The Bronx is the northernmost of the five boroughs of New York City. It is also known as Bronx County, the last of the 62 counties of New York State to be incorporated. Located north of Manhattan and Queens, and south of Westchester County, the Bronx is the only borough that is located primarily on the mainland (a very small portion of Manhattan, the Marble Hill neighborhood, is physically located on the mainland, due to the rerouting of the Harlem River in 1897). The Bronx's population is 1,400,761 according to the 2010 United States Census. The borough has a land area of 42 square miles (109 km2), making it the fourth-largest in land area of the five boroughs, the fourth most populated, and the third-highest in density of population.
The Bronx is divided by the Bronx River into a hillier section in the west, closer to Manhattan, and the flatter East Bronx, closer to Long Island. The West Bronx was annexed to New York City (then largely confined to Manhattan) in 1874, and the areas east of the Bronx River in 1895. The Bronx first assumed a distinct legal identity when it became a borough of Greater New York in 1898. Bronx County, with the same boundaries as the borough, was separated from New York County (afterwards coextensive with the Borough of Manhattan) as of January 1, 1914. Although the Bronx is the third-most-densely-populated county in the U.S., about a quarter of its area is open space, including Woodlawn Cemetery, Van Cortlandt Park, Pelham Bay Park, the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo in the borough's north and center, on land deliberately reserved in the late 19th century as urban development progressed northwards and eastwards from Manhattan with the building of roads, bridges and railways.

A zoo (short for zoological park or zoological garden, and also called a menagerie) is a facility in which animals are confined within enclosures, displayed to the public, and in which they may also be bred.
The term zoological garden refers to zoology, the study of animals, a term deriving from the Greek zōon (ζῷον, "animal") and lógos (λóγος, "study"). The abbreviation "zoo" was first used of the London Zoological Gardens, which opened for scientific study in 1828 and to the public in 1847. The number of major animal collections open to the public around the world now exceeds 1,000, around 80 percent of them in cities.
However, keeping animals in zoos raises concerns for animals rights.
Zoos typically house more wild animals than domesticated ones.
London Zoo, which opened in 1828, first called itself a menagerie or "zoological garden," which is short for "Gardens and Menagerie of the Zoological Society of London." The abbreviation "zoo" first appeared in print in the UK around 1847, when it was used for the Clifton Zoo, but it was not until some twenty years later that the shortened form became popular in the song "Walking in the Zoo on Sunday" by music-hall artist Alfred Vance. The term "zoological park" was used for more expansive facilities in Washington, D.C., and the Bronx in New York, which opened in 1891 and 1899 respectively.

October 17, 2010 started with bright sunshine and punctually at 10 am I met my local New York City expert, Ed Botwin, in the lobby of my hotel. Ed is a volunteer with the Big Apple Greeter Organization, an organization that welcomes out-of-town visitors and puts them together with local volunteers who show them around all the neat spots in their city. The Big Apple Greeter program is one of the best ways of getting to know the city. Ed and I were going to explore the Bronx today, and to do so we went on a long subway ride straight north until we had to switch to a bus to finally arrive at the upscale Fieldston neighbourhood. From here we went on a long walk on leafy winding streets past Manhattan College to Van Cortlandt Park with its 18th century mansion, the Bronx's oldest building.
Our next stop was in the Belmont neighbourhood, home to New York City's largest Italian-American community. We popped into the historic Arthur Avenue Retail Market for an authentic Italian shopping experience and a delicious deli lunch. Then we strolled further south past Italian, Albanian and Mexican stores as well as the imposing Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Back on the bus we passed by poet Edgar Allen Poe's cottage and finally landed in the South Bronx, an area that was ravaged by urban decay in the 1960 and 1970s. Today, after about 20 years of revitalization, the area seems rather safe and respectable. "The Hub", a popular retail area where four major roads converge, was teeming with people going about their business. Thanks to my expert local greeter Ed Botwin, I came away with a much better understanding of this fascinating part of New York City.
By 4 pm I was back at my hotel and connected with my friend Linda. Together we continued our explorations and headed to the southwestern part of Manhattan to see one of the city's most recent attractions: the High Line, a former elevated railroad that has been rescued from demolition and converted into an urban park. Built to replace a former street-level railway, the High Line opened in 1934 and carried freight until 1980. When there was talk of a demolition of the railway, a group of local activists got together and managed to save the railroad. Finally in June of 2009, the southernmost part of the railway opened as a public park. Judging by the large crowds that were enjoying a walk on this elevated historic railway / urban park, the project is a huge success and the public loves the High Line.
As the sun started to set we walked south on Greenwich Street to the tip of Manhattan from where we took the Staten Island Ferry to get an excellent view of Manhattan's skyline. Back on land we walked up the east side of Manhattan and checked out the South Street Seaport, a historic port area that has been converted into a major restaurant and entertainment district. After a quick subway ride, we ended up near Times Square again where we enjoyed a nice dinner at a restaurant called Brazil and fell into our beds exhausted after many hours of walking and sightseeing.

From here we went on a long walk on leafy winding streets past Manhattan College to Van Cortlandt Park with its 18th century mansion, the Bronx's oldest building.
Our next stop was in the Belmont neighbourhood, home to New York City's largest Italian-American community. We popped into the historic Arthur Avenue Retail Market for an authentic Italian shopping experience and a delicious deli lunch. Then we strolled further south past Italian, Albanian and Mexican stores as well as the imposing Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Back on the bus we passed by poet Edgar Allen Poe's cottage and finally landed in the South Bronx, an area that was ravaged by urban decay in the 1960 and 1970s. Today, after about 20 years of revitalization, the area seems rather safe and respectable. "The Hub", a popular retail area where four major roads converge, was teeming with people going about their business. Thanks to my expert local greeter Ed Botwin, I came away with a much better understanding of this fascinating part of New York City.
By 4 pm I was back at my hotel and connected with my friend Linda. Together we continued our explorations and headed to the southwestern part of Manhattan to see one of the city's most recent attractions: the High Line, a former elevated railroad that has been rescued from demolition and converted into an urban park. Built to replace a former street-level railway, the High Line opened in 1934 and carried freight until 1980. When there was talk of a demolition of the railway, a group of local activists got together and managed to save the railroad. Finally in June of 2009, the southernmost part of the railway opened as a public park. Judging by the large crowds that were enjoying a walk on this elevated historic railway / urban park, the project is a huge success and the public loves the High Line.
As the sun started to set we walked south on Greenwich Street to the tip of Manhattan from where we took the Staten Island Ferry to get an excellent view of Manhattan's skyline. Back on land we walked up the east side of Manhattan and checked out the South Street Seaport, a historic port area that has been converted into a major restaurant and entertainment district. After a quick subway ride, we ended up near Times Square again where we enjoyed a nice dinner at a restaurant called Brazil and fell into our beds exhausted after many hours of walking and sightseeing.

We happen to go on a Friday which was a day we had to pay. For me it was worth it because 1. I’m 8 ½ months pregnant, 2. This was one of the not so hot days 3. It just worked with our schedule. July 12th, 2015 - Bronx Zoo, NY Felt like the first time for most of us as we haven't been to the Bronx Zoo since grade school school trips. Was pretty hot today in the upper 80's feeling like the 90's at time. There were some attractions closed probably due to heat and the Asian Monorail was closed due to a electrical issue. I apologize for the audio sync issue near the end. Was too tired to correct it as I was pouring through so much footage for editing. Chris is an ecologist and epidemiologist studying the effects of global environmental trends on human health. He is the Director of the WCS HEAL program, as well as a Research Associate at the Harvard School of Public Health’s Department of Environmental Health and Department of Nutrition. Inspired by the lemurs of Madagascar, Chris has been conducting research there since 1999. His work focuses on local people’s dependence on natural resources for attaining adequate health-- research he was recognized for in 2014 as a National Geographic Emerging Explorer.

Hang out with me while I celebrate my birthday week tradition! I always take the week off for my b'day and try to fill it with lots of fun stuff. This year, I spent lots of time with my family, visited the Bronx Zoo and saw the cutest baby goat ever, saw some shows on Broadway, built a cabinet, went toy hunting and had an awesome Funko Pop score, watched a Star Wars marathon, got ready for my neice's 2nd birthday and some other fun stuff. Also some not so fun stuff, like going to the vet and dentist! LOL! I've got lots of photos from the zoo and I share my thoughts on Finding Neverland and Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder.

Felt like the first time for most of us as we haven't been to the Bronx Zoo since grade school school trips. Was pretty hot today in the upper 80's feeling like the 90's at time. There were some attractions closed probably due to heat and the Asian Monorail was closed due to a electrical issue. I apologize for the audio sync issue near the end. Was too tired to correct it as I was pouring through so much footage for editing.

Best known for their iconic beaks, Tufted Puffins can be found up and down the northern Pacific Coast from Alaska to California... and in the Bronx Zoo. These colorful birds have special adaptations that allow them to hold their breath for up to a minute while diving, to fly up to 55 mph, and to carry multiple fish at a time-- one record-breaking puffin was seen carrying 62 fish in its beak!

Tim started working at the Bronx Zoo as a teen intern in 1997. During the summer, he worked in the Children's Zoo and Education Department, while earning his Animal Science/Education degrees. He has been in the Bird Department for the past 13 years, and also received his Masters in Biology. Tim is currently a senior keeper at the World of Birds in charge of diets for the department.
