The area of what is now Mongolia has been ruled by various nomadic empires, including the Xiongnu, the Xianbei, the Rouran, the Gökturks and others. The Mongol Empire was founded by Genghis Khan in 1206. After the collapse of the Yuan Dynasty, the Mongols returned to their earlier pattern of constant internal conflict and occasional raids on the Chinese borderlands. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Mongolia came under the influence of Tibetan Buddhism. At the end of the 17th century, all of Mongolia had been incorporated into the area ruled by the Qing Dynasty. During the collapse of the Qing Dynasty in 1911, Mongolia declared independence, but had to struggle until 1921 to firmly establish de facto independence from the Republic of China, and until 1945 to gain international recognition.

200 y.o Mummy of Buddhist Monk found still in Meditating & Lotus Position discovered in Mongolia
The amazing mummified remains of a man apparently meditating in the lotus position have been unearthed in Mongolia.
A forensic examination is underway on the human relic which is believed to be around 200 years old, after being preserved in animal skin.
'The mummified body sits in a lotus position, as if still meditating,' said a report in The Siberian Times - citing Mongolian accounts of the discovery.
'Experts that only had time to carry basic visual test say they believe the body can be about 200 years old.'
The body was found on 27 January in Songinokhairkhan province, said Mongolia's 'Morning Newspaper'. It was covered in 'cattle skin'.
The human remains are now undergoing forensic examination in capital Ulaanbataar.
Initial speculation is that the mummy could be a teacher of Lama Dashi-Dorzho Itigilov.
Dashi-Dorzho Itigilov, born in 1852, was a Buryat Buddhist Lama of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, best known for the lifelike state of his body.
His remains were reported not to be subject to macroscopic decay.

Modern Nomads (1996): Watch how capitalism has helped raise the incomes of Mongolian nomads
A look at how Mongolia's new capitalism has prompted a nomadic revival.
On the grasslands, it's time to brand the wild ponies. Nomadic farmer, Jamts, is marking out his property. In post-communist Mongolia, nomads are once again permitted to own their own livestock. Inside their traditional ger tent, Jamts' wife, Dorj, prepares the day's fresh milk and cream. With skilful management of their resources, Jamts and Dorj have brought up 13 children. But as Mongolia heads for full blown capitalism, nomads now battle with powerful market forces. Jamts has thrived where many have failed because his enterprising nephew, Mendsaikhan, helps him sell produce in the city. Mendsaikhan takes Jamts' adult daughter, Pagma, back home for a visit. Far away from city nightclubs and medical student life, Pagma falls back into the nomadic routine. Haggling at the market, Mendsaikhan gets a good price for his uncle's sheepskins. Traders like he and Jamts can provide Mongolia's stumbling economy with much needed income. But government advisers believe that the nomadic lifestyle will inevitably collide with economic reform.

Choi Tseveenpurev(Choijiljaviin Tseveenpurev) Mongol Warrior
Choi Tseveenpurev' 11th July 2009
Choijiljavyn "Choi" Tseveenpürev (Mongolian: Чойжилжавын Цэвээнпүрэв; born October 6, 1971 in Ulan Bator, Mongolia) is a featherweight boxer.
Nicknamed the Mongolian Warrior, Choi is a self-styled latter-day Genghis Khan ranked in the top ten featherweights in the world and has been dubbed "Britain's answer to Manny Pacquiao" by the leading UK boxing commentator John Rawling.
On June 6, 2008, he was awarded with the title of 'State Honoured Athlete' by the Mongolian President, Nambaryn Enkhbayar.[1]
He is the current WBU featherweight champion following his destructive win over Derry Mathews in Bolton on April 5, 2008[2], and although a 15-month period of inactivity described as "criminal" by UK publication Boxing News[3] led him to briefly decide to retire, since signing up with Spencer Fearon's Hard Knocks Boxing Promotions in June 2009 he has set his sights on proving himself to be the number one 126lb fighter in the world in the next two years.
In his first fight under the Hard Knocks banner, Choi destroyed Lubos Prehradnik in three rounds on 11 July, his country's Independence Day in front of many of his countrymen who were earlier at London's Naadam celebrations. The crowd was described by boxing pundit Steve Bunce as the most passionate in British boxing for 30 years.
The antithesis of the modern-day protected boxer, Choi began his career with ten-rounders as an away fighter in South Korea and Thailand fighting legendary former and future world champion Veeraphol Sahaprom in only his third contest. This is the only one of his four defeats, all by points verdicts, not regarded as highly contentious.
His boxing career saw him travel to South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia and China before settling in the UK in 2000. Choi is currently trained by Lee Wilkins, having previously worked with Jack Doughty until 2008.
Despite now being in his late 30s, Choi is convinced he is now at his peak and is unbeaten in the last five years stopping eight of his last nine opponents.
-"I am back because in my heart I am not retired. I'm still learning. People think I am old but soon I will be the number one world featherweight." Choi Tseveenpurev in his interview on Steve Bunce's Boxing Hour, June 2009.

India will extend a $1-billion credit line to mineral-rich Mongolia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in Ulan Bator on Sunday, amid a host of agreements in trade and defence as New Delhi tried to strengthen its influence in China’s backyard.
Modi and Mongolian Prime Minister Chimed Saikhanbileg upgraded ties to a “strategic partnership” – a year after a similar agreement between Mongolia and China – with New Delhi asking the land-locked country to partner in its economic transformation while vowing to step up bilateral trade and investment.
"The two Prime Ministers agreed to encourage development of equal and mutually beneficial trade, investment and economic cooperation, which is balanced, sustainable, and leads to prosperity in both countries," a joint statement said.
The PM and Saikhanbileg, who attended the traditional Mongolian Mini Naadam festival together, also noted intensified cooperation in civil nuclear domain, such as societal and industrial applications of radioisotopes, exploration and mining of radioactive minerals in Mongolia, and human resource development.
Dressed in traditional Mongolian costume, topped with a sola hat, Modi said he hoped his visit – a first by an Indian PM -- would usher in closer economic ties with both leaders agreeing to encourage Indian companies to explore opportunities in Mongolia's mining sector through joint ventures and investment.
The PM, who also shot an arrow from a traditional bow and was gifted a Mongolian horse, is on the second-leg of a three-nation Asian tour.
"Mongolia is also an integral part of India's Act East Policy. The destinies of India and Mongolia are closely linked with the future of Asia Pacific region. We can work together to help advance peace, stability and prosperity in this region." Modi said, calling the central Asian nation the new bright light of democracy in the world.
The PM and Saikhanbileg also watched wrestling, archery and horse riding at the Chingisiin Khuree Camp, 25 km from capital Ulan Bator.
Mongolia's economy -- fuelled by a mining boom that led to high rates of growth, peaking at 17.5 percent in 2011-- depends largely on trade with China. Yet it remains wary of China's economic dominance, which has prompted a rise in protectionist government policies and resource nationalism in the country of three million people.
Mongolia has also sought to strengthen relations with Japan and has maintained trading ties with neighbouring Russia, hosting President Vladimir Putin last year.
Infrastructure development in the central Asian nation has been hit by a slowing Chinese coal market and the Indian loan may primarily be used to fund an unfinished rail link from its coal mines in the Gobi desert to overcome bottlenecks in deliveries.
"India will continue to support Mongolia's endeavour to create a business friendly foreign investment regime," it said.
Officials also signed 14 agreements in areas such as policing and surveillance, air services, cyber security, renewable energy and civil nuclear regimes, with New Delhi gifting Ulan Bator with an indigenous cancer treatment machine.
"It is a special privilege to come on the occasion of two important milestones that unite us – 25 years of democracy in Mongolia and 60 years of diplomatic relations between our two nations. We have strong convergence of views on bilateral relations and our regional and international partnership," Modi said.
He later addressed the State Great Hural, the Mongolian Parliament, which was specially convened today on a holiday for the first time for a foreign leader, before visiting a monastery and posting a trademark selfie with Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj on Twitter

My sister told me that I HAD TO check out Mongolian Throat Singing when I was in Mongolia. I had no idea what to expect. What I found was a strong form of music, an unbelievable use of the vocal chords to create sound vibrations. You could literally feel them in your chest!
Mongolia is a vast, empty space - the least densely populated place in the world. And yet this music is so full, deep and rich. It is haunting hearing it boom out into the nothingness.

After decades of suppression, Mongolian calligraphy has experienced a rebirth since the country's democratization in the 1990s. Traditionally, mentors select the best students and train them to be calligraphers over a period of five to eight years. At present, only three middle-aged scholars voluntarily train the small comm

"For more than two thousand years the Mongols have dominated the center of the Silk Road. Here, under the guidance of the great Khaans like Genghis and Kublai, the ancient traditions of shamanism and Indo-Tibetan Buddhism merged into a profound stream. The vast influence of Mongolia on Euro-Asian civilization is only now being fully appreciated.

"These celebrated artists include Gankhuyag Natsag, whose paintings, statues and traditional lama dance masks have shown in more than a dozen cities around the world; D.

In order to highlight the difficulties involved in nomadic life, an international seminar was held at the end of the Expedition in Ulan Bator (3-5 August 1992,) on the theme "The Nomads of Central Asia and the Silk Roads".
Mongolia is the only steppe nation where such a large number of people still lead a nomadic existence and practice a culture particularly suited to a mobile way of life. Although sheep provide a lot of their needs: skins for clothing, mutton, milk and cheese for food; dung for fuel; and wool for the manufacture of the characteristic felt gers, or yurts (the nomads’mobile homes), most Mongolian nomads also possess large herds of horses, camels, goats and in the high regions, yaks.
During the Expedition, participants were able to experience some of the difficulties of nomadic life, due, amongst other things, to the harsh and very rapidly changing climate.
They were also able to see some of the more pleasant aspects, such as the traditional arts, crafts and games, knowledge of which has been passed down from generation to generation , like Mongolian wrestling, archery, horse riding as well as a great deal of music, and particularly the famous Altay "khoomii" singing.
One of the important outcomes of this Expedition was the creation, in Ulan Bator in September 1998, of the International Institute for the Study of Nomadic Civilizations (website: http://www.nomadic.mn ).

On the windswept grasslands of Inner Mongolia horses have been prized and valued animals for centuries.
Able to cover great distances, these strong and sturdy animals are venerated and treated with great respect.
And despite modern forms of transportation reaching even the furthest plains of Mongolia, horses today remain firmly grounded in local customs and traditions.
STORYLINE:
More than 800 years after founding Mongolia, Genghis Khan remains a great source of pride and inspiration to many young ethnic Mongolians living in China's Autonomous Inner Mongolian province.
Genghis Khan founded and ruled the Mongol empire from 1162-1227.
His forces became famous for their skill as horsemen and for their audacity and fierceness in battle.
From folk songs to art, the Mongolian horse is ubiquitous in local folklore.
In the past Mongolian horses, known for their speed and endurance, carried Genghis Khan's armies across most of Asia and the Middle East.
Some say the unique characteristics of these horses played a role in the great Khan's conquests.
Wu lives in yurt with his young family and is a third-generation horse breeder.
"Because they are short and strong," he says.

Ganden Hyid is a pilgrimage destination for the faithful from all over Mongolia. They pray and wind prayer mills and crowd into the main sanctuary. In the monastery’s main temple is a twenty six metre high statue of the Buddha Of Mercy, patron saint of Mongolia that is decorated with gold and gems. Almost fifty kilometres east of Ulaanbaatar is a leisure area for the inhabitants of the city, the Terej National Park. Here horse riding is available across country and without limit, a fact that pleases the basic instincts of the Mongolian heart. In Kharkhorin, former residence of those who once ruled Mongolia, today there is little left to see. However, a few mysterious sites remain which, along with the Erdene Zuu Monastery, are highly evocative of this ancient city in Central Mongolia as for thirty two years it was the centre of one of the most powerful empires on Earth. The Magic of Mongolia can be felt by all who come here and this journey across a harsh and contrasting land has been an unforgettable adventure beyond compare.

When Saruul Fischer came to East Germany from Mongolia at the age of eleven, she could not have known how important her homeland would be to her in the future. She stayed there after the fall of the Berlin Wall, went to university, married and had children. Struck by a yearning for her homeland, she began developing an idea for the fashion label "Edelziege”.

MCA-Mongolia is the entity established by the Government of Mongolia to implement the $285 million grant program funded by Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).
In October 2007 an agreement was signed between the Mongolian and US governments for a five years, nearly USD 285 million 'Compact' for Mongolia to reduce poverty through economic growth, and targeting six sectors of society: property rights, per-urban rangeland, vocational education, health, Road, and energy efficiency. The Compact Program is a US Government grant.
The Program is expected to have a significant direct impact on individuals living in poverty, and significant indirect and ancillary benefits by creating new economic opportunities and increasing the capacity of individuals and groups to participate fully in and benefit from economic growth. On 8-th January, 2008.
The Parliament of Mongolia approved the Law on the ratification of the Compact Agreement and established a Board of Directors and the Government issued a resolution on MCA Mongolia establishment of MCA-Mongolia, an independent legal entity empowered to carry out the government's obligations and to implement the program under the Compact Agreement and Program Implementation Agreement, responsible for the implementing the project within the Compact and for overseeing its Millennium Challenge Account (MCA).

Wonderful traditional Mongolian performance by a young dancer at Tibet House (NYC) opening reception for this contemporary Mongolian art exhibit: "Mongol Visions: Winged Horses and Shamanic Skies."
More from the website about the event and show:
"For more than two thousand years the Mongols have dominated the center of the Silk Road. Here, under the guidance of the great Khaans like Genghis and Kublai, the ancient traditions of shamanism and Indo-Tibetan Buddhism merged into a profound stream. The vast influence of Mongolia on Euro-Asian civilization is only now being fully appreciated.
"Tibet House is delighted to join in the celebration of this inspiring and magical legacy by hosting an exhibition with some of Mongolia's greatest young artists whose works bring together the integrity of tradition and the creative impulse of the contemporary aesthetic.
"These celebrated artists include Gankhuyag Natsag, whose paintings, statues and traditional lama dance masks have shown in more than a dozen cities around the world; D. Soyolmaa, renowned for bringing the clarity and precision of traditional Buddhist art into a contemporary ambiance; T. Nurmaa, famed for her ability to capture on canvas the radiance and raw intensity of the Mongolian spirit; D. Bulgantuya, an acclaimed artist who has received rave reviews in Sofia, Budapest, Warsaw, Kiev, and Vienna; and Ts. Bolor, especially known for her "aesthetics of the feminine."

Travel video about destination Mongolia.
Mongolia is a land between sky, steppes and desert. Extreme, exotic, and mostly undiscovered, home to nomads, ringers, eagle hunters and horsemen. A land of adventure!Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia and is a metropolis set amid the steppes, truly the pulsating heart of the country that combines the cultures of old with a lively feeling of moving towards new horizons.

Mongolia is known among travelers as the land of nomads, birthplace of the Great king Genghis Khan and of many histories, dating all the way back to Paleolithic Age. It is home to hospitable, gracious herders who cherish their land, animals and culture in all its natural beauty.
In today’s fast changing world, Mongolia is considered as one of the few travel destinations and a place designed for travellers and adventure seekers that can offer beautiful unspoiled nature, endless steppes, massive ranging mountains, crystal clear lakes, parched conditions of the Gobi and interested in exploring the nomadic culture and unrivalled hospitality which have been kept for centuries.
