Countries using the Euro currency have been most severely impacted by the economic crash that first struck the European Union in 2008. Government health service budgets have been slashed in countries such as Greece, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Ireland. Waiting lists for medical procedures are growing all the time and many people, who simply cannot afford it, have no alternative but to use the little money they have on private healthcare.
At this conference in Brussels, experts agreed that there are no easy solutions when it comes to the EU's healthcare crisis. One option is to raise more revenue by increasing tax on income, unhealthy foods and tobacco but analysts say that the most effective way to tackle the problem is for governments to spend healthcare budgets more efficiently.
The so-called 'healthcare inequality' is growing across the European Union. The rich can afford to pay for private treatment, while those less well off fall through the cracks.
Healthcare experts say that most EU countries have failed to plan for the future. As life-expectancy increases and birth-rates decline in many countries, the tax-paying workforce is getting smaller. This raises serious questions about how healthcare in the EU is going to be paid for in the decades ahead.

By 2050, 37 percent of the European population will be over 60 years old, presenting major new healthcare demands – and serious economic challenges as well.
The European Steering Group on Sustainable Healthcare, chaired by former Irish health minister Mary Harney, brings together politicians, health care practitioners and academics to address the issue.
“The status quo in healthcare is no longer an option. If we want to continue with health service in Europe that’s of high quality – universally acceptable to everybody on the same basis without care to be rationed – then we have to transform in a radical way the way (that) we provide services, how we intervene with patients at an earlier stage and how we empower citizens to take more control and manage their own health.”
The steering group has also already developed around 30 pilot projects in 21 countries.
After more than a year gathering data, the steering group presented a White Paper outlining its recommendations at a conference, entitled ‘Acting Together – a Roadmap for Sustainable Healthcare’, held on 19 March in Brussels.
Professor Walter Ricciardi, who worked on the White Paper, explained that Europe has a particularly old population, “especially in Italy and Germany.”
“For people with chronic diseases – that last many years and cannot be cured – we must reorganise services – not only hospital services, but also assistance on the territory and at home,” Ricciardi said.
Chronic disease is responsible for 86 percent of all deaths and affects more than 80 percent of people over 65. It costs an estimated 700 billion euro in healthcare spending each year.
Pascale Richetta, Vice President (Western Europe and Canada) at AbbVie, told euronews: “If I take the example of oncology, obviously oncology has moved from a very acute condition with very serious prognosis to – now for several of them – a chronic condition, but we can achieve this stage by early intervention.
“So really early intervention, early treatment, can minimise the seriousness of chronic condition and help people live longer,” Richetta continued.
Early intervention is at the core of a Madrid-based research project on muscoloskeletal diseases – the main cause of disabilities across all ages.
The initiative has seen impressive results, explained Professor Juan Jover, Head of Rheumatology at Clinico hospital.
“We were able to cut by 40 percent the numbers of days off work of people with recent onset work disability, and the economical results were very good, because for each euro that you invest in the program, you get a return of 11 euros in a couple of years,” Jover said.
Promoting responsible lifestyles can have a big economic impact. Especially in countries like UK, where 67 percent of men and 57 percent of women are considered overweight or obese, according to British government data.
Professor Vincenzo Atella, Professor of Economics at the University of Rome, explained: “Healthier lifestyles can enable people to be less overweight when they reach the age of 50, allowing Europe to save up to 100 billion euros between now and 2050. And this is only through lifestyle changes – not taking into account medicine or other measures.”
Reorganising healthcare systems may be a necessity, but the EU Commissioner for Health, Vytenis Andriukaitis, warned of the danger of cost-cutting in the wrong areas.
“If we speak about structural reforms, we must speak about impact assessment on public health. You can’t destroy access to healthcare in your so-called structural reforms. What does it mean healthcare? It’s (a) precondition for growth and jobs,” Vytenis said.

As legend has it, Rome, Italy, was founded by the twin brothers, Romulus and Remus, in 700 B.C. The former Caput Mundi, or Capital of the World, sits beneath Palatine Hill, where the ruins of its original incarnation are open for exploration.
No Rome tour is complete without stopping by the remains of the Temple of Saturn and Arch of Septimus, both located in the Roman Forum. Get in touch with your inner gladiator and stop by the Colosseum, a relic of Roman bloodsports and perhaps the most recognizable element of the city.
Toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure you’ll return to Rome one day; don’t toss in two coins unless you’re ready to fall in love with a Roman. Continue your Rome sightseeing in St. Peter’s Square, home of St. Peter’s Basilica. The world’s largest church, designed by Michelangelo, is both a remarkable structure and a tribute to faith. You can look down from the famous dome to the Holy Square, which is usually filled with the faithful looking to obtain a blessing from the Pope. After this, it’s just a few steps to restaurants filled with Italian food. Forget coming back to Rome – you’ll never want to leave.

Travel video about destination Roma in Italy.
Roma Aeterna, eternal city and ancient centre of the world.
The Piazza Navona is situated in one of the Italian capital's most beautiful squares in a city that has always been a dream destination for travelers from all over the world. Three large fountains adorn the large oval square that was built above the ruins of a Domitian stadium that dates back to the 3rd century A.D.
The Romans had a special regard for fountains, the most famous of which is the Fontana Di Trevi. It was designed by Nicolo Salvi for the façade of the Palazzo Poli.
The Via Appia Antica was the most important street in ancient Rome. It connected the southern area with the main city and even today, one can walk over its ancient cobblestones.
Pope Gregory XIII had the Palazzo Del Quirinale built as his summer residence but it was not long after that the Italian monarchs acquired it as their Renaissance palace. Today it is the residence of Italy's President and the daily changing of the guards ceremony is still a popular attraction.
The 17th century St. Peter's Square is the most beautiful square in the world and is situated in the centre of the Vatican, an autonomous Church State in the heart of Rome that also contains the imposing and breathtaking Petersdom, the largest Christian church in the world.
The allure of this city lies in its combination of chaos and joie de vivre, elegance and creativity. Rome is a complete work of art!

Come join me on my trip to the beautiful city of Venice in Italy, which is considered t be one of the greatest tourist attractions in the world.
Veneice is a city in the north eastern part of the italian country right at the Adriatic within the province of Venetia and is often called La Serenissima.
The city counts 270.884 inhabitants, with only 62.000 people living in the historic centre, called centro storico and 30.000 more on other island in the lagoon. There are more than 100 islands in the lagoon of Venice.
The republic of Venice has been an important political and economic power in europa for about 1000 years, but lost its independence in 1897, when Napoleon set foot on the well known St. Mark's Square and forced the supreme authority to surrender.
Today the leading branch it tourism. In 2006 over 14.000.000 people visited the city to witness magnificent sights like the St. Mark's Basilica, the Campanile or the beautiful Rialto Bridge.

when I first saw the "Under the tucsan Sun trailer" I knew that I need to discover Toscana or Tuscany as the Italian folk says (Travel Channel Tuscany)... today after visiting Rome, Bologna, Genova, Sardinia, Florence, Verona, Venezia, Firenze, Pisa, Siena, Livorno, Padova, Viareggio, Lucca, Volterra, Chianti Barberino val de Elsa and San Gimignano ...so I decided to create this travel guide video for you! And I'm pretty excited to guide you through one of the most beautiful countries of Europe. In this video I introduce you Tuscany in Italy-The Charmed Land and the Dolce Vita Under the Tuscan Sun.
To sum up here are 10 things you should do in Tuscany:
1: sleep in a typical Tuscan Villa or Middle age like castle in Tuscany like "Villa Pitiana"
2: visit traditional italian cities like "Barberino val de Elsa" and enjoy the dolce vita
3: enjoy the view: like me in San Gimignano, Italy's Towering Hill Town
4: breath in the culture, make a guided tour in Florence (Firenze) and explore the Galleria dell Academia, make a walk on Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio, check out the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with the Baptistery, or discover the view from thr Campanile - Bell Tower. There are so many tourist attractions in Florence...you won't believe your eyes when crossing the Ponte Vecchio bridge. Oh and make sure to visit Boboli Garden and Pitti Palace formal seat of the Medici family. I fall in love with it as you can see in my video
5-6: Taste Tuscany: discover the Tuscan kitchen and delicious italian gastronomy. Tuscany Food and Wine Tours are famous...you should try tuscan receipts and attend a vine testing on the Tuscan hills..
7: Italy is the home of fast sport cars, like Maranello :Ferrari. My boyfriend chose to make a Lamborghini gallardo e-gear test.
8: Visit Pisa and take a photo holding the Pisa tower (Torre di Pisa)
9: Beach is waiting! If you are in Italy make sure to take some days to relax on the beach. We spent some time in Viareggio
10: realize that you need to come back to learn more about the 100 faces of Italy
To see more videos from Tuscany just type in one of the following keywords: [Florence in nutshell]

The gritty maze of the medieval city that makes up the core of Genoa is both beauty and the beast. The grandeur and heritage of this once great trading city lives side by side with modern vice and decrepitude. The odious smelling alleys give way to modern and chic restaurants and shops. Genoa is one of the most difficult of cities to describe and is very different from more generally travelled Italian cities like Rome, Florence or Venice.

Take a tour of Top 10 Travel Attractions of Rome, Italy - part of the World's Greatest Attractions series by GeoBeats.
Hey, this is your travel host, Naomi. I would like to show you the top 10 attractions of Rome.
Number 10: Trastevere, a perfect opportunity to get away from tourists. If you want to experience the local Roman day to day life, you will find it in the distinct Trastevere neighborhood.
Number 9: Mausoleum of Hadrian. Constructed by the Roman emperor Hadrian for himself, the building has served many functions.
Number 8: Roman Forum, among the most significant ruins in Rome today. During the time of the Roman Empire this was a bustling city center with markets, banks and government buildings.
Number 7: Spanish Steps, probably the most important steps in the world. They draw visitors from all over.
Number 6: Piazza Navona, this is a large and popular square. About 1900 years ago this was the site of a stadium which was later converted into a piazza.
Number 5: Piazza del Popolo, another historic and lively piazza of Rome. It is surrounded by beautiful structures. In Italian, Piazza del Popolo literally means people's square.
Number 4: Trevi Fountain, a grand fountain in the heart of Rome. You will not find a more gorgeous fountain anywhere else.
Number 3: Pantheon. Constructed nearly 2,000 years ago, Pantheon is one of the most well-known historical buildings of Rome. You will find it to be remarkably preserved.
Number 2: Vatican. It has been the home of the Pope for hundreds of years. Even though it is situated within Rome, Vatican is an independent country, in fact, the smallest in the world.
Number 1: Colosseum. No visit to Rome is complete without a visit to the Colosseum, the site for the gladiator fights. It is perhaps the most important symbol of the mighty Roman Empire.
Keep watching our travel series. Ciao.

Ciao.

Travel video about destination Napoli.
Napoli is the capital of Campania in southern Italy where hustle and bustle combines with serenity and joie de vivre. The Centro Storico Monumentale is located around the harbour and the Piazza Del Plebiscito embodies both grandeur and vastness, in contrast to the narrow confines of the old town. Close to the harbour is the mighty Castel Nuovo, its graceful entrance arch seemingly hemmed-in by two awkward-looking towers. Its construction began during the reign of Charles The First but Alfons Of Aragon subsequently had the castle completely rebuilt. From the centre of the town a small causeway leads to the tiny island of Borgo Santa Lucia. The island is dominated by a building which in ancient times was the residence of Lucullus, namely the Castel Dell´Ovo, the oldest fortress in Naples. The Via Partenope, with its magnificent buildings and luxury hotels on the coast near Santa Lucia, developed by land reclamation in the nineteenth century. A walk along the Caracciolo coastal road towards Mergellina passes the Parco Communale with palm trees, sculptures and fountains. Measuring four square kilometres, Procida is the smallest island off Naples, densely populated and with a long history and the picturesque Marina Grande at the Cattolocio Ferry Port typifies relaxed island life. Ischia, the island of Titan Tiphoios, is the largest of the three islands in the Gulf Of Naples, each one now being a very popular tourist destination. "A piece of heaven that fell to Earth”, that is how the Neapolitans rightly refer to their beautiful city and its surroundings.

As Italy reins in spending on healthcare, a world-class coma recovery centre in Crotone is threatened by the cuts.
Over the last two decades Sant Anna Institute has helped more than one thousand people emerge from comas.
Eight years ago Maria’s son Vincenzo survived a horrific motorbike accident. He fell into a coma.
“Day by day they are shown affection. Every hug and caress means a lot,” explains Maria. “I’ve been at my son’s side for seven and a half years and he has shown good signs of recovery. He doesn’t talk, but when he sees me, his eyes follow me, he hugs me, he eats, he strokes my hair. These signs from him delight me.”
Meanwhile Giovannina has been drifting in and out of consciousness since a bus crashed into the car she was driving.
After one year at the clinic she moved back home where doctors can check in on her over Skype as part of the remote care project.
Her condition is called “unresponsive wakeful syndrome.”
Her family like when she seems to smile and laugh.
Even though the clinic’s recovery rates are higher than average, they face the same cuts as any other hospital in the region.
Currently looking after 148 patients, the staff at the coma centre are proud of their achievements.
They follow their patients’ baby steps, monitoring and encouraging them daily, hoping that their work will be recognised and they will receive the funding they need to move their work forward rather than taking a step back.

Starr Forum: Health Care Policy and the Next U.S. Administration
Speaker: Jonathan Gruber
Join noted health care economist Jonathan Gruber as he diagnoses our ailing health care, explains why other countries' systems are in better shape, and offers a recovery plan-in light of the acute financial crisis-to our next president.
"The best health care system in the world," says President George W. Bush. Yet, the World Health Organization ranks U.S. a dismal 37, with France and Italy among the top two. And the U.S. comes in dead last on most measures of performance when compared to other advanced nations, cites a 2007 study by the Commonwealth Fund.
The U.S. health care system is a critical issue in the current presidential campaign, with Barack Obama and John McCain each offering a remedy. But many Americans haven't a clue to what's crippling our system, much less the cure. Join noted health care economist Jonathan Gruber as he diagnoses our ailing health care, explains why other countries' systems are in better shape, and offers a recovery plan—in light of the acute financial crisis—to our next president.
Speaker:
Jonathan Gruber, a professor of economics at MIT, served as the deputy assistant secretary for economic policy at the Treasury Department from 1997-98, was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2005 and, in 2006, received the American Society of Health Economists Inaugural Medal for best health economist in the nation aged 40 and under. He was appointed in 2006 to the board of the Massachusetts Insurance Connector, the state's ambitious health care reform effort, and was named the 19th most powerful person in health care in the United States by Modern Healthcare Magazine. In 2008, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

GHTC 2014 - Safety and Security for Healthcare Workers in West Africa

As of 05 October the Ebola crisis has infected more than 8,000 people and killed more than 4,000 in Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone. The medical support staff in those countries have also suffered enormous losses, with more than 700 healthcare workers infected and more than 300 dead of the disease.
The White House and USAID have scheduled an all-day meeting and second-day workshop on 10-11 October on the topic "How can we improve the safety and security of healthcare workers in the Ebola Crisis".
IEEE GHTC speaker Dr. Eric Rasmussen was selected by the White House for that set of Friday and Saturday meetings, and will be flying directly from DC to this GHTC meeting the day after, bringing an understanding of Ebola crisis needs and opportunities into this Monday workshop. Dr. Rasmussen will establish a brief foundation and context, then describe the specific problems under evaluation, discuss briefly some of the options suggested in DC, and then start a deeper conversation around what else might
be done, and why, and how.
Dr. Eric Rasmussen is a medical doctor and the CEO for Infinitum Humanitarian Systems (IHS), a private sector social business built on a profit-for-purpose model. By training he is an internal medicine physician with both undergraduate and medical degrees from Stanford University and a Masters degree in disaster medicine from the UN World Health Organization’s affiliate CEMEC (Centre European pour la Medecin des Catastrophes) in Italy. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 1997.
Rasmussen is a Research Professor in Environmental Security and Global Medicine at San Diego State University and an instructor in disaster medicine at both the International Disaster Academy in Bonn, Germany (BBK,or Bundesamt für Bevölkerungsschutz ind Katastrophenhilfe) and the Institute for
Disaster Preparedness in Beijing, China.
He is a member of the core faculty at Singularity University within the NASA Ames Research Center, teaching in both the Exponential Medicine and Global Grand Challenges tracks. He also serves as Permanent Advisor to the UN Secretary-General’s High Level Expert Panel on Water Disasters, and is a member of the US National Academy of Science’s Committee on Grand Challenges in Global Development.

Tens of thousands of migrants and asylum seekers escaping from war and conflicts have been arriving over the last years to European shores. Although Italy is a major gateway for those who cross the Mediterranean, arriving from Syria, Libya and the Horn of Africa, often in overcrowded boats and at the risk of their lives, this is a European Union issue rather than solely an Italian one. The Italian borders are the borders of Europe in this context, and according to agreements signed by all European Union countries, people have the right to arrive safely and be received in an atmosphere where they feel safe. The appalling reality is that unacceptable numbers of people are dying in the most distressing way as they seek a better life for their families.
This situation calls for urgent action: All European Governments need to grant in line with the relevant international law and national legislation to migrants appropriate international protection and to ensure their access to urgent humanitarian services, such as health care, shelter or assistance to make contact with their families. Europe needs to strengthen its joint responsibility to ensure adequate safeguards to protect migrants. Is there a sign it will do so? Is the European responsibility at stake when it comes to the protection of most vulnerable people?

Lama Michel Rinpoche is a Buddhist master following the NgalSo Ganden Nyengyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, under the spiritual guidance of Lama Gangchen Tulku Rinpoche.
Born in São Paulo, Brazil in 1981, Lama Michel was recognized as a Tulku (the reincarnation of a buddhist master) at the age of 8 and ordained as a monk at 12. He received a formal education of Buddhist practice and philosophy for 12 years at the Monastic University of Sera Me in the south of India. He continues his studies with annual visits to the Monastery of Tashi Lhumpo in Shigatse, Tibet-China.
Since 2004 he has been residing in Italy, dedicating his life to serving his Guru, Lama Gangchen Rinpoche, and generously sharing his experience and wisdom in many formal and informal situations, such as conferences, teachings, retreats, school visits and freely on social media. His clarity, wisdom, compassion and pragmatic mind is a living expression of his profound knowledge and understanding of Buddhist tradition integrated into today's world.
Under the guidance of Lama Gangchen Rinpoche, he oversees several Buddhist centers such as the Kunpen Lama Gangchen in Milan, Italy; Albagnano Healing Meditation Centre in Albagnano on Lake Maggiore, Italy and the Centro de Dharma da Paz in São Paulo, Brazil.

Lama Michel Rinpoche has participated in all Conferences of Integrated Psychiatry (CIP) ever since the first one was organized in 2006 by CIP Lentis. During the last congress in 2012 he gave a comprehensive talk about Compassion, which was very well received. Many expressed the wish to learn more about Buddhist philosophy. Therefore, in the spring of 2013 the CIP organized an evening talk by Lama Michel about the need for compassion in health care. Also this talk was well received by the audience and many expressed the wish to learn more.
Lama Michel Rinpoche regrets that he could not attend the 2015 conference due to other engagements. However, because of his interest in psychiatry and Western science and because many healthcare professionals expressed their enthusiasm for his teachings, Lama Michel accepted our request to once again give a lecture for health care professionals on Buddhist philosophy.
Here Lama Michel speaks about 'the nature of reality." This relates to how we make sense of life, consciousness, and the universe. Although there are some striking similarities between the Buddhist views on the nature of reality and Western science, specifically quantum physics, there are also differences. Lama Michel will explain according to the view of the Gelugpa school of Tibetan Buddhism.
