Mauritania i/mɔːrɪˈteɪniə/ (Arabic: موريتانيا Mūrītānyā; Berber: Muritanya or Agawej; Wolof: Gànnaar; Soninke: Murutaane; Pulaar: Moritani), officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is a country in the Maghreb region of western North Africa. It is the eleventh largest country in Africa and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Morocco and the remnants of Western Sahara in the north, Algeria in the northeast, Mali in the east and southeast, and Senegal in the southwest.
The country derives its name from the ancient Berber Kingdom of Mauretania, which existed from the 3rd century BC to the 7th century AD, in the far north of modern-day Morocco. Approximately 90% of Mauritania's land is within the Sahara and consequently the population is concentrated in the south, where precipitation is slightly higher. The capital and largest city is Nouakchott, located on the Atlantic coast, which is home to around one-third of the country's 3.5 million people. The government was overthrown on 6 August 2008, in a military coup d'état led by General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz. On 16 April 2009, Aziz resigned from the military to run for president in the 19 July elections, which he won.
Nouakchott (/nwɑːkˈʃɒt/, Arabic: نواكشوط Nuwākshūṭ, originally derived from Berber Nawākšūṭ, "place of the winds") is the capital and by far the largest city of Mauritania. It is one of the largest cities in the Sahara. The city is the administrative and economic centre of Mauritania.
Nouakchott was a small village of little importance until 1958, when it was chosen as the capital of the nascent nation of Mauritania. It was designed and built to accommodate 15,000 people, but droughts since the 1970s have displaced a vast number of Mauritanians, who resettled in Nouakchott. This caused rapid urban growth and overcrowding, with the city having an estimated population of 2 million in 2008 despite the official figures being under a million. The resettled population inhabited slum areas under poor conditions, but the living conditions of a portion of these inhabitants have since been ameliorated.
Nouakchott is the hub of the Mauritanian economy and is home to a port that handles 500,000 tonnes of cargo per year and one of the country's two international airport (the other is Nouadhibou, the country's second largest city and a major port, in the north. A significant part of the population had lead a nomadic lifestyle, but massive droughts in the 1970s and following years brought about significant urbanization, with many former nomads setting up tents and relocating within the city. The city hosts the University of Nouakchott and several markets.

Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organization devoted to expanding the range of creative works available for others to build upon legally and to share. The organization has released several copyright-licenses known as Creative Commons licenses free of charge to the public. These licenses allow creators to communicate which rights they reserve, and which rights they waive for the benefit of recipients or other creators. An easy-to-understand one-page explanation of rights, with associated visual symbols, explains the specifics of each Creative Commons license. Creative Commons licenses do not replace copyright, but are based upon it. They replace individual negotiations for specific rights between copyright owner (licensor) and licensee, which are necessary under an "all rights reserved" copyright management, with a "some rights reserved" management employing standardized licenses for re-use cases where no commercial compensation is sought by the copyright owner. The result is an agile, low-overhead and low-cost copyright-management regime, profiting both copyright owners and licensees. Wikipedia uses one of these licenses.

While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings. The "Dakar Desert Challenge" is a Rally expedition from Portugal until Dakar. We travelled in Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea Bissau and it ended at the Dakar beach called "Lac Rose". There were 44 jeeps, 3 cars, 13 Dirtbikes and 1 Truck. This expedition has no competitive edge. We also took food and health care to the most needed children who live in Guinea. The soundtrack of the film is by: Lewis M. - Quantum The Lazy Faithful - Oh Yes Thievery Corporation - Lebanese Blonde The entire film was done with a Nikon D800. Attached were either a Nikkor 50mm F1.8, a Nikkor 24mm F2.0 or a Sigma 70-300mm F4 lenses. I also took a Manfrotto tripod and a Rode Videomic through 4000 kms in Africa. This project is done with a zero budget.
I traveled to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, West Africa, in January of 2009. Using a plain black piece of velvet cloth as a backdrop, I took portraits of Mauritanian men, women, and children that I met on my travels. Most of the portraits featured are Pulaar people from the south, but there are a few portraits of some black moor men and women and one portrait of a male white moor from the central part of the country. During our journey, we had very little contact with the white moors; of the few white moor women I met, I was unable to convince one to participate in the project. All photos are the property of Andrea Moore.

It is the extraordinary adventure of a veteran journalist, who, alone, passed himself as an undercover collaborator of an NGO, (Non Governmental Org) and eventually succeeded into boarding a pirogue full of clandestine sub-Saharan from Nuadhibu, Mauritania, hoping to reach the Canary Islands, part of the European Eldorado. The boat engine eventually broke down as they went adrift, and where saved in-extremis by a Russian tanker, after Dominique was able to use the satellite phone he had concealed.
