People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet's Teachings and Jihad (Arabic: جماعة اهل السنة للدعوة والجهاد, Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati Wal-Jihad), better known by its Hausa name Boko Haram, is a jihadist terrorist organization based in the northeast of Nigeria. It is an Islamist movement which strongly opposes man-made laws. Founded by Mohammed Yusuf in 2001 or 2002, the organisation is a Muslim sect that seeks to abolish the secular system of government and establish sharia law in the country. The group is also known for attacking Christian churches.
The movement, whose name in the Hausa language, Boko Haram, translates as "Western education is sinful" is divided into three factions, and in 2011, was responsible for at least 450 killings in Nigeria.
Though the group first became known internationally following sectarian violence in Nigeria in 2009, it does not have a clear structure or evident chain of command. Moreover, it is still a matter of debate whether Boko Haram has links to terror outfits outside Nigeria and its fighters have frequently clashed with Nigeria's central government.

Chad's Fight Against Boko Haram

Boko Haram’s terror has spread beyond Nigeria’s borders. In mid-June the recently declared Islamic State-affiliate staged two suicide attacks in the Chadian capital N’djamena, killing 23 people. The expanding threat posed by the militant group was answered earlier this year by a regional coalition of forces from Chad, Niger, and Cameroon who agreed to assist Nigeria’s own beleaguered army.
Chad’s contingent of 5,000 soldiers has advanced the furthest into Nigeria. One of the most experienced fighting forces in the region, Chad says they’ve killed hundreds of Boko Haram militants while losing few of their own troops.
Meanwhile, thousands of refugees and displaced people have sought shelter in Chad’s Lake Region, which houses some of most destitute communities in one of the poorest countries in the world.
VICE News reported from across the region, speaking to soldiers and refugees.

Nigeria has been making moves against Boko Haram, which began an armed rebellion against the government in 2009. So far, nearly 20,000 people have died.
New Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari ordered an immediate shake-up with the heads of the army, navy, air force and his chief of defense staff replaced in an effort to re-energize the fight against Boko Haram.
In response, the militants have stepped up their attacks. Previous attacks like the one in Gamboru Ngala, where at least 300 residents were killed in a horrific 12-hour spree in May 2014, or the still infamous taking of hundreds of school girls in April that same year are still fresh in the memory.
There have been efforts to lift the army’s morale with thousands of troops reinstated, including at least 3,032 soldiers who had been dismissed for alleged indiscipline brought back into the military fold.
The militancy has now become a regional issue, having spilled over into Nigeria’s neighboring countries. Troops from Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger have been battling the terrorists in recent months. Will new measures work to stamp out the Takfiri group or is it a case of too little, too late?

The Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram released a video online on Tuesday, rejecting the claims of the Nigerian military that it has been routed by a four-nation offensive, which doesn’t show Abubakar Shekau the group’s leader.
The speaker in the 10-minute message which was posted on the video-sharing site YouTube said “Most of our territory is still under our control”. He called Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger, who have been battling the Islamists, “the lying coalition partners”.
The video bears the new logo “Islamic State in West Africa” and follows the Nigerian militants’ pledge of allegiance in an audio message in March to the IS group, that has overrun large parts of Syria and Iraq.
The message is the first video released by the terrorist group since February, when Shekau vowed to disrupt Nigeria’s elections.
Shekau has featured prominently in most of the group’s videos over the last three years and his absence in the latest message will likely stir further debate on his whereabouts or possible death.
Nigeria’s military has claimed to have killed Shekau only for him to pop up on another video.
The speaker in the new message appears in front of two pick-up trucks, with four other gunmen visible in the background.
He speaks in the Hausa language that is dominant in northern Nigeria with Arabic and English subtitles.
An AK-47 rifle rests on his chest as he seeks to rebuke the claims of successes made in recent weeks by the military.
“The armies claim through the media that they captured our towns and that they assaulted Sambisa (forest) and defeated us,” he said, referring to the bushland area in Nigeria’s northeast Borno state that has been an Islamist stronghold.
“I swear by Allah that I am talking right now from Sambisa… Here in Sambisa you can travel more than four to five hours under the black flag of Islam by car or by motorbike.”
The video further shows gruesome violence, including executions of apparent civilians and one man in a Nigeria police uniform, who are shot at close range.
It was reported that on March 7, 2015 the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, in an audio message pledged allegiance to the richest and, probably, most powerful terrorist group Islamic State (ISIS).
The terrorist group recently stormed two Yobe towns, burning down a police station and several government buildings.

In a new video released late Friday night, Abubakar Shekau dashed hopes for a prisoner exchange to get the girls released. "The issue of the girls is long forgotten because I have long ago married them off," he said, laughing. "In this war, there is no going back," he said in the video received by The Associated Press in the same way as previous messages. Nigeria's chief of defense staff, Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh, on Oct. 17 announced that Boko Haram had agreed to an immediate cease-fire to end a 5-year-old insurgency that has killed thousands of people and driven hundreds of thousands from their homes in northeast Nigeria. But attacks and abductions have continued with the extremists this week seizing Mubi, a town of more than 200,000 people. One 16-year-old Nigerian girl, who was among about 50 students who managed to escape after being abducted by Boko Haram militants three weeks ago, has spoken about the events of the night militants stormed into the Chibok Government Girls Secondary School.
The girl said the students in the dorm could hear the sound of gunshots from a nearby town. When armed men in uniforms burst in and said they would rescue them, the girls thought they were soldiers.
However, the gunmen then marched the students outside and removed all of the food from the school storeroom before lighting it on fire.
"They ... started shouting, 'Allahu Akhbar,' [God is great]," the 16-year-old student said. "And we knew."
The militants drove the girls away through the dense forest, where some 50 girls managed to escape. According to one girl, the last car in the convoy carrying fighters with weapons broke down, and she and a friend took the opportunity to jump from their pickup truck. They ran just as the last vehicle's lights came back on.
Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for the kidnappings, recently claiming that they will sell the girls.
Of the almost 300 girls who were taken, 276 are still missing. One intermediary who has been communicating with the militants said at least two have died of snakebite, and about 20 others are ill.
One official who was interviewed said he received a warning cell phone call at around 11:00 p.m. the night of the kidnappings, saying that 200 militants on 20 pickup trucks and more than 30 motorcycles were headed toward the town of Chibok.
The official alerted soldiers and warned residents to flee, but help came too late. When it did, the soldiers were outnumbered and outgunned by the militants. After the soldiers ran out of ammunition, they fled, allowing the militants to advance toward the girls' school.

"In a video message apparently made by the leader of the Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of hundreds of schoolgirls nearly three weeks ago, called them slaves and threatened to "sell them in the market, by Allah."
"Western education should end," Mr. Shekau said in the 57-minute video, speaking in Hausa and Arabic. "Girls, you should go and get married." The Islamist leader also warned that he would "give their hands in marriage because they are our slaves. We would marry them out at the age of 9. We would marry them out at the age of 12."
The message was received by news agencies in Nigeria on Monday and is similar to previous videos purportedly from Boko Haram."* Ana Kasparian, Michael Shure (Al Jazeera America), and Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show) break it down on The Young Turks.
