“Coping With The Boko Haram Insurgency” is a two part Documentary filmed in Nigeria in the aftermath of the #BringBackOurGirls Campaign in Chibok, produced by Kayode Ogundamisi and Hona Africa.
Part one, "Reclaiming Maiduguri" focuses on Maiduguri, a 30 minute drive from Sambisa, the stronghold of Boko Haram. It examines how the people are trying to survive and coping with the Boko Haram insurgency in the town. It looks at the contributions of volunteers from a variety of sectors including healthcare and education as well as NGO organizations that refuse to leave the supposedly dangerous areas. It also looks at how the people have been surviving, featuring discussions with members of public in markets in Maiduguri, and an opportunity to see places that have been targeted by Boko Haram terrorists.
Part one also shows the relic of the mosque which was founded by the late leader and Founder of Boko Haram Mohammed Yusuf, where he used to live, at the railway compound. He used to rally and address thousands of followers and people at the site which was the foundation of the Boko Haram movement. These areas are seen as unsafe and not accessible to journalists, even those chaperoned by the Nigerian Military, as local residents are still viewed as still being sympathetic to Boko Haram.
The Documentary explains the urban nature of the insurgency and the often misunderstood collaboration between military and the local/civilian Joint Task Force. The civilian JTF are volunteers who have organized themselves into vigilante groups to address the Boko Haram insecurity in Maiduguri and the Documentary will focus a bit on how they operate. Kayode also spoke with the Borno State Attorney General on the legitimacy of a vigilante militia in the state.
Part two of the Documentary, Inside The IDP Camps" focuses entirely on the Internally Displaced Persons; their new lives as refugees, their living conditions, their experiences of being displaced, their suffering and how they have overcome the challenges. Part Two also includes interviews with volunteers working in the camps based in Maiduguri and Abuja, which are a reflection of other IDPs camps across Nigeria. It concludes with an exclusive interview with the Special Assistant on Media to the President of Nigeria, Mr. Femi Adesina.
The Documentary succinctly describes and shows the resilience of people in the face of adversity, and also in some ways, how ordinary and regular the lives of those affected by the violence really are. Yet even with their “ordinary lives” the stories of survival are in fact extraordinary.
The Documentary reveals the shocking fact that Boko Haram was initially supported by large numbers of people, who genuinely thought that the preaching of Boko Haram founder provided an alternative to the neglect of Nigerian governments over the decades. It focuses on this in particular with regards to the corruption of and impoverishment of Northern Nigeria by the Northern economic and political elite. The film also shows how people have accepted the crisis as a way of life, and developed ways in which to cope and to survive. As illustrated through the interviews, a lot of residents said they could differentiate between the gun shots of the Nigerian Military with those from that of the terrorists and planned their activities and lives accordingly.
‘Coping with The Boko Haram Insurgency’ shows that corruption remains an issue in the IDP camps. There are large number of children who are out of school given that schools have been closed for over two years in Maiduguri, an after effect of The Chibok Girls kidnapping. Alternatives to educate the children and prepare them for the future remains are few and far between despite the efforts of NGOs.
The people of Maiduguri need help and support in order for them to go beyond coping with Boko Haram to finally living without them completely.

Rescuers said on Tuesday morning that they have found signs of life in the passenger ship that was carrying 458 people when it sank in China's Yangtze River on Monday.
Ten people have been rescued as of Tuesday morning, and rescuers are battling strong winds and downpour to hunt for the others on the ship.
The ship, which departed from the eastern Chinese city Nanjing and was bound for Chongqing Municipality in southwest China, sank "within one or two minutes" after being caught in a cyclone, according to the ship's captain and chief engineer.
The incident occurred at around 9:28 p.m. Monday in the Jianli (Hubei Province) section of the Yangtze, China's longest river, according to the Yangtze River navigation administration.
Authorities have located the site where the ship sank. Part of the ship, which turned upside down, has emerged. More than 30 boats have been dispatched for the rescue.
Maritime authorities said most of the passengers are elderly people who signed up on a travel tour in Shanghai.
There were 406 passengers, five travel agency tour guides and 47 crew members aboard, according to the administration. All passenger boarded from Nanjing.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered a work team of the State Council to rush to the site to guide search and rescue work, and ordered Hubei, Chongqing and relevant parties to carry out all-out search and rescue efforts and properly handle the aftermath.
He also ordered beefing up public safety measures and ensuring the safety of people's lives.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has instructed a work team of the State Council to rush to the site to guide search and rescue work and ordered the Ministry of Transport and other relevant parties to mobilize all resources available to speed up the search and rescue work and the treatment of the rescued victims.
On behalf of Xi, Li Keqiang has left for the site of the accident to guide rescue and emergency handling affairs.

Nigeria, officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a federal constitutional republic comprising 36 states and its Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Nigeria is located in West Africa and shares land borders with the Republic of Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east, and Niger in the north. Its coast in the south lies on the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean.
Present-day Nigeria has been the site of numerous kingdoms and tribal states spanning over a millennium. The modern state has its origins in British colonization during the late 19th to early 20th centuries, with the merging of the Southern Nigeria Protectorate and Northern Nigeria Protectorate. During the colonial period, the British set up administrative and legal structures whilst retaining traditional chiefdoms. Nigeria achieved independence in 1960, but plunged into a two-year civil war several years later. It has since alternated between democratically-elected civilian governments and military dictatorships, with its 2011 presidential elections being viewed as the first to be conducted reasonably freely and fairly.
Nigeria is often referred to as the "Giant of Africa", owing to its large population and economy. With approximately 174 million inhabitants, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the seventh most populous country in the world. Nigeria has one of the largest populations of youth in the world. The country is inhabited by over 500 ethnic groups, of which the three largest are the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba. Regarding religion, Nigeria is roughly divided in half between Christians, who live mostly in the southern and central parts of the country, and Muslims, concentrated mostly in the northern and southwestern regions. A minority of the population practice religions indigenous to Nigeria, such as those native to Igbo and Yoruba peoples.
In 2014, Nigeria's economy (GDP) became the largest in Africa, worth more than $500 billion, and overtook South Africa to become the world's 21st largest economy. Furthermore, the debt-to-GDP ratio is only 11 percent (8 percent below the 2012 ratio). By 2050, Nigeria is expected to become one of the world's top 20 economies. The country's oil reserves have played a major role in its growing wealth and influence. Nigeria is considered to be an emerging market by the World Bank and has been identified as a regional power in Africa. It is also a member of the MINT group of countries, which are widely seen as the globe's next "BRIC-like" economies. It is also listed among the "Next Eleven" economies set to become among the biggest in the world. Nigeria is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the African Union, OPEC, and the United Nations among other international organizations.
The Nok people of Northern Nigeria produced the earliest terracotta sculptures found in the country. The Nok civilization flourished between 500 B.C. and 200 A.D. In the northern part of the country, Kano and Katsina have a recorded history dating to around 999 AD. Hausa kingdoms and the Kanem-Bornu Empire prospered as trade posts between North and West Africa.
The Yoruba kingdoms of Ife and Oyo in southwestern Nigeria became prominent in the 12th and 14th centuries, respectively. The oldest signs of human settlement at Ife's current site date back to the 9th century, and its material culture includes terracotta and bronze figures.
Oyo, at its territorial zenith in the late 17th to early 18th centuries, extended its influence from western Nigeria to modern-day Togo. The Edo Kingdom of Benin is located in southwestern Nigeria. Benin's power lasted between the 15th and 19th centuries. Their dominance reached as far as the city of Eko (an Edo name later changed to Lagos by the Portuguese) and further.
The Kingdom of Nri of the Igbo people consolidated in the 10th century and continued until it lost its sovereignty to the British in 1911. Nri was ruled by the Eze Nri, and the city of Nri is considered to be the foundation of Igbo culture. Nri and Aguleri, where the Igbo creation myth originates, are in the territory of the Umeuri clan. Members of the clan trace their lineages back to the patriarchal king-figure Eri. In West Africa, the oldest bronzes made using the lost-wax process were from Igbo Ukwu, a city under Nri influence.

Two girls blew themselves up on Monday near a crowded mosque in northeast Nigeria's biggest city, killing about 30 people, witnesses said.
It is the fourth suicide bombing this month in Maiduguri, which is the birthplace of the Boko Haram Islamic extremist group.
Fishmonger Idi Idrisa said one teenager exploded as she approached the mosque crowded with people from the nearby Baga Road fish market, performing afternoon prayers during the holy month of Ramadan.
The second teen appeared to run away and blew up further away, killing only herself, he said.
Civilian defense fighter, Sama Ila Abu, said he counted at least 30 corpses as he helped to collect the dead.
Both men said said there were many injured being sent to the hospitals.
Boko Haram has kidnapped hundreds and hundreds of girls and women and the numbers of female suicide bombers has raised fears that it is using the captives in its campaign.
A military bomb disposal expert has told the AP that most bombs carried by girls and women have remote devices, meaning the carrier cannot control the explosion.
Boko Haram has stepped up attacks since Nigeria's new President Muhammadu Buhari announced the military command center is moving from Abuja, the capital in central Nigeria, to Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.
The attacks come as Nigeria and its neighbors are preparing to strengthen a multinational army that this year drove Boko Haram out of the towns and villages where it had set up a so-called Islamic caliphate.
But bombings and hit-and-run attacks have continued, along with cross-border raids.
On Thursday, a group of the extremists attacked two towns in neighboring Niger, setting homes ablaze and killing at least 40 people, the government said.
In its first attack on Chad, suicide bombers a week ago simultaneously attacked two buildings including the national police academy in N'Djamena, the Chadian capital, killing at least 33 people and wounding more than 100 others.

Thousands of disgruntled French teenagers have signed a petition claiming that a question about Ian McEwan’s Atonement in their baccalaureate English paper was “impossible” and calling on the education minister to instruct examiners not to count the marks, or lack thereof.
Arthur, a 17-year-old French student behind the petition, told BFMTV: “Many people didn’t understand the word ‘coping’; it’s not a very common word.”
The petition complained: “The majority of students in the bac were not able to answer Question M because they found it too difficult, with words only someone bilingual or with an excellent level in English could answer."

The ceasefire agreement reached between the Nigerian government and Boko Haram has again been broken by the group as terrorists are said to have beheaded six people along the Biu-Garkida Road in Borno State.
Suspected members of the sect also invaded Sondi village in the Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State leaving at least 14 people dead, Punch reports. The Executive Director of Stefanos Foundation, Mr. Mark Lipdo confirmed the beheading saying:
“Information says in spite of the ceasefire agreement with the insurgents, at about 12 and 1pm, six innocent civilians were held hands bound and slaughtered on the Biu-Garkida road of Borno State yesterday (Friday). "
"The bodies were left lying there for a long time on the spot, where the Emir of Gwoza was killed months ago.”
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters confirmed on Friday, October 17 that it had agreed to a ceasefire with the sect after the move was initially announced by Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh.
However, since then Boko Haram has also carried out attacks on Abadam village and Dzur, both also in Borno State, leaving at least 9 people dead.
