The Caribbean (pronounced /ˌkærɨˈbiːən/ or /kəˈrɪbiən/) is a crescent-shaped group of islands more than 2,000 miles (3,200 km) long separating the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, to the west and south, from the Atlantic Ocean, to the east and north. From the peninsula of Florida on the mainland of the United States, the islands stretch 1,200 miles (1,900 km) southeastward, then 500 miles (800 km) south, then west along the north coast of Venezuela on the South American mainland.
Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region comprises more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. These islands generally form island arcs that delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea.

10 Most Beautiful Islands in the World
Hey guys, this video is about the 10 most beautiful islands in the WORLD.!
And man are they a paradise! The thought of islands almost always conjures up images of
impeccable beaches, bright flowers and lush rainforests.
While those are certainly beautiful, not all of Earth's islands are located in the
Caribbean or South Pacific. In the new book "The 10 Best of Everything," National
Geographic combed the globe's maritime locations, compiling a list of the world's 10 best islands,
showing that the shores of the U.K. can hold their own against the likes of Thailand and Polynesia.

#7 Sailing the Caribbean: Puerto Rico to the US Virgin Island's
On this episode, we cruise along the south coast of Puerto Rico and eventually land at Palmas Del Mar Marina. We then spend a few days on Vieques, then Culebra before crossing over to the USVI's and St. Thomas - just in time for the end of the 2015 Virgin Island's Carnival and the fireworks show that was launched from a barge only 850 feet off our bow.
On this episode, we cruise along the south coast of Puerto Rico and eventually land at Palmas Del Mar Marina. The Caribbean Islands - Those Islands of Eden, set in the crystal waters of the Caribbean, await you. The U.S. Virgins to Trinidad - each with its own magic and mystery - captured for you through the lense of a premier travelogue filmmaker.
Diving into the sea depths, horseback exploring in the jungle and para-sailing above the palms are just three of the soul of the Caribbean.
The remains of forgotten Sugar Plantations, exotic animals and flowers, native markets and world-class shopping are all part of the West Indies Chronical.
Bask in warmth of the sun, sand sea - and people - of one of the world's most pleasure-filled destinations.
Cooled by the constant trade winds with scents of flowers and spice filling the air, the Caribbean Islands may seem like the islands of Eden. With our eyes dazzled by white beaches, lapis skies and crystal waters, it's easy to forget that the history of these islands is filled with the times of bloody pirates and sugar plantations that created their great wealth from the labor of slaves. We tour these islands, absorbing both the beauty and heritage of this part of the world.
On St. Thomas, we see luxury hotels, Blackbeard's Castle and visit old Ft. Christian. We also relax at Magens Bay, one of the classical beaches of the Caribbean, and go shopping in the duty-free city of Charlotte Amalie. We also visit the underwater inhabitants of Coral World.
On St. John, we arrive in Cruise Bay and quickly submerge ourselves in the mangrove forests of Virgin Island National Park to see some of its creatures. On the north side of the island, we "flightsee" over and around the beaches.
On Virgin Gorda, we explore and picnic in the grottoes between the enormous boulders and go parasailing for another bird's-eye view.
We stop at Buck Island to snorkel amid kissingfish, clownfish, globefish, shark, yellow-finned tuna and lobsters in the only underwater park in the U.S. National Park system.
On St. Croix, we stop at the capital city of Christiansted and explore old Fort Christiansvaern. We also see the mouth of the Salt River where Columbus landed, and go by horseback into the highlands to explore the ruins of an old sugar plantation, and the beautifully preserved Whim Plantation to see how plantation life was lived.
The Island of St. Maarten/San Martine, we meet the people (and goats) on the French side and leave by boat for a tour of the island of St. Barts.
Saba is one of the smallest of the inhabited islands of the Caribbean. We climb its unique road experts called impossible to build.
On St. Kitts, we tour the fort of Brimstone Hill and join the local people for market. We also watch batik-making with the designs of tradition.
On Martinique, we explore its capital city of Fort-de-France with its huge park and gardens with astonishing displays of flowers and a statue of Josephine, Napoleon's empress.
On Barbados, we're just in time for church on Harvest Sunday. We visit Bridgetown and meet people on the beach. Along the northern coast of Barbados, we tour the caves of the animal flowers. We also take a tramway tour of Harrison's Cave with it's freshwater streams flowing through it, and Sam Lord's Castle, hearing how he lured unwary ships into the cliffs for their bounty. We follow the sugar cane harvest and see how cane sugar is processed.
The Island of Grenada is filled with stories of how people live;native fishermen, holiday celebrations spent at the beach, native boat building and a game of cricket played in the jungle. We tour the island, discover exotic fruits, attend market and envelope ourselves in a tropical storm. We also see remnants of the thwarted attempt by Russia.

ISLAND ORDER!
10. Islands of the Andaman Sea, Thailand
9. Tahiti, French Polynesia
8. Channel Islands, United States
7. Capri, Italy
6. Lord Howe Island, Australia
5. Fair Isle, Scotland

Basking in the Caribbean sun, the island of Cuba lies between sun and socialism, rumba and revolution. Havana is the capital. In 1553, the Spanish conquerors designated Havana’s harbour as a collection point for ships loaded with gold and silver from the new Spanish colonies and named the settlement, San Cristobal De La Habana.La Bodeguita Del Medio was once Hemmingway`s local and nowhere else is the ‘Mojito’ mixed better: three year old white rum, lime juice, soda, sugar, ice and mint. Whether it be the Teatro Marti, the Old Tobacco Factory, the famous Bacardi house, or the Floridita Bar, everywhere there

The two islands Grande Terre and Basse Terre form the French Caribbean Island Guadeloupe like two butterfly wings, separated only by a narrow channel. The modern infrastructure and the good food are mixed with the local culture. Gwoka is the music of Guadeloupe, which is reminiscent of slavery.
Located on the lesser Antilles, Guadeloupe is the French part of the Caribbean and belongs to the European Union. It consists out of different islands: Grande Terre consists of limestone with long beautiful beaches, Basse Terre is a mountainous island with extensive rainforest and the volcano, la Soufrière. Cuba is the pearl of the Caribbean Sea. Thanks to the colonial past, Havana - the capital - has plenty of palaces, nice mansions, cathedrals, strong forts, and shady alleys. On the streets the automobiles of the 50’s from United States create a huge contrast with the coaches. Trinidad is full of palaces built by the sugar barons, while Santa Clara is the town of the legendary revolutionary, Che Guevara. Guama shows us an Indian village and a crocodile farm, Varadero offers white, sandy beaches shaded by large palm trees and luxury hotels. In the Tropicana, the band is moving to a heartwarming music. BonaireBest travelguide to Bonaire, Dutch Caribbean
Travel video about destination Cuba.
Whether it be the Teatro Marti, the Old Tobacco Factory, the famous Bacardi house, or the Floridita Bar, everywhere there is a feeling of nostalgia. When the Daiquiri is served, one almost expects Fidel Castro to be sitting at the next table. Pinar Del Rio is a small but busy town in which the Red Star and portraits of Che Guevara are displayed for all to see. In the old town, colourful houses with beautiful pillared corridors demonstrate the former wealth of the country’s independent tobacco growers. Time means little here. While observing life on the streets, one begins to think in the same relaxed tempo of the leisurely-smoked cigars. A visit to a tobacco factory is a must. Cuba’s cigars are world famous. Together with sugar, tobacco is the country’s most important export. The oldest geological formation in Cuba are the Mogotes, well-weathered limestone peaks which, supported by pillars, once covered a large complex of caves. Over many decades, subterranean rivers flooded the earth below and thus created these gigantic grottos. On seven manmade islands in the centre of the Cienaga De Zapata National Park, is the Indian village of Guama. This swampy nature reserve with its dense mangrove forest vegetation offers an ideal sanctuary for many rare water birds. No Cuban town has changed as little in two hundred years than that of Trinidad. In the 18th century, the city experienced great wealth and recognition due to the cultivation of sugar cane and the luxurious palaces and villas of the sugar barons still leave their mark on the city. Rich green tropical forests, tobacco country at the foot of mysterious mountain caves, humid tropical swamps, history, cigars and rum. Cuba is a colourful cocktail

Exploring Amazing Cozumel, Mexico: Island Paradise in the Caribbean
There are also the smaller islands of Marie-Galante and La Désirade, and the Îles des Saintes.
When Christopher Columbus came to Guadeloupe in 1463, the existing populations were the Caribs. But Christopher Columbus did not stay, because the Spanish wanted to discover larger islands. The smaller island in the Caribbean were colonized by the British and French, so in 1635 Guadeloupe by the French. It was mainly farmers from Normandie, Brittany and Charente settled on the island and cultivated Coffee and sugarcane plantations. Slavery was abolished in 1794, but it was reintroduced by Napoleon in 1802 because of the cheap labour and lasted until 1848.
The civilization today is creole, a melting pot: French, the descendants of black slaves, Indian immigrants, Syrian-Libanese immigrants and nowadays Chinese immigrants. Creole cuisine is a mixture of European food with African ingredients, oriental flavours and products from the Caribbean.
Gwoka is the traditional music on Guadeloupe, but not only music and danse, but also the joy of life and a reminder of the time of slavery
-------
Caribbean Moments shows a different side to the Caribbean. Everyone visualises sand, sunshine and palm trees – but hardly anyone really discovers what lies behind them. In fact an unbelievable variety of cultures, music and religions has developed as a result of the different influences – African, Indian, English, French and authentically Caribbean.
This documentary series attempts to portray the people - be they the Rastas, who have a lot to say about their mission, the Amerindians in Trinidad, who still have their own Queen, or the Black Caribs – a mixture of escaped slaves and Caribs.
In addition, of course, there’s a huge variety of music: steelpan, parang, calypso, soca and chutney soca shape Trinidad, whilst other islands are especially scenically beautiful, such as Dominica, which is actually a single rain forest and which seduces with its abundant vegetation. Here too are the true Caribs, who occupy themselves with traditional boat building in the same way as their ancestors did centuries ago.
The films were produced in 6 parts to create a documentary series that shows what lies beneath the surface.

In the famous bars, as the Floridita or the Bodaguita, we can remember Hemingway, and drink from the local rum or the cocktails prepared from it, moreover we can light a good Cuban cigar as well.

This is a recording of past webinar on 19th of August 2015.
Flooding from extreme rainfall events is one of the major natural hazards affecting Jamaica and other small island states in the Caribbean. Jamaica has already experienced several major floods and climate-related hazards in the last decade; the social and economic cost of which has been estimated at US$18.6 billion. Increases in the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events associated with climate change are a major risk to national infrastructure, development progress and the welfare of vulnerable communities.

Tropical Storm Erika is drifting west toward the Caribbean, and forecasters say it could become a hurricane and brush close to Florida early next week.
Tropical storm watches were posted Tuesday for some islands in the east Caribbean. At 11 a.m. ET, Erika packed winds of 45 mph and was about 700 miles east of the Leeward Islands.
The Weather Channel reported that Erika could strengthen to a minor hurricane by Saturday, as it passes near the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba.
From there, the storm's strength and path will depend on whether it passes over land and weakens, and on how it interacts with atmospheric wind patterns. Forecasters are advising people Florida and the Southeast to keep an eye on the storm.

Newly minted Tropical Storm Erika is forecast to strengthen into hurricane by this weekend and aim toward the southern Bahamas.
South Florida likely will find itself in the cone of uncertainty later today as the projected path brings the system within 200 miles of Miami on Sunday. However, where it ultimately will go remains uncertain.
WHAT FLORIDA CAN EXPECT: It's too early to say.

PARTICULARS: Erika is now in a favorable enviroment for strengthening as it's over warm waters and wind shear is low. For that reason, it is predicted to grow into a Category 1 hurricane with top winds of 80 mph within five days.
After that, it should encounter wind shear, which could cause it to weaken. Also, it could be hampered if it plows over the mountains of Hispaniola, said senior hurricane specialist Michael Brennan.

Hurricane Danny twirled toward the Caribbean Sunday as forecasters cautioned that some famous get-away destinations could see deluges.
The tempest - downsized from a typhoon - was relied upon to convey two to four crawls (five to ten centimeters) of downpour to the Leeward Islands, the US and British Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico through Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center said.

Villa Caymanas is located on Grand Cayman's northern coastline, which provides a quintessential laid back Caribbean lifestyle of peace & tranquility combined with breathtaking ocean views across the Caribbean Sea. North Side has a welcoming sense of community retaining much of the charm & character of a bygone day when Cayman was known as the Islands that time forgot.
Given its post modern design of simple clean lines the provenance of Villa Caymanas is surprising to some when they learn that the genesis of its creation was a set of 18th century Chinese doors around which Houston architect Benson Ford was commissioned to bring this architectural delight to life. Not only is the property architecturally appealing but it has been thoughtfully designed to make the most of its natural location, catching the trade wind breezes, as well providing expansive panoramic ocean views, much of the local vegetation has been retained & added to, creating shade & protection from the elements.
The antique Chinese doors give an auspicious entrance to the property & open on to a delightful sitting area designed specifically to provide a cool place to enjoy an afternoon drink & book, the "breeze way" leads through a shaded colonnaded area & into the back garden which presents a raised lap pool, lush vegetation & a stone staircase down to the ocean. The main living areas are all on the upper floor making the most of the extraordinary ocean views, which are front & centre as soon as you enter the property on this level. The airy sense of space & light is accentuated by the open plan design & the twelve foot ceilings as well as the bank of windows that lead directly onto the sun terrace that spans the width of the building & gives ample room for every aspect of outdoor living, whether it be alfresco dining, sunbathing, morning coffee or evening cocktails whilst watching the sunset, this area is designed for living & admiring natures beauty. The expanse of this terrace means that both the kitchen & master bedroom also enjoy direct access onto it so whether you are cooking or laying in bed the panoramic view of the Caribbean Sea is there to be enjoyed. As well as the spectacular ocean views the fitted kitchen has plenty of counter space & cupboards, a centre island & good quality appliances including a wine chiller. The master bedroom is located in the west wing of the property providing a sanctuary of relaxation. It has a large well fitted walk though closet with dressing area, this leads onto to a large bathroom with a huge walk-in shower which joins two separate "his & hers" bathroom areas which enjoy their own sinks & toilets. The upstairs level also provides a guest bedroom with ensuite bathroom. The ground floor accommodation comprises two guest suites each with ensuite bathroom, a well equipped fitness studio & a home office. To the front of the property there are two garages, one on either side of the property & a total of four storage/utility rooms.
The property was built in 2001 using the latest technology & is constructed entirely of 3D Panels® which consist of a four inch foam centre sandwiched between a galvanized steel mesh which is used to create stability & strength once the concrete is applied to the interior and exterior surfaces., it also provides great insulating qualities resulting in low energy bills. Other eco friendly features of the home include a 6,400 gallon water cistern.

Captain Marjan Golobic exploring the San Blas Islands
This is a recording of past webinar on 19th of August 2015.
Flooding from extreme rainfall events is one of the major natural hazards affecting Jamaica and other small island states in the Caribbean. Jamaica has already experienced several major floods and climate-related hazards in the last decade; the social and economic cost of which has been estimated at US$18.6 billion. Increases in the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events associated with climate change are a major risk to national infrastructure, development progress and the welfare of vulnerable communities.
Despite this very real threat, current flood maps in Jamaica are out of date, education on flood safety is poor and adaptive capacity in flood-prone communities is low. A new project, implemented by the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, is attempting to tackle these deficiencies.
In this webinar, hosted by CDKN, Dr Arpita Mandal of UWI presented the results from this research project which focused on the vulnerable communities along the Yallahs river, as well as communities around the Orange River watershed in Negril. The project aimed to create improved flood preparedness models for these two watersheds, using information from past extreme rainfall events to create maps to plan for future flood risk. The ultimate goal was to model extreme events and create five, ten and 25-year flood risk maps for both present and future climate projections. In the webinar, Dr Mandal also discussed the the challenges that communities are facing as a result of climate change and the importance of working with communities and adapting the results of models to their daily lives.
About the presenter
Dr Arpita Mandal is a lecturer in the Department of Geography and Geology, University of the West Indies, Mona Campus in Kingston, Jamaica. She has a PhD in Geology with a specialisation in Hydrogeology and Geochemistry and she is a teacher in the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Her work aims to understand the impact of climate change on the water sector in the Caribbean islands. Dr Mandal’s current work focuses on National Adaptation Strategies for the water sector for the islands of Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda. Ongoing work also involves the Climate Change and Adaptation Strategy for the Agriculture sector for Jamaica. Dr Mandal’s research been published in academic journals as well as in consultancies both within and outside the Caribbean.

Whale hunting was an important part of the local economy. Today there is an agreement with greenpeace to hunt four Humpback whales a year for the own consumption.
Life in Crusoe, the capital of Domenica, is much more hectic. It has the unofficial name “The Nature Island”. Domenica is very mountainous and has a lot of rivers and waterfalls. Chistopher Columbus did not set a food on the island, but gave her its name from “Domingo”, Sunday, Domenica was the last island colonised by the Europeans because of the resistance of the caribs. St Vincent and Domenica have the only Carib reservations in the whole Caribbean. It is here that the descendants of the people who gave the name to the region continued to live. They are the last reminents who long resisted the colonial ambition of the European and never allowed to be enslaved

Pan American World Airways, known from its founding until 1950 as Pan American Airways and commonly known as Pan Am, was the principal and largest international air carrier in the United States from 1927 until its collapse on December 4, 1991. Founded in 1927 as a scheduled air mail and passenger service operating between Key West, Florida, and Havana, Cuba, the airline became a major company credited with many innovations that shaped the international airline industry, including the widespread use of jet aircraft, jumbo jets, and computerized reservation systems. It was also a founding member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the global airline industry association.Identified by its blue globe logo, the use of the word "Clipper" in aircraft names and call signs, and the white pilot uniform caps, the airline was a cultural icon of the 20th century. In an era dominated by flag carriers that were wholly or majority government-owned, it was also the unofficial flag carrier of the United States. During most of the jet era, Pan Am's flagship terminal was the Worldport located at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.

The geography and climate in the Caribbean region varies: Some islands in the region have relatively flat terrain of non-volcanic origin. These islands include Aruba (possessing only minor volcanic features), Barbados, Bonaire, the Cayman Islands, Saint Croix, the Bahamas, and Antigua. Others possess rugged towering mountain-ranges like the islands of Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Dominica, Montserrat, Saba, Saint Kitts, Saint Lucia, Saint Thomas, Saint John, Tortola, Grenada, Saint Vincent, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Trinidad & Tobago.

Travel video about destination Cuba.

Fast-paced Erika is projected to move across the northern end of the eastern Caribbean islands early on Thursday, angle north of Puerto Rico on Friday and arrive in the central Bahamas on Sunday.
Models hint that the system might turn east of Florida on Sunday or Monday, but that is not assured.
Erika is the fifth named storm of the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season. On average, the fifth named storm arrives on Aug. 31.

St. Vincent belongs to the Windward-Islands and it is located in the north of Trinidad and Tobago. The volcanic island lies north of the small island Bequia, which is strongly influenced by whaling.
Because of its diverse flora and fauna, the Caribbean Island Dominica is also known as the nature island. Diseases are cured traditionally by herbs growing here.
St Vincent and the Grenadines are in the Eastern Caribbean Sea. The natives are the descendants of the caribs, which immigrated from Venezuela. St. Vincent is a volcanic Island and forms with forty other islands the island state St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
1498 Christopher Columbus arrived in St. Vincent where the Caribs lived. It remained very long uncolonised It was occupied by the British in the 18th century.
Herbs are used for healing, the very traditional medical knowledge is transmitted from generation to generation. Canoes are constructed from a single treetrunk,
St Vincent and Domenica have the only Carib reservations in the whole Caribbean. It is here that the descendants of the people who gave the name to the region continued to live. They are the last reminents who long resisted the colonial ambition of the European and never allowed to be enslaved

Made in 1958, "Isles of the Caribbean" is a colorful travelogue film of the Caribbean including Haiti, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Curacao, Dominica, pre-revolutionary Cuba, and other nations. Rather than show the countries individually, this film shows the region as a whole, intercutting footage from different locations and unifying them with steady narration and a score by Robert Woolridge. The sugar and other industries are shown, as well as historic sights, beaches, and harbors.
