Horatio Nelson was born September 28, 1758, in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk England - the sixth of eleven children. His father was Reverend Edmund Nelson. His mother Catherine Nelson died when he was 9 years old. She was the grandniece of Sir Robert Walpole, the first British Prime Minister.
Catherine Nelson's brother was Captain Maurice Suckling. January 1, 1771 aged 13 Horatio Nelson joined his uncle's ship HMS Raisonnable. The frail boy was seasick, a life-long condition.
When Suckling was transferred to HMS Triumph, Nelson moved to serve aboard the West Indiamen. He returned to his Uncle's ship & his first command, a longboat used to ferry supplies.
Eventually Nelson was promoted to lieutenant & attached to HMS Lowestoffe, patrolling the West Indies, during the American War of Independence. He was given command of "Little Lucy" a captured American tender.
1784, he was given command of a frigate, HMS Boreas. On Nevis Island, Nelson met Frances Nisbet, a young widow from a plantation family. They married March 11, 1787. With hostilities ended the couple returned to England & they settled in his birthplace, Burnham Thorpe.
In 1792, Nelson was recalled to service. Tensions between France & Britain were leading to war. January 1793, he was given command of HMS Agamemnon, a 64-gun ship, patrolling the Mediterranean. In Naples he met Britain's ambassador Sir William Hamilton & his beautiful & witty wife, Lady Emma Hamilton.
July 12, 1794, Nelson was on Corsica. A shot hit a sandbag, the debris strucking his right eye. The eye was badly damaged & he eventually lost sight in it.
In 1797, Nelson was involved in the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. As he stepped ashore, a musket ball shattered his right arm. He was rowed back to the ship refusing help boarding saying:
"Let me alone! I have got my legs left & one arm."
Nelson instructed the ship's surgeon to prepare his instruments ready for amputation, saying:
"the sooner it was off the better"
After more action Nelson was a public hero, but not so popular with his superior officers, as he was known for insubordination.
In 1799, Nelson returned to Naples. Reunited with Emma Hamilton they began a lifelong affair. In 1800, Sir William Hamilton was recalled to Britain. Nelson also returned, receiving a heroes welcome. Their relationship however was becoming common knowledge. Eventually his wife Fanny Nelson, issued an ultimatum, to choose between her or Emma Hamilton. Nelson replied:
"I love you sincerely but I cannot forget my obligations to Lady Hamilton or speak of her otherwise than with affection & admiration"
January 29 1801, Nelson & Emma Hamilton's illegitimate daughter Horatia was born. Two years later Emma's husband died & she was christened, with Emma & Horatio as godparents. They adopted her claiming she was an orphan.
October 12 1805 HMS Victory, was in the Cape of Trafalgar, off the south-west coast of Spain. Nelson's fleet of 27 ships faced 33 French & Spanish ships. Before battle Nelson sent a flag signal:
"England Expects That Every Man Will Do His Duty"
Nelson was on the deck of HMS Victory wearing his military honours & was easily spotted by a sniper. The bullet hit his left shoulder, piercing a lung & striking his spine. Nelson told Hardy, HMS Victory's captain:
"Hardy, I do believe they have done it at last ... my backbone is shot through"
Nelson was taken below decks. The dying Nelson asked those there to "Take care of poor Lady Hamilton" & thanked God that "I have done my duty". His last words were "God & my country".
To preserve it Nelson's body was placed in a cask of brandy, tied to HMS Victory's mast. It was then moved to a lead-lined coffin filled with wine. After repairs, HMS Victory brought the body home.
January 9, 1806, Nelson's state funeral took place. The coffin was escorted by 32 admirals, over a 100 captains, & 10,000 troops. Nelson's body was laid to rest in the crypt of St. Paul's Cathedral in a sarcophagus made for Thomas Cardinal Wolsey.
His dying wishes for Emma Hamilton & Horatia were not honoured. Financial difficulties lead to them spending a year in a debtors prison. To escape creditors Emma fled to France. January 15 1815, Emma Hamilton, Nelson's great love died in poverty.
May 13, 1831, Nelson's wife died aged 70. It is said she was still devoted to his memory.
1840, work began on Nelson's column in London's Trafalgar Square. The statue faces the Admiralty & Portsmouth where HMS Victory is docked.
March 6, 1881, Nelson's beloved daughter Horatia died aged 80. She had married Reverend Philip Ward & produced ten children. HMS Victory is preserved in Portsmouth, a plaque marks where he fell.
Thus ends our tale of the life & times of Horatio Nelson.

His life on dry land, however, was to prove less 'victorious' and far more controversial as his personal dealings became something of a scandal. A married man, yet openly flaunting his affair with Lady Emma Hamilton, wife of Lord Hamilton, Nelson caused outrage in both London society and within the higher echelons of the navy. The Great Commanders: Horatio Nelson - 9pm, Monday 30 March on Sky 534 and Virgin 243 Narrated by Brian Cox, Phil Grabsky’s documentary series of profiles continues with Horatio Nelson, whose maritime feats ensured British domination of the seas for a century. After Britain entered the French Revolutionary Wars in 1793, Nelson’s tactical skills and inspirational leadership delivered a succession of victories, although he also developed a reputation for recklessness and the occasional disregard of orders. A notable example of the latter occurred at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801, when he raised a telescope to his blind eye and claimed not to be able to see the signal to withdraw. The incident is said to be the origin of the metaphor ’turn a blind eye’. Nelson’s greatest triumph occurred on October 21, 1805, when his fleet decisively defeated a combined Franco-Spanish force at the Battle of Trafalgar, off the south west coast of Spain. The victory was achieved due to Nelson’s departure from established naval orthodoxy. Rather than aligning his ships in a sideways-on position to exchange broadsides with the enemy, Nelson divided his force into two columns and sailed straight into the middle of the opposing fleet. The admiral’s greatest victory, however, would be his last. As the smoke of battle cleared, Nelson lay mortally wounded, slain by a sniper’s bullet. -

Beneath is abridged text from our site: Horatio Nelson was born September 28, 1758, in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk England - the sixth of eleven children. His father was Reverend Edmund Nelson. His mother Catherine Nelson died when he was 9 years old. She was the grandniece of Sir Robert Walpole, the first British Prime Minister. Catherine Nelson's brother was Captain Maurice Suckling. January 1, 1771 aged 13 Horatio Nelson joined his uncle's ship HMS Raisonnable. The frail boy was seasick, a life-long condition. When Suckling was transferred to HMS Triumph, Nelson moved to serve aboard the West Indiamen. He returned to his Uncle's ship & his first command, a longboat used to ferry supplies.... -

Horatio Nelson to Lady Emma Hamilton (Letter written in Madarasz Script)
These are the first words of Horatio Nelson's last letter to his lover Lady Emma Hamilton, written in the night before the battle of Trafalgar (in which he was fatally wounded). Since a while I have been studying Madarasz' famous script which he calls 'Roundhand', but which looks very different than usual Copperplate calligraphy and is famous among calligrapher's for its 'dashing' quality ;). In 'The Madarasz Book' he explains in detail how to write it and I have been following his instructions … working on a lot of issues like spacing, consistency of stroke width and so on. A fun script! Very manly and fitting for the famous general, I thought! This is the more casual style where Madarsz advises not to retouch the squares and bottoms of the letters. I used walnut ink from kalligraphie... -

Horatio Nelson was born September 28, 1758, in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk England - the sixth of eleven children. His father was Reverend Edmund Nelson. His mother Catherine Nelson died when he was 9 years old. She was the grandniece of Sir Robert Walpole, the first British Prime Minister.
Catherine Nelson's brother was Captain Maurice Suckling. January 1, 1771 aged 13 Horatio Nelson joined his uncle's ship HMS Raisonnable. The frail boy was seasick, a life-long condition.
When Suckling was transferred to HMS Triumph, Nelson moved to serve aboard the West Indiamen. He returned to his Uncle's ship & his first command, a longboat used to ferry supplies.
Eventually Nelson was promoted to lieutenant & attached to HMS Lowestoffe, patrolling the West Indies, during the American War of Independence. He was given command of "Little Lucy" a captured American tender.
1784, he was given command of a frigate, HMS Boreas. On Nevis Island, Nelson met Frances Nisbet, a young widow from a plantation family. They married March 11, 1787. With hostilities ended the couple returned to England & they settled in his birthplace, Burnham Thorpe.
In 1792, Nelson was recalled to service. Tensions between France & Britain were leading to war. January 1793, he was given command of HMS Agamemnon, a 64-gun ship, patrolling the Mediterranean. In Naples he met Britain's ambassador Sir William Hamilton & his beautiful & witty wife, Lady Emma Hamilton.
July 12, 1794, Nelson was on Corsica. A shot hit a sandbag, the debris strucking his right eye. The eye was badly damaged & he eventually lost sight in it.
In 1797, Nelson was involved in the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. As he stepped ashore, a musket ball shattered his right arm. He was rowed back to the ship refusing help boarding saying:
"Let me alone! I have got my legs left & one arm."
Nelson instructed the ship's surgeon to prepare his instruments ready for amputation, saying:
"the sooner it was off the better"
After more action Nelson was a public hero, but not so popular with his superior officers, as he was known for insubordination.
In 1799, Nelson returned to Naples. Reunited with Emma Hamilton they began a lifelong affair. In 1800, Sir William Hamilton was recalled to Britain. Nelson also returned, receiving a heroes welcome. Their relationship however was becoming common knowledge. Eventually his wife Fanny Nelson, issued an ultimatum, to choose between her or Emma Hamilton. Nelson replied:
"I love you sincerely but I cannot forget my obligations to Lady Hamilton or speak of her otherwise than with affection & admiration"
January 29 1801, Nelson & Emma Hamilton's illegitimate daughter Horatia was born. Two years later Emma's husband died & she was christened, with Emma & Horatio as godparents. They adopted her claiming she was an orphan.
October 12 1805 HMS Victory, was in the Cape of Trafalgar, off the south-west coast of Spain. Nelson's fleet of 27 ships faced 33 French & Spanish ships. Before battle Nelson sent a flag signal:
"England Expects That Every Man Will Do His Duty"
Nelson was on the deck of HMS Victory wearing his military honours & was easily spotted by a sniper. The bullet hit his left shoulder, piercing a lung & striking his spine. Nelson told Hardy, HMS Victory's captain:
"Hardy, I do believe they have done it at last ... my backbone is shot through"
Nelson was taken below decks. The dying Nelson asked those there to "Take care of poor Lady Hamilton" & thanked God that "I have done my duty". His last words were "God & my country".
To preserve it Nelson's body was placed in a cask of brandy, tied to HMS Victory's mast. It was then moved to a lead-lined coffin filled with wine. After repairs, HMS Victory brought the body home.
January 9, 1806, Nelson's state funeral took place. The coffin was escorted by 32 admirals, over a 100 captains, & 10,000 troops. Nelson's body was laid to rest in the crypt of St. Paul's Cathedral in a sarcophagus made for Thomas Cardinal Wolsey.
His dying wishes for Emma Hamilton & Horatia were not honoured. Financial difficulties lead to them spending a year in a debtors prison. To escape creditors Emma fled to France. January 15 1815, Emma Hamilton, Nelson's great love died in poverty.
May 13, 1831, Nelson's wife died aged 70. It is said she was still devoted to his memory.
1840, work began on Nelson's column in London's Trafalgar Square. The statue faces the Admiralty & Portsmouth where HMS Victory is docked.
March 6, 1881, Nelson's beloved daughter Horatia died aged 80. She had married Reverend Philip Ward & produced ten children. HMS Victory is preserved in Portsmouth, a plaque marks where he fell.

Narrated by Brian Cox, Phil Grabsky’s documentary series of profiles continues with Horatio Nelson, whose maritime feats ensured British domination of the seas for a century.
After Britain entered the French Revolutionary Wars in 1793, Nelson’s tactical skills and inspirational leadership delivered a succession of victories, although he also developed a reputation for recklessness and the occasional disregard of orders. A notable example of the latter occurred at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801, when he raised a telescope to his blind eye and claimed not to be able to see the signal to withdraw. The incident is said to be the origin of the metaphor ’turn a blind eye’. Nelson’s greatest triumph occurred on October 21, 1805, when his fleet decisively defeated a combined Franco-Spanish force at the Battle of Trafalgar, off the south west coast of Spain. The victory was achieved due to Nelson’s departure from established naval orthodoxy. Rather than aligning his ships in a sideways-on position to exchange broadsides with the enemy, Nelson divided his force into two columns and sailed straight into the middle of the opposing fleet. The admiral’s greatest victory, however, would be his last. As the smoke of battle cleared, Nelson lay mortally wounded, slain by a sniper’s bullet.

The Great Commanders: Horatio Nelson - 9pm, Monday 30 March on Sky 534 and Virgin 243
Narrated by Brian Cox, Phil Grabsky’s documentary series of profiles continues with Horatio Nelson, whose maritime feats ensured British domination of the seas for a century.
After Britain entered the French Revolutionary Wars in 1793, Nelson’s tactical skills and inspirational leadership delivered a succession of victories, although he also developed a reputation for recklessness and the occasional disregard of orders. A notable example of the latter occurred at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801, when he raised a telescope to his blind eye and claimed not to be able to see the signal to withdraw. The incident is said to be the origin of the metaphor ’turn a blind eye’. Nelson’s greatest triumph occurred on October 21, 1805, when his fleet decisively defeated a combined Franco-Spanish force at the Battle of Trafalgar, off the south west coast of Spain. The victory was achieved due to Nelson’s departure from established naval orthodoxy. Rather than aligning his ships in a sideways-on position to exchange broadsides with the enemy, Nelson divided his force into two columns and sailed straight into the middle of the opposing fleet. The admiral’s greatest victory, however, would be his last. As the smoke of battle cleared, Nelson lay mortally wounded, slain by a sniper’s bullet.

These are the first words of Horatio Nelson's last letter to his lover Lady Emma Hamilton, written in the night before the battle of Trafalgar (in which he was fatally wounded).
Since a while I have been studying Madarasz' famous script which he calls 'Roundhand', but which looks very different than usual Copperplate calligraphy and is famous among calligrapher's for its 'dashing' quality ;). In 'The Madarasz Book' he explains in detail how to write it and I have been following his instructions … working on a lot of issues like spacing, consistency of stroke width and so on. A fun script! Very manly and fitting for the famous general, I thought!
This is the more casual style where Madarsz advises not to retouch the squares and bottoms of the letters.
I used walnut ink from kalligraphie.ch, a Unique Obliques oblique holder and a B&F; Velleda EF nib on Pure Cotton Crown Mill paper.

These French naval cannons, dated 1786, were captured by the British Royal Navy, probably at the Battle of the Nile in 1798. We explain how we can decode the various cryptic markings on the cannons to establish their provenance. Corrections: Name of Royal Cannon Foundry is Ruelle, not "Ruelles." Narrator's pronunciation of French place names may not be correct. -

Corrections: Name of Royal Cannon Foundry is Ruelle, not "Ruelles." Narrator's pronunciation of French place names may not be correct.

The San Juan Expedition took place between March and November 1780 during the American War of Independence when a British force under the command of John Polson and Captain Horatio Nelson landed on the coast of the present-day Nicaragua, with the aim of sailing up the San Juan River to capture the strategically crucial towns of Granada and León, located on the northwestern shore of Lake Nicaragua. Despite an initial success in the capture of the Fortress of the Immaculate Conception, Polson's force never reached Lake Nicaragua and, decimated by yellow fever, was forced to return to Jamaica. The campaign ended in total failure and cost the lives of more than 2,500 men, making it the costliest British disaster of the entire war.

The Temeraire attempts to lead the line. Nelson refuses and moves the Victory into the head of the fleet. The battle begins, cannon are fired and damage is done. The battle on board ship. (Note: Several Black African actors appear as members of the crew).
Nelson is wounded, "They have done for me at last, Hardy", Nelson on deathbed, cannons are fired, ships catch fire. Nelson is told of his victory, he is near death "Kiss me Hardy" reads intertitle, battle continues, Nelson dies saying "Thank God - I have done my Duty."
End intertitle reads: "Though more than a century has passed since Nelson died, the spirit he bequeathed lives on." (This title has bad decomposition damage as does last shot of a ship under sail). THE END. British Instructional Films Ltd end title.

The Missa in Angustiis ("Mass for troubled times") or "Nelson Mass" (Hob. XXII:11), is one of fourteen masses written by Joseph Haydn. It is one of the six masses written near the end of his life which are now seen as a culmination of Haydn's liturgical composition.
The summer of 1798 was therefore a terrifying time for Austria, and when Haydn finished this Mass, his own title, in the catalogue of his works, was "Missa in Angustiis" or "Mass for Troubled Times". What Haydn did not know when he wrote the Mass, but what he and his audience heard (perhaps on the very day of the first performance September 15), was that on Aug. 1, Napoleon had been dealt a stunning defeat in the Battle of the Nile by British forces led by Admiral Horatio Nelson. Because of this coincidence, the Mass gradually acquired the nickname "Lord Nelson Mass". The title became indelible when in 1800, Lord Nelson himself visited the Palais Esterházy, accompanied by his British mistress, Lady Hamilton, and may have heard the Mass performed.
Haydn's chief biographer, H. C. Robbins Landon, has written that this mass "is arguably Haydn's greatest single composition".

21 października 1805r rozegrała się największa bitwa morska wojen napoleońskich pomiędzy flotą angielską a francusko-hiszpańską.
Eskadra angielska pod dowództwem admirała Horatio Nelsona liczyła 27 okrętów liniowych i 2 fregaty. Adm. P. Ch. Villeneuve miał 33 okręty liniowe i 7 fregat. 21 października nad ranem flota francusko-hiszpańska, w drodze do Neapolu, dostrzegła Anglików. Admirał Vielleneuve zarządził odwrót, który jednak został spowolniony przez słaby wiatr, utrudniający manewrowanie.
Francuzi podkreślają, że ich marynarka w czasach Trafalgaru niczym nie różniła się od tej z epoki króla Ludwika XVI, przy tej samej liczbie okrętów, ale z gorszą kadrą oficerską, gdyż duża jej część, w tym sławny admirał d’Estaing, została zgilotynowana podczas rewolucji. Flotą sojuszniczą dowodził mało zdecydowany admirał de Villeneuve, który zresztą – w odróżnieniu od Nelsona – przeżył bitwę.
O godz. 12 Nelson zaatakował wroga dwiema kolumnami, które miały po swojej stronie niekorzystny wiatr i płynęły w poprzek szyku francusko–hiszpańskiego. Gdy po godzinie udało im się przerwać linie francuskie, wywiązały się serie pojedynczych starć, w których górowali Anglicy. Flagowy okręt Nelsona, Victory, znalazł się pod ostrzałem francuskich Buceantre i Redoutable. Strzelcy z tego ostatniego razili Anglików ogniem z borni pokładowej. Łatwy cel stanowił dla nich wyróżniający się ubiorem Admirał Nelson. Ok. 13:00 został on śmiertelnie postrzelony i kazał się znieść pod podkład, by żołnierze go nie zobaczyli. Gdy umierał o 16.30, bitwa była już prawie zakończona – Royal Navy górowała nad Francuzami, którzy stracili 5 tys. ludzi oraz 7 tys. wziętych do niewoli. Straty Anglików szacuje się na około 1000 ludzi.
Bitwa pod Trafalgarem była zaledwie epizodem w konflikcie morskim pomiędzy Wielką Brytanią a Francją, który rozpoczął się w roku 1793, a zakończył w 1815. Miała jednak charakter rozstrzygający. Ukazała nie tylko brytyjską potęgę morską, ale również znaczenie tego kraju jako głównego uczestnika wojny prowadzonej na nieznaną dotąd skalę, którą zdystansować miała dopiero I wojna światowa. Rozegrana w ramach tego konfliktu bitwa morska jest jedną z największych w historii i ostatnią stoczoną przez floty składające się z okrętów zbudowanych z drewna. The San Juan Expedition took place between March and November 1780 during the American War of Independence when a British force under the command of John Polson and Captain Horatio Nelson landed on the coast of the present-day Nicaragua, with the aim of sailing up the San Juan River to capture the strategically crucial towns of Granada and León, located on the northwestern shore of Lake Nicaragua.
Despite an initial success in the capture of the Fortress of the Immaculate Conception, Polson's force never reached Lake Nicaragua and, decimated by yellow fever, was forced to return to Jamaica. The campaign ended in total failure and cost the lives of more than 2,500 men, making it the costliest British disaster of the entire war.

Hunters from Outwest Farms located in Okeechobee, Florida have posted an image showing a massive, near 15-foot, 780 pound alligator they found and killed. According to CNN, the huge reptile was discovered on Saturday on one of the ponds located on a private ranch owned by Outwest Farms owner Lee Lightsey ... They were surprised when they came across this huge alligator instead ... I hate seeing a beautiful dinosaur like that killed.???? #RIP....
