Instead, he finds a country steeped in political corruption and economic turmoil. Cannabis is viewed by many growers, users, and politicians as a drug that will cause insanity, but it may be Swaziland's only hope for economic stability.

The New Voortrekkers - Mozambique
Aug 1997
When the Boers of South Africa set off on their great Voortrek 160 years ago into the African hinterland, they wanted to set up their own Afrikaner homeland and escape British domination.
Now a group of Afrikaners, many descended from the original Voortrekkers, are setting off again, this time to northern Mozambique. They fear that their farms at home are being swallowed up or given back to the newly affluent black and coloured South Africans. Many of the Afrikaners belong to the far right who have been active in the pursuit of an Afrikaner homeland. They claim that the move to Mozambique is merely to control their destiny. Mozambique's locals are not so sure the influx of Afrikaners is a good idea. Their forests are being felled and they fear losing their land. As the Mozambiquans stamp and sing at a traditional ceremony, the white South African families hold a separate church service thanking God for a good harvest. Can the two groups live in harmony and who will really benefit from this 'Second Great Trek.'?

BUSHFIRE FESTIVAL LIGHTS UP SWAZILAND
LEADIN
Bushfire is an annual socially-conscious music and arts festival in Swaziland.
It's aimed at demonstrating an alternative lifestyle, but also at bringing people together to enjoy music, poetry and art in the beautiful Ewulwini valley.
STORYLINE:
Here in Swaziland a unique festival is underway.
Swaziland's flagship arts event- the Bushfire Festival - takes place every year on these lush slopes of the Ewulwini Valley, known as the valley of heaven.
The three-day gathering is now in its sixth year and brings together artists, poets, musicians and some 15,000 festival-goers - to share performances, creativity and ideas.
It's the first Bushfire appearance for this troupe of drummers and puppeteers from neighbouring Mozambique, but they're already attracting a captivated audience.
The giant papier mache heads are a recent design collaboration between artists at Maputo's Franco-Mozambican cultural centre and the performers themselves.
Today's story tells of a corrupt policeman extorting a bribe from a market seller - all through thumping drumbeats and stylised movements.
The troupe of 21 say they develop their own storylines - drawing upon their own everyday lives.
Puppeteer Dimas Carlos Tivane says: "We must show the people what's the life in Mozambique, you know. And the story shows the life in Mozambique."
And the festival's theme of social consciousness stretches beyond the ethos of performers.
In the market area, intricate woven Swazi crafts are on offer, alongside honest, locally-grown vegetarian food from the "Guba" Cafe.
Choosing to snub usual festival fare like hot dogs, burgers and pizzas, these diners lounge on up-cycled furniture made from disused wooden pallets and spools of electrical wire.
Sam Hodgson and his staff at Guba are run off their feet preparing roast beetroot salad, warm pumpkin curries and spicy chai tea - all made from locally-sourced ingredients or grown by families on their community farm.
Hodgson says it's all in keeping with the ethos of the festival and while it's all about having fun, there's a serious message to spread.
"It has a serious edge to it as well," he says. "Because, you know, there are a lot of social issues in this part of the world, and Swaziland has the highest HIV rate in the world. And it's just a great opportunity to remind people that it's really useful to remember that. And while you can still have a great time, just to be contributing to something positive at the same time."
Metres away from Sam's smoothies, several hundred people are doing just that - getting fully involved.
Steve Barnett is the Silent Conductor - bringing disparate audiences together in musical harmony - without ever uttering a single word.
Each candy-coloured plastic pipe represents a different woodwind note - and strangers come together in symphony.
Barnett says: "All people have that kind of childlike thing, that they want to respond to. They all want to be a part of the music. So this is an opportunity to allow people, who would usually think of themselves as not being musical, to be a part of the music."
But this year, Bushfire has faced some discord - with some calling for an informal cultural boycott of the mountain kingdom - in defiance of what they say is King Mswati III's undemocratic reign.
Swazi singing sensation Bholoja says he still chose to play at the festival.
Bholoja, Swazi singer: "If you are a musician, you are a messenger. And you must be a messenger that will build nations, that will build Swaziland, that will build South Africa, that will build Africa and the world at large."
And as a mellow afternoon turns to a smoky dusk, punters don their warm jumpers and come together in celebration of music and poetry with a flavour of political comment.

Do in Tanzania
============
1 - Safari While you are in Tanzania you may organize your safari to Serengeti and other National parks at an affordable price. If there's one trip that will change your perspective on life, it's an African safari. Contact some of the tour operators for Safari Details.
2 - Cultural Tours Touring Tanzania for culture is interestingly great as it encompasses more than 150+ ethnic groups. There is plenty of traditional food, cultural practices (such as hunting with bushmen, beeskeeping, traditional medicine) that one enjoys within the boundaries. You will also get to visit a number of locations that normally people would be completely unaware of. If you happen to be a person who loves to explore the world and meet new people in order to gain knowledge about different customs, a cultural tour is definitely the best type of vacation for you.The services are not expensive and can turn out to be cheaper than expected provided you get the right information on where to stay, best tour companies and just knowledge of what you want. This way, it will save you time and costs as well.
3 - There are loads of National Parks for those wanting to watch Tanzania's wildlife. You can gain entry for around $100 US and benefit from a tour (and perhaps a night's accommodation). The better parks, though packed with tourists, are found in the north of the country. Ruaha National Park is the best in the south (locals actually say this is the best park, especially if you want to see wild animals as opposed to semi-tame ones in the northern parks). Don't just be sucked into the tourist circuit in the north; the south offers great parks and towns (base yourself out of Iringa), and you will feel less of a tourist and more of a guest if you travel this way.
4 - Scuba diving in and around Pemba and Zanzibar is another good experience.
5 - You can also visit numerous historical Slave Trade sites, which could make for an interesting, if a little depressing, excursion.
6 - Beaches: Did you know that Tanzania has some of the best, most unspoiled beaches in the world? They are stunning, with their white sand, palm trees, and cool Indian Ocean water!
7 - Kayak the beautiful coastal waters with a tour operator.
8 - Tanzania has two of the best Stone Age sites in the world: Isimila Gorge (near Iringa) and the earliest known examples of human art among the rock paintings, near Kolo, north of Dodoma -- some of which are reckoned to be around 30,000 years old.
9 - Kilimanjaro is one of Tanzania's main attractions. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. Many visitors come to Tanzania to summit this great mountain. The main peak is estimated to be 5895m high making it a real challenge for mountaineers.

Alex Saul, Tanzania tour guide
Alex Saul, Tanzania tour guide - Alex Saul, Tanzania trip leader
Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=World1Tube
Tanzania is the largest country in East Africa, bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north; Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, and Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south.
Do in Tanzania
============

From Bagsværd to Beira: Blue bikes hit the roads of Mozambique
Anyone who has ever visited Denmark will know that bicycles are one thing the country is certainly not lacking. The sprawling Novo Nordisk sites across Denmark are no exception, where Novo Nordisk-branded bikes help employees get around between buildings throughout the day.
In 2009, Novo Nordisk was approached by Danish bicycle leasing firm Baisikeli with an idea for an innovative partnership. Novo Nordisk would lease bikes for employee use over a two-and-a-half-year period, after which they would be sent to Africa. Here they would be refitted at local bike shops to fit local tra

inSCALE Mobile Technology in Mozambique - enhancing community health

The project is working to increase coverage of integrated community case management (iCCM) through community health workers (CHWs) trained to adequately treat children under five years for diarrhoea, pneumonia and malaria. The goal of the project is to develop scalable innovations based on research which will have a positive impact on CHW motivation, performance and retention in order to increase the quality and coverage of iCCM. This will eventually lead to an increase in the number of children receiving appropriate treatment in their communities or being referred to health facilities.
Findings from a large piece of formative research, including literature reviews, stakeholder analyses and other research activities, were used to identify possible innovations. The feasibility and acceptability of these options were then analysed by key national stakeholders. Based on their recommendations, the inSCALE APE CommCare mobile phone application was developed by Malaria Consortium in partnership with the Inhambane Provincial Health Directorate, Dimagi, University College London and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
The film shows community health worker Halima in Inharrime District, Mozambique using the inSCALE APE CommCare mobile phone application. Halima says of the application ‘My work has greatly improved since I started using the phone. I can communicate with my supervisor to ask questions and I have clear information on how to treat patients’.

From Denmark to Mozambique: Health on Two Wheels | Novo Nordisk
Here they would be refitted at local bike shops to fit local transportation needs and then sold.

Abstract
Several efforts have been made to improve health care for people with mental and behavior disorders in Mozambique. Nevertheless, new steps to a dynamic and innovative era have to be taken in order to guarantee this services quality and expansion with the quality needed. Staring from the First National Mental Health Seminar in 1984, crossing the creation of National Mental Health Program in 1990, running a long way until 2006 when the Second National Mental Health took place, and concluding with the creation of Mental Health Department at Ministry of Health in 2008, the mental health trajectory in Mozambique can be considered historic. The need to expand psychiatry and mental health services and training human resources are some of the main spotlights for developing this huge health area in Mozambique.

72 People Die After Drinking Contaminated Beer In Mozambique
"Three more people have died from drinking contaminated beer, bringing the number of fatalities to 72, as the number hospitalized fell by more than 150, health authorities in Mozambique said on Tuesday.
About 35 victims are now hospitalized, down from 196, according Paula Bernardo, director of health, women and social welfare in the northeastern Tete province. At least seven people are still in critical condition in hospitals in the Chitima district, Bernardo told Radio Mozambique.
Dozens of people fell ill in Chitima and in the neighboring Songo district after drinking traditional beer, known as Pombe, at a funeral over the weekend. The beer, brewed from millet or corn flour, is believed to have been poisoned with crocodile bile, according to district health officials."

Maputo has been the capital of Mozambique since 1898. The city was previously called Lourenço Marques until the country's independence in 1975. It is the largest city in Mozambique and the country's most important harbour. It is situated at the mouth of the Santo River in the extreme south, 90 km from the border with South Africa.
In comparison with other sub-Saharan African cities, the urban area feels small and concentrated, with wide avenues and old trees. People are generally out and about in the streets, walking, driving and getting on with life. The vibe is healthy and active, with little begging and lots of street vendors and markets. There is no heavy presence of police during the day.
There are few tourists to be seen and at times the atmosphere is as much South American as African. Buildings range from old colonial palaces to new high-rise constructions, but the dominant architecture consists of Stalinist-looking concrete-walled boxes, generally with badly eroded paint and rusty security bars. Fortunately, these tend to fade into the background, and there are enough buildings with old charm and lush enough gardens (cycads, coleus, flamboyant, jacaranda, bouganvillea, etc.) to give a pleasing if shabby feel. Especially outstanding buildings which shouldn't be missed are the Pancho Guedes creations: Guadiesque, surreal and difficult to find.
The city provides a range of accommodation, from many-star hotels (e.g. Polana, Cardoso, Southern Sun) to comfortable backpackers' hostels (Base and Fatima's) and reasonable options in between (Mozaic Guest House).

====================
1 - The Railway Station on Praca dos Trabalhadores is sometimes mistaken to be the work by Gustave Eiffel. However, the building is an imposing structure and well-worth a visit, especially at Friday or Saturday nights where live music often is played.
2 - The National Art Museum has a small but good collection of Mozambican art, including several large canvases by the world-renowned Malangatana.
3 - The Jardim Tunduru is a very pretty (albeit small) botanical garden.
4 - The Museum of the Revolution chronicles Mozambique's fight for indepedence from Portuguese colonialism(Closed in 2008 and by the looks of it will not re-open soon)
5 - The Mercado Central in the Baixa district has fresh fish, crabs, calamari, fruits and vegetables, and many household staples. Safe, lively and recommended, especially if cooking for yourself.
6 - Walk up Avenida Julius Nyerere. Start from the Hotel Cardoso or Natural History Museum along R Mutemba to Nyerere then left (north) to the Polana Hotel. Boutiques, restaurants, curio vendors, video stores, etc. to be seen in the relatively upscale Polana neighborhood.
7 - Casa do Ferro Avenida Samora Marcel, is a building designed by Gustave Eiffel, architect of Paris' Eiffel Tower. It is also known as the "Iron House" or "Steel House" because of its all-metal structure. Originally intended as the Governor's home, it turned out to be too hot to live in under Maputo's tropical conditions, and is now a museum.
8 - Museu de História Natural, Praca Travessia de Zambezi (close to Cardoso Hotel). Enjoyable little museum. Lots of stuffed animals, birds and reptiles with full-size models of elephants. Interesting collection of wooden carvings, including a selection of traditional and very uncomfortable looking wooden pillows. Mtn 50.

1 - Visit some beautiful beaches, such as Catembe and Ponta d'Ouro. It is very jovial in these atmospheres and are generally safe, but beware of pickpocketing and avoid bringing valuables with you on a beach stroll. Ponta D'Ouro and Ponta Malongane have some beautiful scuba-diving spots, with either campsites or chalets right on the beach.
2 - Take in a wedding. Beautiful tribal singing and women ululating. Civil ceremonies next door to Avenida Hotel. Several weddings on Saturday morning.

Nestled between South Africa and Tanzania, on the south-eastern coast of Africa lies the tropical paradise of Mozambique. The 2500-km long coastline with white palm lined beaches, pristine crystal clear waters, lagoons and spectacular corral reefs, is one of the most popular holiday destinations on the African continent.
This magnificent coastline with its secluded unspoiled beaches is scattered with stunning resorts that blend in with the natural beauty of the region.
With its all year round summer climate and safe beaches this paradise offers unforgettable family holidays and for the adventurous many activities, especially fishing, diving, snorkeling and sailing as well as peace and tranquility for those who just want to laze around on white tropical beaches and enjoy life.
Magnificent sunrises, calm lukewarm waters of the Indian Ocean, excellent cuisine and friendly people await those who want to discover this tropical paradise called Mozambique.
A video by Adventure Films called “Discover Mozambique” must be the most comprehensive audio-visual tourist guide available covering the coastline from Ponta do Ouro in the south all the way up to Inhasoro just south of Beira.
The viewer will experience, with superb video and audio quality, the beauty of the resorts on this part of the coastline. Places like Ponta du Ouro and Malongane, Mamoli, Marracuene, Macaneta, Bilene, Xai-Xai, Chongoene, Chizavane, Chidenguele, Zavora, Paindane, Guinjata, Jangamo, Coconut Bay, Inhambane, Barra, Maxixe, Morrungulo, Pomene, Vilanculos and Inhasoro.
This video is a must for all who plan to travel to Mozambique. Not only for a family holiday but also for scuba divers, snorkelers, fishermen either deep sea or surf, sailors as well as 4X4 enthusiasts.
Mozambique is one of the worlds best kept diving, spearfishing and big game fishing secrets. With a coastline of over 2500 km, one only has to look at her neighboring exotic dive destinations such as Mauritius, Comoros and the Maldives to understand what lies beneath the warm Indian Ocean – the most pristine and virgin reefs in the world with names like Bass City, Texas, Manta, Lighthouse, Jangamo, Playstation, Zambia Shoal, Sylvia Shoal and many more.
A huge diversity of game fish abounds in the Mozambican waters including Sailfish and Marlin. This coastline is also famous for huge King-fish catches.
“Discover Mozambique” is the ultimate guide for planning your trip to this tropical paradise. It covers all the resorts on this part of the coastline by showing all the lodges, hotels and campsites where you can enjoy an unforgettable holiday experience. It offers handy information on road conditions, beaches, dive camps and other activities and tourist attractions.
