North Korea and South Korea. Located on the Korean Peninsula, Korea is bordered by the People's Republic of China to the northwest, Russia to the northeast, and is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan (East Sea), and separated from the Republic of China (Taiwan) to the south by the East China Sea.
Archaeological and linguistic evidence suggest the origins of the Korean people were Altaic language-speaking people from south-central Siberia,[4] who populated ancient Korea in successive waves from the Neolithic age to the Bronze Age.[5] The adoption of the Chinese writing system ("Hanja" in Korean) in the 2nd century BC, and Buddhism in the 4th century AD, had profound effects on the Three Kingdoms of Korea.
Korea was united by Emperor Taejo of the Goryeo Dynasty in 936. Goryeo was a highly cultural state and created the Jikji in the 14th century, using the world's first movable metal type printing press. The Mongol invasions in the 13th century, however, greatly weakened the nation which was forced to become a tributary state. After the Mongol Empire's collapse, severe political strife followed and Goryeo was replaced by the Joseon Dynasty in 1388.
The first 200 years of Joseon were marked by relative peace and saw the creation of the Korean alphabet Hangul by King Sejong the Great in the 14th century and the rise in influence of Confucianism in the country. During the latter part of the dynasty, however, Korea's isolationist policy earned it the Western nickname the "Hermit kingdom". By the late 19th century, the country became the object of the colonial designs of Japan. In 1910, Korea was annexed by Japan and remained so until the end of World War II in August 1945.
In 1945, the Soviet Union and the United States agreed on the surrender of Japanese forces in Korea and Soviet troops occupied north of the 38th parallel, while U.S. troops took surrender south of it. This decision by allied armies soon became the basis for the division of Korea by the two superpowers, exacerbated by their inability to agree on the terms of Korean independence. The two Cold War rivals then established governments sympathetic to their own ideologies, leading to Korea's current division into two political entities: North Korea and South Korea. The ensuing conflict between the two was largely a proxy war.
North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, is a single-party state with a centrally planned industrial economy. South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, is a free market, democratic, and developed country with membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Group of Twenty.☆☆☆☆☆

Documentary by Mark Stone, Asia Correspondent for Sky News
INFO:
In a series of rare and harrowing interviews, defectors have told Sky News of their horrific lives inside North Korea and their extraordinary journeys to escape the country.
The men and women agreed to talk from their new homes in the South Korean capital, Seoul.
Their interviews form part of a special programme to be shown on Sky News this weekend.
Two of the defectors had spent time inside North Korea's notorious political prison camps.
Another was a tank commander in the secretive state's army before managing to escape.
One women describes, for the first time, the torture she endured at the hands of North Korean prison camp guards.
From her Seoul apartment, Cheon YoungSuk sobbed uncontrollably as she recalled the torture.
"With that plank, they hit me until it split into two or they won't stop hitting me. It must split into two. Then the beating stops. They hit me like that, they starved me, kicked me," she said.
Lee SoonShil, a defector from North Korea who made it South Korea.
"During the torture the hardest thing was they made me kneel on a chair. The guard had ridges on the bottom of his shoes. He would stand on my bare skin and start twisting (his feet).
"When bare skin and shoe soles are twisted with pressure it grinds the skin. That was the most hard. That was the time I shouted. It hurt too much.
"Because it hurt too much I shouted to him to grind faster. Twist faster to finish it more quickly.
"They wrapped my hair on their hand and start smashing my face on the corner of the desk.... [they are] crueller than beasts. How could a human do that to another human?"
On Thursday, diplomats addressed the United Nations saying that North Korea must act immediately to halt its "litany of abuses" and "crimes against humanity".
"We note with concern that... human rights violations and crimes against humanity continue to take place with impunity," British UN representative Karen Pierce told the Geneva forum.
North Korea denies the existence of prison camps. It reacted angrily to a United Nations Human Rights Council Commission of Inquiry (COI), published in February.
The COI conducted scores of interviews with defectors all of whom told stories similar to those heard by Sky News.
The UN body concluded that "systematic, widespread and gross human rights violations have been and are being committed" by North Korea.
It said that "the gravity, scale and nature of these violations reveal a state that does not have any parallel in the contemporary world".
It described a catalogue of "unspeakable atrocities" which amounted to "crimes against humanity".
The report is currently being considered at the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York.
The detailed findings of the report were also discussed at informal meeting of the UN Security Council two weeks ago. However, two members of the council, Russia and China, both historically allied to North Korea, failed to attend.
The Defectors - Sky News Special Programme
Speaking after the informal meeting, the chairman of the Commission of Inquiry, retired Australian judge Michael Kirby, said he was disappointed that China and Russia failed to attend but still hoped that the UN would now act against North Korea.
"The time has come for effective action from the United Nations," he said.
"If ever there is to be a case for referral of a matter to the International Criminal Court, it is difficult to imagine a stronger case than has been made out in the case of North Korea.
"If this is not a case for such a referral, it is difficult to imagine what would be."
The level of abuse uncovered in North Korea, both in the UN report and the interviews conducted by Sky News has been compared to some of the abuses during the holocaust of World War Two.
Mr Kirby said that the descriptions he heard reminded him of Holocaust abuses.
He said: "I never thought that in my professional life, my life as a judge or as an officer of the United Nations, I would sit there and hear descriptions that were so similar to the descriptions of what went on in those places.
"I thought we had said as a world community, 'never again'.
"I thought that was what the charter of the United Nations was about. I thought that was why in the charter it speaks of international peace and security and the protection of universal human rights together."

On 27 September, MacArthur received the top secret National Security Council Memorandum 81/1 from Truman reminding him that operations north of the 38th parallel were authorized only if "at the time of such operation there was no entry into North Korea by major Soviet or Chinese Communist forces, no announcements of intended entry, nor a threat to counter our operations militarily..."] On 29 September MacArthur restored the government of the Republic of Korea under Syngman Rhee. On 30 September, Defense Secretary George Marshall sent an eyes-only message to MacArthur: "We want you to feel unhampered tactically and strategically to proceed north of the 38th parallel." During October, the ROK police executed people who were suspected to be sympathetic to North Korea, and similar massacres were carried out until early 1951.
On 30 September, Zhou Enlai warned the United States that China was prepared to intervene in Korea if the United States crossed the 38th parallel. Zhou attempted to advise North Korean commanders on how to conduct a general withdrawal by using the same tactics which had allowed Chinese communist forces to successfully escape Chiang Kai-shek's Encirclement Campaigns in the 1930s, but by some accounts North Korean commanders did not utilize these tactics effectively. Historian Bruce Cumings argues, however, the KPA's rapid withdrawal was strategic, with troops melting into the mountains from where they could launch guerrilla raids on the UN forces spread out on the coasts.
By 1 October 1950, the UN Command repelled the KPA northwards past the 38th parallel; the ROK Army crossed after them, into North Korea. MacArthur made a statement demanding the KPA's unconditional surrender. Six days later, on 7 October, with UN authorization, the UN Command forces followed the ROK forces northwards. The X Corps landed at Wonsan (in southeastern North Korea) and Riwon (in northeastern North Korea), already captured by ROK forces. The Eighth U.S. Army and the ROK Army drove up western Korea and captured Pyongyang city, the North Korean capital, on 19 October 1950. The 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team ("Rakkasans") made their first of two combat jumps during the Korean War on 20 October 1950 at Sunchon and Sukchon. The missions of the 187th were to cut the road north going to China, preventing North Korean leaders from escaping from Pyongyang; and to rescue American prisoners of war. At month's end, UN forces held 135,000 KPA prisoners of war. As they neared the Sino-Korean border, the UN forces in the west were divided from those in the east by 50–100 miles of mountainous terrain.
Taking advantage of the UN Command's strategic momentum against the communists, General MacArthur believed it necessary to extend the Korean War into China to destroy depots supplying the North Korean war effort. President Truman disagreed, and ordered caution at the Sino-Korean border...

As actors and actresses get busy preparing for the Spring Festival Gala on the eve of Chinese New Year, it has been decided that four parallel sessions with distinctive features will co-stage this year's event in cities across the country.
When the main gala kicks off in Beijing on Feb. 7, another session will simultaneously take place in northwest China's Xi'an City, the starting point of the Silk Road, and capital of 13 ancient dynasties. It is hoped that the session will reveal the city's special fusion of ancient and modern, according to the gala's Xi'an branch director Gu Zhigang.
While south China's Guangzhou plans to exhibit its modern vibes.
"The night best captures the beauty of Guangzhou. When the landscape lamps light up Haixinsha (an island in the city), people will see a reformed and opened-up Guangzhou," said Li Meilan, director of the Guangzhou branch of the gala.
Quanzhou, a city in southeast China on the west coast of the Taiwan Strait, will be hosting a branch session.
"I think the choice of Quanzhou has a lot of fine implications. Everybody knows that Quanzhou is the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road. Moreover, the (location of the) city signifies that people on both sides of the Strait are family," said Sun Bin, director of Quanzhou branch of Spring Festival Gala.
The north China city of Hulunbuir in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region is arranging to show the characteristics of various nationalities of China during its parallel session.
"The exterior mainly unfolds the magnificence of the vast winter prairie while the interior displays the theme of national unity," said Song Chen, stage designer of the session.
It's the second time the Spring Festival Gala will have parallel sessions, which were first introduced in Shanghai and Xi'an in 1996. More on: http://newscontent.cctv.com/NewJsp/news.jsp?fileId=338078

This is an excellent lane that takes about an hour to drive, it's so good they're going to close it, too much fun to be had it seems. Never mind that the surface is very hard-wearing.
Note that we went wrong at one point as there was a logging track that crossed the lane, which we took by accident, it was at SN771639, I turned left but should have gone straight on. That was a shame as we seemed to miss some interesting terrain.
There's a mud section near SN791619 runs parallel to the river, it appears that the river is the best option at this point as it's as hard-wearing as the track was previously, and the land to the side of the river is very boggy and badly damaged. The river bed is rocky but flat with no large stones, you'll get stuck in the mud but not the river. On the GPS it looked like the lane was actually in the river and the muddy section met the river later anyway so you'll end up in it anyway.
An excellent lane, do it while you can.
