Jack Kerouac (/ˈkɛruˌæk/ or /ˈkɛrəˌwæk/, born Jean-Louis Lebris de Kérouac; March 12, 1922 – October 21, 1969) was an American novelist and poet.
He is considered a literary iconoclast and, alongside William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, a pioneer of the Beat Generation. Kerouac is recognized for his method of spontaneous prose. Thematically, his work covers topics such as Catholic spirituality, jazz, promiscuity, Buddhism, drugs, poverty, and travel. He became an underground celebrity and, with other beats, a progenitor of the hippie movement, although he remained antagonistic toward some of its politically radical elements.
In 1969, aged 47, Kerouac died from internal bleeding due to long-term alcohol abuse. Since his death, Kerouac's literary prestige has grown, and several previously unseen works have been published. All of his books are in print today, including The Town and the City, On the Road, Doctor Sax, The Dharma Bums, Mexico City Blues, The Subterraneans, Desolation Angels, Visions of Cody, The Sea Is My Brother, and Big Sur.
Visions of Cody is an experimental novel by Jack Kerouac. It was written in 1951-1952, and though not published in its entirety until 1972, it had by then achieved an underground reputation. Since its first printing, Visions of Cody has been published with an introduction by Beat poet Allen Ginsberg titled "The Visions of the Great Rememberer."
Visions of Cody is derived from experimental spontaneous prose inserts that Kerouac added to the original manuscript of On the Road in 1951-52. Part of the novel is a fast-forward recapitulation of the events described in On the Road, which was also about Kerouac and Cassady. When Kerouac appeared on The Steve Allen Show in 1959, he secretly read from the introduction to the then-unpublished Visions of Cody although he was supposedly reading from On The Road, the book he was holding.
The first section of the book is essentially a collection of short stream-of-consciousness essays, which Kerouac called "sketches", many simply describing elements of Duluoz's (Kerouac's) post-World War II New York City environment, from the texture and smells of a lunch counter to St. Patrick's Cathedral, or minor events like the decision to masturbate in a public restroom—all interlaced with Kerouac's internal dialogue. Along the way through these descriptions, Duluoz meanders towards a decision to go visit Cody in San Francisco.

On the Road is a novel by American writer Jack Kerouac, based on the travels of Kerouac and his friends across America. It is considered a defining work of the postwar Beat and Counterculture generations, with its protagonists living life against a backdrop of jazz, poetry, and drug use. The novel, published in 1957, is a roman à clef, with many key figures in the Beat movement, such as William S. Burroughs (Old Bull Lee), Allen Ginsberg (Carlo Marx) and Neal Cassady (Dean Moriarty) represented by characters in the book, including Kerouac himself as the narrator Sal Paradise.
The idea for On the Road, Kerouac's second novel, was formed during the late 1940s in a series of notebooks, and then typed out on a continuous reel of paper during three weeks in April 1951. It was first published by Viking Press in 1957. After several film proposals dating from 1957, the book was finally made into a film, On the Road (2012), produced by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by Walter Salles.
Cody is a surname and male given name. It may also be spelled Codey, Codie, Codee, Kodi or Kody.
According to A Dictionary of First Names, Cody is "a transferred use of the Irish surname, an Anglicized form of Gaelic O'Cuidighthigh 'descendant of Cuidightheach' (originally a byname for a helpful person), or of Mac Oda 'son of Oda' (a personal name of uncertain origin). Use as a given name in the United States especially has been at least in part inspired by William Frederick Cody (1846-1917), better known as ‘Buffalo Bill’, the showman of the Wild West".

"Everything is going to the beat — It's the beat generation, it be-at, it's the beat to keep, it's the beat of the heart, it's being beat and down in the world and like oldtime lowdown and like in ancient civilizations the slave boatmen rowing galleys to a beat and servants spinning pottery to a beat..." Jack Kerouac, known for his books, "On the Road" and "Big Sur" lived a quiet life in Orlando Florida for more than a decade while writing "The Dharma Bums". Regarded as one of the voices of the Beat Generation, little historical information was mentioned about his residence in the neighborhood of College Park until author and NBC reporter Bob Keeling uncovered the story. Narrated by Michael Perkins of the Orange County Regional History Center. Produced/edited for "Scrapbook" series which aired on Vision TV and WMFE (PBS).

http://www.nysoclib.org/notes/2013/voice_all.html The award-winning author of Minor Characters presents a groundbreaking portrait of Kerouac as a young artist. In The Voice is All, Joyce Johnson, author of the classic memoir Door Wide Open, about her relationship with Jack Kerouac, brilliantly peels away layers of the Kerouac legend to show how, caught between two cultures and two languages, he forged a voice to contain his dualities. Looking more deeply than previous biographers into how Kerouac's French Canadian background enriched his prose and gave him a unique outsider's vision of America, she tracks his development from boyhood through the phenomenal breakthroughs of 1951 that resulted in the composition of On the Road, followed by Visions of Cody. By illuminating Kerouac's early c...

She gently falls asleep
Her head is laid upon my lap
The highway sings a lonesome lullaby
My daughter here beside me
My little boy is in my backseat
Outlined by the headlights from behind
And I ask the Lord to freeze us here in time
As my son stretches out his hand to mine
Silhouette sent from heaven
Paint a portrait of eternal things
A fleeting glimpse like a vapor
Bring remembrance of what is holy
Clean and pure, unblemished and unflawed
Come to me, sweet visions of God
I hear her whisper sweetly
"I made this for you, daddy"
A crayon masterpiece says, ?I love you?
At last a bedtime story
They rush to get beneath the sheets
For Peter Pan, Pinocchio, and Pooh
They cling to every word until the end
Then they close their eyes and drift to Never land
Silhouette sent from heaven
Paint a portrait of eternal things
A fleeting glimpse like a vapor
Bring remembrance of what is holy
Clean and pure, unblemished and unflawed
Come to me, sweet visions of God
So often I have missed him
Like a shadow in the night
A familiar face I fail to recognize
But he is there in pigtails
Peek-a-boo and piggyback rides
A kiss, a gentle touch, a baby?s cry
And silhouette sent from heaven
Paint a portrait of eternal things
A fleeting glimpse like a vapor
Bring remembrance of what is holy
Clean and pure, unblemished and unflawed
Come to me, come to me, come to me
Sweet visions of God
A silhouette
