have the right to define themselves in a manner of their own choosing, and should be supported in those choices. Ulster Scots may be a language in decline, but to those who express an interest in multi-culturalism, and who support the preservation of minority cultures, he believes that this should act as a motivating factor to ensure that Ulster Scots is properly supported and nurtured. The first act in this supporting and nurturing has to be a greater understanding and awareness of the multi-faceted nature of modern Ulster Scots.
The Hamely Tongue - Cultúr Ceilte is a Soilsiú Films production for TG4, made with the support of The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (Sound & Vision), Foras na Gaeilge and The Ulster-Scots Agency.
