Six-time Group One winner St Nicholas Abbey lost his fight for life in January 2014, but only after a major effort was made to save him. The RTÉ Racing team spoke to his vets about that process in a feature broadcast at the end of 2013. Eighteen-year-old Joseph O'Brien rode St Nicholas Abbey to a driving win in the $2,727,000 Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs for his father, trainer Aidan O'Brien. Joseph O'Brien, at 18 years, 5 month, becomes the youngest jockey to win a Breeders' Cup race. Fernando Jara won the 2006 Classic with Invasor at the age of 18 years, 10 months. "This is very special. Unbelievable," said his understated father. "It was a wonderful race. He is an amazing rider. It's been a great day. It's been a great day. Thank you very much." http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/66052/obriens-team-up-to-win-breeders-cup-turf
I know I'm late, he left us on the 14th of January but I had some problems and I couldn't upload it before. He was an awesome racehorse, and one of those horses that makes you fall in love with the sport, with him and with his connections. I'm a big supporter of Coolmore and the O'Briens because of this horse, Nick gave to me real good moments in racing, and was a horse that always tried to don't let us down, he was our champ. I miss you Nick, I miss you so bad. If only somebody could go up there and bring you down...I'd be the happiest girl in the world. Life's not fair, and showed us how unfair and hard it is when you left. We all love you, and we all keep remembering you and all your big times at the racecourses. Thanks for everything, big boy ♥
Coolmore and partners' St Nicholas Abbey spoiled the international debut of sensational filly Gentildonna as he drew off in the stretch from the reigning Japanese Horse of the Year, winning the $5 million Dubai Sheema Classic Presented by Longines (UAE-I) on the Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) March 30 at Meydan. Making a change in racing strategy after a late-charging second to Cirrus Des Aigles in last year's race, St Nicholas Abbey tracked just behind pacesetter Shareta this year before taking control entering the stretch. Gentildonna, who stalked from third, tried to overtake St Nicholas Abbey in the stretch but had to settle for second. Very Nice Name finished third. http://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/77199/st-nicholas-abbey-wins-dubai-sheema-classic#ixzz2P3D064iu

St. Nicholas Abbey is one of my all time favorite horses. He always tried his hardest and on his best days no one could beat him. I wa heartbroken when I heard he was put down due to colic after his long fight. R.I.P
The spirit we know as rum today has evolved over the centuries alongside the sugar industry of the Caribbean. The making of Authentic Rum remains one of its major industries and is responsible for sustaining many jobs. This can be seen as we take a walk with Heather through the beautiful Saint Nicholas Abbey Distillery -- a place of significant historical importance which has recently undergone a renovation that " has brought life back into the plantation." The majestic Jacobian buildings stand out against the backdrop of vibrant green sugarcane fields as Heather tells us, "we do everything here, we bottle rum, sugar and molasses!" Built in 1658 St. Nicholas Abbey is one of Barbados' oldest surviving plantations. Over 400 acres of rolling sugar cane fields in the parish of St. Peter, it features a Jacobean style of architecture which was unusual for a Caribbean home. Today it's preserved and rum is still bottled from cane squeezed/ground at the site.
