Simple Harmonic Motion, Mass Spring System - Amplitude, Frequency, Velocity - Physics Problems
This physics video tutorial explains the concept of simple harmonic motion. It focuses on the mass spring system and shows you how to calculate variables such as amplitude, frequency, period, maximum velocity, maximum acceleration, restoring force, spring constant k, elastic potential energy, kinetic energy, and mechanical energy in addition to describing the motion of the mass spring system using a sinusoidal function such as sine or cosine. This video contains plenty of examples and practice problems.

In this animated lecture, you will learn about difference between oscillation and vibration, what is the difference between oscillation and vibration, oscillation vs vibration, oscillatory motion, vibratory motion and frequency of oscillatory and vibratory motion. Also, I will teach you the easy concept of "types of motion - vibration and oscillation", "vibration and oscillation difference", "vibration and oscillation definition".
Q: What is the difference between oscillation and vibration?
Q: Difference between oscillation and vibration?
Q: Oscillation vs Vibration?
Ans: There is minor difference between oscillation and vibration. The difference between oscillation and vibration depends purely on the rate of frequency. If the frequency of "To and Fro Motion" of an object is high, we call such type "To and Fro Motion" as vibratory motion or just vibration. Similarly, if the frequency of "To and Fro Motion" of an object is low, we call such type of "To and Fro Motion" as oscillatory motion or just oscillation.
Vibration and oscillation are two different terms of "To and Fro Motion". Objects performing to and fro motion or back and forth motion may either termed as a oscillation or vibration depending on their respective frequency.
For example, the "To and Fro Motion" of Pendulum is known as oscillatory motion or just oscillation. While the "To and Fro Motion" of String of guitar is known as vibration or just vibration.
Q: What is oscillation?
Q: What is oscillatory motion?
Q: What is oscillatory motion in Physics?
Q: Give examples of Oscillation or oscillatory motion?
Ans: Oscillatory motion or just oscillation is a type or form of "To and Fro Motion" or "Back and Forth Motion". When an object moves up and down or back and forth with respect to some time, we call such type of motion as "To and Fro Motion" or oscillatory . If the frequency of to and fro motion or back and forth motion is low, we call it oscillation or oscillatory motion.
The example of oscillatory motion or just oscillation is the back and forth motion of simple pendulum or pendulum of a clock.
Q: What is vibration?
Q: What is vibratory motion?
Q: What is vibratory motion in Physics?
Q: Give examples of vibration or vibratory motion?
Ans: Vibratory motion or vibration is also a type of "To and Fro Motion" or "Back and Fro Motion". When an object moves up and down or move back and forth and repeat this motio on the same path over time, we call it to and fro motion or vibration. If the frequency of To and Fro Motion is high, we call it vibration or just vibratory motion.
The example of vibration is the to and fro motion of string of a guitar.
Q: What is frequency?
Q: Explain frequency of To and Fro Motion?
Q: Define frequency of Oscillation?
Q: Define frequency of Vibration?
Q: Give examples of frequency?
Ans: The easy and simple definition of frequency is "The number of vibrations or oscillations per second". The frequency of Oscillation or oscillatory motion is usually low. While the frequency of vibration or vibratory motion is usually high.
The S.I unit of frequency is Hertz, number of Oscillations per second or number of vibrations per second.
For example, if a simple pendulum completes 30 Oscillations per second, its frequency will be 30 hertz. If a string of guitar completes 200 vibrations per second, its frequency will be 200 hertz.

1.Does this function represent (a) simple harmonic,(b) periodic but not simple harmonic,or(c) no-periodic motion? Calculate the period (ω is any positive constant]:sin ωt + cos ωt
2..A body oscillates with SHM according to the equation (in SI units), x = 5 cos [2π t + π/4].
At t = 1.5 s, calculate the (a) displacement, (b) speed and (c) acceleration of the body
3.A spring balance has a scale that reads from 0 to 50 kg. The length of the scale is 20 cm. A body suspended from this balance, when displaced and released, oscillates with a period of 0.6 s. What is the weight of the body ?
4.A simple pendulum of length l and having a bob of mass M is suspended in a car. The car is moving on a circular track of radius R with a uniform speed v.If the pendulum makes small oscillations in a radial direction about its equilibrium position, what will be its time period ?
5.A 5 kg collar is attached to a spring of spring constant 500 N m–1. It slides without friction over a horizontal rod. The collar is displaced from its equilibrium position by 10.0 cm and released. Calculate (a) the period of oscillation,(b) the maximum speed and (c) maximum acceleration of the collar.
