Manenberg is a township of Cape Town South Africa that was created by the apartheid government for low income Coloured families in the Cape Flats. It has an estimated population of 70 000 residents. The area consists of rows of semi-detached houses and project like flats and was established by the municipal council between 1966 and 1970.
In 1975 the area consisted of about seven corner shops and two liquor outlets. There were no adequate commercial facilities or community services. A railway line from the black township of Gugulethu divides Manenberg. Nyanga Railway Station was established to service the growing population of Gugulethu and Manenberg. The outer boundaries can be traced by following Duinefontein Road which runs, for the most part, parallel to the railway line, to where it meets Lansdowne Road to the south and Klipfontein Road to the north.
The streets of Manenberg were named after rivers. The flats or 'courts' were given female names like Nellie or Mathilda Court, with the exception of the old Alpha and Omega Court, both situation at the entry point to Manenberg. . The major road inside Manenberg was called Manenberg Avenue and is still a vibrant avenue filled with cars, minibus taxis and buses.

Jonathan Butler (born 10 October 1961, Athlone, Cape Town, South Africa) is a singer-songwriter and guitarist. His music is often classified as R&B, jazz fusion or worship music.
Born and raised in Cape Town during Apartheid, Butler started singing and playing acoustic guitar as a child. Racial segregation and poverty during Apartheid has been the subject of many of his records. His first single was the first by a black artist played by white radio stations in the racially segregated South Africa and earned a Sarie Award, South Africa's equivalent to the Grammy Awards.
He began touring at the age of seven when he joined a travelling stage show, and was later signed up to perform on a string of hit recordings, turning him into a local teen idol. In 1978 he found the inspiration and encouragement to begin expressing himself as a composer and songwriter when he joined Cape Town's best known jazz/rock outfit, Pacific Express. Two albums were recorded with the Express personnel, and some Pacific Express songs were later released on the 1988 7th Avenue album. All three releases were issued by Mountain Records.

In late December, Loyola Marymount University's "Alternative Breaks" program provided the opportunity for students to travel to Capetown, South Africa.
There, they would immerse themselves into the diverse community of the township "Lavender Hill", which lies on the edge of the Cape Flats, and work alongside community members and The Chaeli Campaign in order to gain an understanding of special needs and disabilities issues in order to explore how to foster positive relations between community members both in South Africa, and back home in the US.
I was fortunate enough to be one of those students.
This is a short documentary that gives a glimpse into the incredibly complex issues that South Africa faces today, and also shows the heroic advocates and champions of social justice for equal rights and treatment of disabled and special needs individuals.
A ridiculous amount of thanks to Chaeli and Zelda Mycroft for being our hosts and guides and inspiring us with their leadership.

Troops may soon be sent in to try to sort out the gang warfare in the South African city of Cape Town.
The country's largest trade union group (COSATU) and the premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, have recently both sent letters to South African president Jacob Zuma, calling for intervention to sort out the problem.
The president's office has said he will take advice from the police on the ground. Soldiers were sent into certain targeted hotspots last December apparently improving safety levels dramatically.
The latest calls come at a time when the violence between gangs appears to be increasing.
More than two dozen people have been killed in the past few months after being caught up in the fighting between the rival gangs.
There was talk of a "truce" between certain gangs but according to those Sky News spoke to there is fighting virtually every night.
The Sky News team managed to gain access to one of the gangs and was given an extraordinary insight into the underbelly of one of South Africa's most beautiful cities.
They told us they were members of "the Americans" - a gang they said had about 100 members.
"Once you are a member, you are in it for life," Nash told Sky News.
"There's no way out."
All the men were out of work. Many had already been in prison, some several times, and they confessed to robbing, mugging and killing to buy food or to feed their drug habit.
"This is tik," Ringo explained to Sky News.
"It's crystal meth and we have to have our tik every day. If we don't get it, we get very aggressive.
"But with tic, we can do anything. I would kill Eyes (the gang's leader) and not even worry about it."
