The United Nations has warned the situation in South Sudan has actually worsened since a peace deal was signed by the president and the rebel leader last month under intense international pressure. Fighting is continuing and more than four and a half million people are now depending on food aid. The US is pushing for an arms embargo and sanctions and the next steps against the world's youngest country will be discussed on the fringes of the UN General Assembly next week. At least 717 people taking part in the Hajj pilgrimage have been killed in a stampede near the Islamic holy city of Mecca, officials in Saudi Arabia say. Another 805 people were injured in the incident at Mina, which occurred as two million pilgrims were taking part in the Hajj's last major rite. They converge on Mina to throw stones at pillars representing the devil. Preparations for the Hajj were marred when a crane collapsed at Mecca's Grand Mosque this month, killing 109 people.

South Sudan: Breaking the rules of war - BBC News
The United Nations has warned the situation in South Sudan has actually worsened since a peace deal was signed by the president and the rebel leader last month under intense international pressure. Fighting is continuing and more than four and a half million people are now depending on food aid. The US is pushing for an arms embargo and sanctions and the next steps against the world's youngest country will be discussed on the fringes of the UN General Assembly next week. Alastair Leithead compiled this report from Unity State, where terrible atrocities have been carried out against civilians.

Hajj stampede: At least 717 killed in Saudi Arabia - BBC News
At least 717 people taking part in the Hajj pilgrimage have been killed in a stampede near the Islamic holy city of Mecca, officials in Saudi Arabia say. Another 805 people were injured in the incident at Mina, which occurred as two million pilgrims were taking part in the Hajj's last major rite. They converge on Mina to throw stones at pillars representing the devil. Preparations for the Hajj were marred when a crane collapsed at Mecca's Grand Mosque this month, killing 109 people.
Our correspondent Frank Gardner has the latest.

'Supermoon' around the world - BBC News
People around the world have been watching a rare lunar eclipse that coincided with a so-called "supermoon". It was last observed in 1982 and the next one will be in 2033. A supermoon occurs when the Moon is in the closest part of its orbit to Earth, meaning it appears larger in the sky.

US Speaker John Boehner to leave Congress - BBC News

In November, 2014, Susan Copestick, 56, was raped by her former partner. Before and after the attack, Peter Drummond, 62, had been taking pills, and eventually overdosed, but was saved after Susan called an ambulance. BBC News - Beef Imports to China
Bad news for cows. Beef consumption is way up in China. Imports of beef are 15 times higher than three years ago. Beef imports to Hong Kong have tripled in the last three years. China has banned imports of beef from the United States and Japan because of past cases of mad cow disease, so now people are smuggling beef in suitcases. They will soon be experiencing much more of the food-related diseases that are commonplace in the U.S.
