He later earned a BS in entomology at Ohio State and went on to an academic career that led him to a post as dean of Penn State University's College of Agricultural Sciences. He returned to Ohio State in 2012 as dean of the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and soon after became part of strategic-planning efforts for the college.
