After many years as a dissident journalist, prisoner of conscience, and democracy activist, Mohamed Nasheed became the first democratically-elected President of the Maldives in 2008. As President, Nasheed used his position to strengthen democratic institutions in the Maldives, and as a platform to advocate for increased awareness of and action against global warming. He made global headlines by staging an underwater cabinet meeting, to highlight his low-lying country’s vulnerability to rising sea levels. He also set an example by outlining policy to make the Maldives carbon-neutral, transitioning from oil to solar power. His environmental efforts were chronicled in the acclaimed documentary The Island President. He was forced to resign in 2012, under the threat of personal violence against him in a coup d’etat. Despite winning a plurality of the vote in the country’s 2013 elections, the Supreme Court annulled the results, returning to power the same family which had ruled the Maldives for decades. Nasheed was convicted and sentenced to 13 years in prison on “terrorism” charges in March, stemming from the alleged wrongful detention of a judge by the Maldivian military while he was president. Amnesty International condemned the “sham trial,” and said the verdict was a “travesty of justice.” A small island nation in the Indian Ocean most known for tourism, the Maldives also holds great strategic economic and military importance because it straddles international shipping lanes. The country has traditionally been a key ally of India, but the current government has a strong relationship with China. China is reportedly seeking to build a naval base there to counterbalance India’s control of the Indian Ocean and the U.S. military presence in Diego Garcia. Nasheed, who attended university in the United Kingdom, is a lifelong advocate for freedom, democracy and human rights. The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is a multination organisation that comprises eight countries located in South Asia. SAARC is an economic organisation of which Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka are members. The SAARC was the talk of the town recently when Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited SAARC leaders to attend his swearing-in ceremony on May 26. The invitation was also extended to Pakistan to which its Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif readily accepted. India witnessed a historic ceremony as it was also dubbed to be a mini-SAARC Summit. Starting on November 26, the two-day SAARC Summit will be the 18th session of the multilateral organisation. Nepal will be holding the 18th SAARC meet as the national capital Kathmandu is all set to host neighbouring South-Asian countries. The current session is abuzz with the news of India-Pakistan relations. There are several facts and figures which one would like to know about the South Asian association. We would like to bring some facts about SAARC Summit in the light which will aptly describe the work, significance and importance of it. Look at the list below: 1. The motto of the SAARC organisation is ‘Deeper Integration for Peace and Prosperity’. 2. It will surprise many but the official language of SAARC organisation is English. 3. The headquarters of the SAARC association is not in India or Pakistan, but it situated in Kathmandu, Nepal. 4. Not many know that if the Gross Domestic Product (PPP) of these eight nations is combined, it will be the third highest economy in the world, behind United States of America and China. 5. The idea to develop SAARC was first initiated in the year 1980 but it took five years to contemplate it. The first SAARC summit was held in the year 1985 on December 8 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. 6. Initially the SAARC organisation comprised of only seven countries. Afghanistan was later added as new full member of the association during the 13th SAARC Summit held in Dhaka in April 2007. 7. India has have host the SAARC Summit for three times previously viz. in the year 1986, 1995 and 2007. Not many know that when India was at war with Pakistan in Kargil, 1999; Pakistan’s Prime Minister was none other than Nawaz Sharif. The Indo-Pak relations found a fresh lease of life when Narendra Modi invited Nawaz Sharif in his oath-taking ceremony. However, Pakistan being Pakistan, the relations soon soured when Pakistani authorities held talks with separatists in Kashmir. Well, it is for sure that the 18th SAARC Summit in Kathmandu, Nepal will be shadowed with Indo-Pak relations more than anything else. Thousands came by boat to the capital of the Maldives to protest on Friday against the arrest of former president Mohamed Nasheed and demand that current leader Abdulla Yameen resign. A reporter at the scene estimated the crowd at between 8,000 and 10,000 people. This is a short Bangkok Airways flight review of Bangkok Airways flight PG873 from Koh Samui Airport (USM) to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG). This is onboard (cabin view video footage of the flight seen from the perspective of a passenger flying in Bangkok Airways Economy Class and includes the takeoff from Ko Samui (Samui Airport) and also the landing at Hong Kong International Airport. This onboard cabin view trip report of our Bangkok Airways Economy Class flight begins at Koh Samui Airport at Bangkok Airway´s "Courtesy Corner". Bangkok Air describes themselves as Asia's Boutique Airline and pride themselves with providing a little bit extra fall all the passengers regardless of whether they are flying business class or economy class. Courtesy Corner is Bangkok Airs lounge for economy class passengers and provides a selection of free beverages (non alcoholic) and snacks, newspapers etc.for their passengers. After the Economy Lounge Area the video moves on to our departure Gate which was Gate 6. From this area we are transported in tram-like vehicles to our waiting aircraft. Our aircraft was an Airbus A319 with flight registration HS-PGY. Before take off a Bangkok Air ATR-72 can be seen getting her "pushback" prior to departure. We then follow our aircraft's own take off over Bang Rak (The Big Buddha side of the Island). As the flaps are folded away our flight to Hong Kong begins. Shortly after takeoff we are presented with a nice selection of drinks and a light dinner. All drinks served onboard this Bangkok Airways Economy class flight where free for all passengers (including alcoholic drinks). The in-flight meal was a delicious potato salad, a Massaman Curry and a lovely piece of cheesecake for dessert and of course the obligatory bun which is included on all inflight meals. The stewardess provided us with complimentary headphones so that we called watch the inflight movie or listen to music. There was not any in flight entertainment system on this aircraft so passengers could watch the cabin monitors which folded out above their heads in the cabin The movie played on our particular flight was "Rio 2". After dinner the evening begins to creep in more and more and it begins to become darker and more cloudy as we fly over Vietnam where the Summer Monsoon is currently active. Watch out for the large clouds and lightning as we fly over Vietnam. This flight review footage then shows our final approach towards Hong Kong International Airport with a few views of Hong Kong City. After landing we follow the full and rather long taxi of the aircraft to its gate at "North Satellite Concourse". The video ends with the passengers disembarkation of Bangkok Airways Flight PG873 to Hong Kong. This was a superb flight managed by a highly competent excellent and friendly cabin crew! The flight crew was also fantastic, and we had the pleasure to have a chat with the captain on the way to the arrivals terminal in the bus. This Boutique Airline is fantastic and I would choose to fly with this airline anytime..... as long as the level of service is always the same as they offer now. This is a flight review of our Brussels Airlines Economy Class flight from Copenhagen Airport (CPH) to Brussels Airport (BRU) onboard a Brussels Airlines Airbus A319. Our journey begins at the Copenhagen Airport Hilton Hotel where we are having breakfast as we have spent the night at the hotel in order to be able to catch our very early flight to Brussels. The footage then continues to Terminal 2 where we have just checked in for our flight. We then find ourselves in the Duty Free shopping area of the airport after passing security. We then proceed on to the restaurant "Viewing Area" of the airport (a tradition when we fly) before moving on to the Wing A gates from where our flight will be departing. The viewer then follows us on our walk down through wing A to our Gate where we get a view of our aircraft an Airbus A319-112 before boarding it. The viewer then gets some views of the cabin, taxiing, takeoff and landing. We did not receive any complimentary beverages or snacks on this flight, however there was an inflight food and drink menu available with a good selection of drinks and beverages available at reasonable prices (at least in our opinion). The flight was a standard pleasant European short-haul flight with a friendly and professional crew. We would not have a problem flying with this airline again in the future, although if we had a choice to fly with an airline that offers a complimentary beverage, we would choose that one. This is one those countries that have always been painted as a luxury destination for the well to do. For a long time it was a country I never considered precisely because of that image. One day, I started doing some research for the fun of it, and to my surprise found that it is very possible. Though the information online and the market for backpackers or budget travellers is still largely unheard of in the the world, that is only because it is a relatively new thing in Maldives. It is growing quickly by the day. Here's some information to add on to the that. Hope it's useful! Accommodation - There are cheap options like guest houses on local islands. For those who want to save even more, try couch surfing, but send requests months before as it is a destination with lots of surf requests but few hosts. Another option is to stay in the rental housings for the locals, I've seen a few those while travelling around in the city. On other islands, guest houses would probably be the cheapest. Contact the guest house owners directly, they will be able to give you better prices and deals. Getting around - Hitching rides. Ask! (You see me free riding in the video, the motorbike, the lorry, and even the boat with the photographer) On the airport island, Hulhumale, use local buses or rent a taxi (costlier option). In Male city, Walk! The whole place takes 2 hours to check out. If not, you can try renting a motorbike at the garages or ask the hotel receptions. Taxis are reasonably priced in the city (2USD) and cost the same to get anywhere in the city. Getting to resort islands. Unfortunately access to this islands are exclusively by resort boats/speed boats which is a hole to your pocket. Getting to local islands. Take the public ferries, be sure to check their schedules, ask guesthouse owners about it. A lot of them are not daily services. NOTE** Friday is a public holiday for prayers in Maldives. A lot of the local ferries and public services and shops are not operating. However, hotels, hotel restaurants & cafes, resort boats & airport boats still operate. Plan your trip accordingly! Eating - Go where the locals eat! Ask them where they like to eat, or ask them where to get cheap food (aka not hotel cafes & restaurants). A cheap place in Male city with the looks of a proper restaurant is the restaurant at the hospital. For some reason, that is the only place that sells beer other than the resort hotels and airport hotels. Funny. *Alcohol is prohibited in most of Maldive as it is a muslim country. **Vegetarians, you guys will be able to survive here,You can get fruits and maybe even vegetables at the grocery stores. When eating out, you can always request for a vegetarian version of a meal, or just opt for vegetable curry and rice. It is quite delicious. I managed that way, just ask! Activities - If you are staying with a guesthouse, chances are that they already have deals for you. Activities that can be done are island hopping, snorkelling or scuba diving at different spots (for sharks, corals, manta rays, rays, tropical fishes..), fishing & more. If you have to look for your own activities, check out the local shops and get the best prices. It will always be cheaper if you can get more people to join you. Additional tips - Change about 70-100USD worth of local currency, Maldivian Rufias. You can still pay in USD if you want, but paying in local currencies saves you a bit in the long run. Local ferries, local eateries, local grocery stores and shops. Remember to keep the receipt so that you can change it back at the end of the trip. Best place to change will be at the airport. Didn't see any other money changers elsewhere on the trip. Some beaches will not allow bikini wearing, check with the locals or go to a private or bikini beach. Some beaches on the picnic islands allow bikinis. Take note that some days, those picnic island beaches may just be open for locals only. Pick up some local greetings. Equivalent of hello - AS SALAM ALE KUM Equivalent of thank you - SHO KREE YA Have fun! Enjoy the country and its unique culture, the beautiful beaches & rich oceans.

This is my first ever video I shot and edited myself. I used the Canon 7D Mark II, Sony DSC-HX50 and GoPro Hero 3+. I edited the video with GoPro Studio. The islands gained independence from the British Empire in 1965, and in 1968 became a republic ruled by a president and an authoritarian government. The archipelago is located atop the Chagos-Maldives-Laccadive Ridge, a vast submarine mountain range in the Indian Ocean, which also forms a terrestrial ecoregion together with the Chagos and the Lakshadweep.[13] Their atolls encompass a territory spread over roughly 90,000 square kilometres (35,000 sq mi), making the country one of the world's most geographically dispersed. Its population of 328,536 (2012) inhabits 192 of its 1,192 islands.[14] In 2006 the capital and largest city Malé, located at the southern edge of North Malé Atoll, had a population of 103,693.[15][16] Malé is one of the Maldives' administrative divisions and, traditionally, it was the "King's Island" where the ancient royal dynasties were enthroned. It is the smallest Asian country in both population and land area. With an average ground level elevation of 1.5 metres (4 ft 11 in) above sea level, it is the planet's lowest country.[17] It is also the country with the lowest natural highest point in the world, at 2.4 metres (7 ft 10 in).[17] Future inundation of the Maldives due to rising sea levels is of great concern to its people, motivating the government to pledge becoming a carbon-neutral country by 2019.[18]

THE MALDIVES WORLD TRAVEL GUIDE Discovery Tourism Vacation Maldives, officially the Republic of Maldives,[nb 1] is an island nation in the Indian Ocean–Arabian Sea area, consisting of a double chain of twenty-six atolls, oriented north-south, that lie between Minicoy Island (the southernmost part of Lakshadweep, India) and the Chagos Archipelago. The chains stand in the Laccadive Sea, and the capital, Malé, is about 600 kilometres (370 mi) south-west of India and 750 kilometres (470 mi) south-west of Sri Lanka. From the mid-sixteenth century, the Maldives was dominated by colonial powers: Portugal, the Netherlands and Britain. The islands gained independence from the British Empire in 1965, and in 1968 became a republic ruled by a president and an authoritarian government. The archipelago is located atop the Chagos-Maldives-Laccadive Ridge, a vast submarine mountain range in the Indian Ocean, which also forms a terrestrial ecoregion together with the Chagos and the Lakshadweep. Their atolls encompass a territory spread over roughly 90,000 square kilometres (35,000 sq mi), making the country one of the world's most geographically dispersed. Its population of 328,536 (2012) inhabits 192 of its 1,192 islands. In 2006 the capital and largest city Malé, located at the southern edge of North Malé Atoll, had a population of 103,693. Malé is one of the Maldives' administrative divisions and, traditionally, it was the "King's Island" where the ancient royal dynasties were enthroned. It is the smallest Asian country in both population and land area. With an average ground level elevation of 1.5 metres (4 ft 11 in) above sea level, it is the planet's lowest country.[17] It is also the country with the lowest natural highest point in the world, at 2.4 metres (7 ft 10 in). Future inundation of the Maldives due to rising sea levels is of great concern to its people, motivating the government to pledge becoming a carbon-neutral country by 2019
